This morning I was approached by one of our Senior Directors in our Marketing Finance group. They are taking on a lot more responsibilities now as their team is now global and they have opened up a new position. The position would be a lateral move (Sr. Analyst). I highly doubt there will be a pay raise associated with it as again its lateral.

I don''t know what to do/think. I love my position now (Sr. Auditor). I''ve been doing this for 3.5 years and its never been boring to me. I work with a team that I highly respect and because I''m in Audit, I have face time with so many different departments throughout the company. The work that I''ve done here has been recognized by a lot of executive team members which again is good face time. Plus, my job is extremely secure.

However, there is no current growth opportunities for me in my department. And in order to move into a manager position in the future, I will have to wait until one of our managers leaves (not for another 2 years or so). My end goal will always be audit but sometimes I wonder if I would be more marketable if I leave the department and come back in versus trying to work my way up from inside.

The pros to the new position is that I''ll be working on implementing a brand new program and working closely with our Marketing Strategy teams and with IT, so there would be opportunities with those groups in the future. I''ll also be working with a Sr. Director that has been with the company for 25 years and is highly respected. I know the team (I''ve audited them before

) and the Manager and I get along really well. She often calls me to ask questions about new policies they''re considering and what not. And I won''t have to travel anymore which is a plus since I''m having a baby now. Also, once I''m out I think I''ll be more confident in being able to bounce around Finance which will hopefully get me closer to a Manager position (and more money

).

I honestly don''t know what to do. Stay in a position I love but that may be restricting my learning/growth opportunities? Or take a leap of faith in a new position that could potentially bring on some new opportunities (or that I could totally fail at too...)?

I''m all for leaps of faith.

Me too, especially when they come with perks. Since there is a baby on the way, traveling may not be the best thing anymore (especially after the baby comes), and the possibility for growth would be worth the move for the future of you and the baby. The more departments you know and can function in, the more likely you will be able to get a manager position someday!

I say go for it, if for no other reason than no more travel. With the baby, that''ll get really difficult.

If the only reason you''re staying is for "comfort" reasons... don''t.

IMO, always take positions that can help further your career.

I''m for leaps of faith as well. It sounds like the opportunity might provide open doors for you in the future. And it is very true that you are often more marketable to your department (or sometimes your company) if you leave and then come back. I have seen this happen so many times.

The reduced (or no) travel also sounds like a huge plus, especially since you''ll have a little one.

It''s hard to leave a job that you love to embark on something that you may not love as much or may be a stretch for your skills. Sometimes you just have to go for it and stop thinking.

I know it''s easy to say from the outside, but...

LEAP! Sounds like such an interesting, challenging, and varied opportunity.

Leap + no more travel = definitely a win.

Good luck!

+1

good luck!!

I say go for it nena. You''re young, and need opportunity for growth.

Is this job as secure as the one you have now? If so-go for it!

If not-I would really consider whether you should take the risk right now when you are about to add a very expensive thing to your household-esp. considering it''s a lateral move.

I don''t know if it is. The people in that department have been here for years (all 10+ years) but I don''t know if the position itself is something they consider to be long term or not. I would have to find out from them.

I spoke with my mentor here and she told me to go for it. She''s a Director too and knew that I was going to be approached. She used to be my Director so I knew she would give me an honest opinion on whether or not she sees the position as a good transition for me. Now I just need to get the courage...

Fiery-

I say go for it.

I''m considering it

. I talked to my Director about an hour ago. She''s not happy about it at all. She was supportive and said that she will back me up whatever decision I make but she also wanted me to know that she''d hate for me to leave. At the end of the conversation she made a comment about talking to the head of our Department to mention the future of this team and that they have to do something to give everyone growth opportunities. I think she''s worried that we''re all going to start leaving soon.

actually, I''ve found that people that leave the dept and come back get the job faster than someone who stayed, because they are more marketable, they bring something MORE to the position, and show a willingness to go outside the box...

Go for it.

I''d go for it. It sounds like a good opportunity to get some more experience.

Yup, broadening your experience and skills is always good for upward mobility.

I would proabably take it for the travel reason alone. I travel a lot, and I cannot even imagine having a kid and needing to travel for work while the kid is little. And I think you''re probably right that you''ll move up faster if you leave the group and come back to it later. Sounds like a win-win to me!

Hi Fiery

I''d have to ditto this... I''ve seen it over and over again. You would become more marketable and you can soak up as much as your heart desires while in your new role. Hey, you never know: this might just be opening up a whole new set of doors for you: something you may never have even considered, but could be the opportunity of a lifetime!

Best of luck to you!

I think you should take it. I also agree with what the others said about leaving and coming back. I would ask them that if you do not feel like you are fit for the job after a propabationary period that you would be able to move back into your old position. That way you have a way to get back at what you love to do.
