Ever since my upgrade I haven’t been 100% happy with my ER. I tried to match my original ER because I thought that nobody would notice the change (stupid considering I was going up 1.6 carats), and while I think it’s pretty, I want my forever ring to be a little more unique.

Well, DH gave me the thumbs up to reset my ER as long as I can get the $$ to fund it through selling off some of my other stuff. This will include selling my current ER setting AND my old one and my .9 carat old ER stone. Exciting, right? But now here’s the conundrum: I’ve never been able to sell anything that has sentimental value because . . . well . . . it has sentimental value. And while I’ll probably never wear my old setting again and I can’t imagine ever putting a colored stone, it would be nice to have it for sentimental value. I had also been playing around with resetting the .9 into something else just to have it, but (if you look back at my many started topics you’ll see proof of this) I just can’t get my heart wrapped around anything. *sigh*

So, darling PS’ers, should I just be happy with what I have and suck it up? I’d say I’m 75% happy with what I have right now. Is that enough? Or should I stop being such a wishy washy and get something that will make me 100% happy? Someone kick me in the butt here.

Honestly, I'd say hold onto the original stone/setting if you're sentimental, at least until you're really, really, really sure you know you won't miss them. I'm a sentimental hoarder, too, and I've only just found myself emotionally ready to sell off stuff (it helped that I sat down and totalled up what I think it could sell for and came up with a 3K figure). In the meantime, you could:

a) keep an eye out for a really good deal - they do come along periodically, and wouldn't it be nice to get exactly what you want at a fraction of the price?

or

b) start saving, slowly: if you find yourself ready to sell the originals in a year or two, great! You'll have that much more of a budget for bling. If not? Well, maybe in a year or five, you'll have enough to get what you want, and no regrets ....

What setting would you be 100% happy with?

If I wasn't comfortable with selling other pieces, I'd just start a setting fund. It may take awhile to get the money together but a new setting won't put you over the moon if it means parting with others that leaves you heartsick.

Your ring is beautiful as is but you're the one that has to be happy with it!

Ask yourself these questions:

What is it you wish to gain by re-setting?

What is it you think you'd lose by selling your old setting(s)?

Be honest. Think about not only how you perceive your setting, but also how you think others do.

I have thought about these questions myself when feeling a bit unhappy with my current setting which was chosen with no input from me by my (quite wonderful) SO. The questions helped me gain perspective and to make a decision.

How long have you been thinking about this all? Maybe wait a while longer until you're sure?

I've wanted a new setting for my ER for just about as long as I've had it (just past the time I had to return it). But as for what I want in a setting, I've waffled. I have a trip planned to visit Single Stone on Friday to look at stuff. If I don't fall head over heels with that visit, I may just give it a rest for a while.

I'm not sentimental about stones and jewelry but you are. I would just sit tight, enjoy looking at settings and bide your time. And I have to agree, your current set is gorgeous!

I can't remember what your current set looks like, I'm going to go hunt for it. But I did want to say: I am a HUGE sucker for sentimental pieces, but if I were you, I think I would let go of the old set. It sounds like it will never be used, which is why I think you should give it away and make a ring that you will love with even more intensity.
