(I posted this in RT too, but I thought I might get more traffic here)

I am still reeling. I lost my beloved engagement ring in a cab last night...and I am getting married in 5 weeks.

PSA: If you lose weight, please please please get your ring re-sized to accommodate your smaller finger. I am so tragically sad about this loss.

I am going to need PS help to find another diamond that is comparable. I am concerned that the insurance money (yes, the one thing I did right was have my ring insured) will be less than what my dear FI paid for the ring.

Has anyone here had experience with losing a ring and getting insurance money to cover the loss? Is it best to go to a place like the diamond district, or to a more reputable place like Solomon Brothers to get an appraisal of the lost ring for insurance purposes?

Any help or support would be so greatly appreciated...

I worked in the ins. industry for many years. Still in it, but in a diff field now.

If your husband insured it for its value on a rider policy - and he has the receipt... it is worth what he paid. IE if he spent $10k on it and it is only worth $8K on an appraisal, an insurance policy should give you the full $10k with a copy of the receipt. This is for cases where you are paying for a name, and it cannot be measured... but you DID pay that for the ring.

HOWEVER, if you paid 2=$5K for the ring, and have one of those "appraisals" for $10K you will get at least $5k, but may not get any more if it REALLY wasn''t worth $5k. However each insurance policy is different... so I''d read the fine print and see what it was that you purchased. Hope this makes you feel better!

hugs!

I'm so sorry to hear that this happened Alli.

Isn't the appraisal done when you insure the ring? Isn't that what they base your payments on?

Oh no, this is the third story of a lost ring on PS, all in the last two days, how awful!! Did you contact the cab company? I would try to track down the actual cab and search it if possible. Are you sure you lost it in the cab? You should check all the places you went to that evening. I think it is worth a try. I am so, so sorry this has happened to you. I would also check the police station in the area, you never know.

I don''t have any advice on the insurance, don''t know much about it, but plenty of other PS''ers do. But isn''t the ring initially appraised when you get the insurance? Anyway, just wanted to offer some sympathy and a big ((hug)).

Oh alli. I''m so sorry!

The first thing I''d do is contact your insurance company to see what your options are.

Oh no......Alli I am so sorry, definitely contact your insurance co as tlh and the others suggest firstly. And don''t worry, we are here to help you every step of the way to find a replacement if your original ring doesn''t turn up, but lets cross that bridge if we come to it, it might turn up.

Alli I''m so sorry! Did you notify the cab company? Maybe someone will find it.

Oh no Alli!

I''m so sorry to hear that. Hopefully an honest person found it and it''s waiting for you at th cab company or the police station.

I''m so sorry it''s lost! Major hugs! But I am glad you had it insured.

Ali, I am so very sorry. Thank goodness it was insured. We will be more than happy to find another stone for you. HUGS!!!

I''m so sorry, alli. Hope the insurance company comes through with a fair amount.

Alli, I''m so sorry! I really hope the insurance comes through for you and you''re able to get what your FI spent on it. It won''t help replace the sentimental loss, though, and I''m sorry for that. *hug*

I am so sorry!! Thank goodness it was insured! Hope it comes back to you even so!

Sorry about your ring

Alli, I''m so sorry you lost your ring!

I am soooo sorry. HUGS.

On another note, do you like in NYC? If you call 311, now that cabs have GPS they can help pinpoint the cab. Say, you got out at 63rd and 3rd at 12:04pm, they will be able to pinpoint that cab because it tells them when the meter stopped and where at what time. Maybe that would help? It might be stuck in the crack of the cab seat and they could help you look for it.

I'm so sorry to hear about this and hope the insurance claim goes smoothly.

Oh what terrible news. I also think it is worth a call to the cab company.

Good luck with the insurance.

I''m so sorry!

But don''t give up hope. My sis left her valuable violin in a cab and was able to track it down. I know your ring is much smaller, but it is possible to find it.
