I lost my cat Thursday to HCM

My family is devastated. We lost our Maine Coone Hobie Thursday unexpectedly,he had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, had a blood clot and lost use of his legs. We had to put him down. He wasnt even 3 yrs old yet. He was such a big part of our family every day. I am at a loss as is my poor daughter, we had gotten him to help her with her depression.

If you decide to eventually get another Maine Coon, insist on a DNA test to see if the cat carries both genes for HCM. If the cat carries the mutation on one of the 2 genes, it likely won't develop HCM. If it carries the mutation on both genes, it will eventually develop HCM. It is estimated that 30% of Maine Coons carry the mutation. Imo, it's prudent to avoid any breeder that neglects to test breeding pairs for the mutation.

I'm so sorry. We, too, had to recently put down one of our fur babies (badly infected kidney, couldn't be touched or try to move without suffering extreme pain). But, try to take some comfort in knowing both of them were able to walk over the Rainbow Bridge.
