I think Kenny simply likes to argue.
Nothing is wrong with that. We all entertain him by replying to his thread.

Ok, Kenny, I'm not reading this whole thread, so forgive me if you've changed your mind about FB between the first page and the last, but I want to give my thoughts about FB.

It seems like EVERY posting board these days has a DOUBLE. Everyone posts at X forum AND at FB.

To me, that adds a whole bunch of cliques and gossip, and I never wanted to join FB to be in any PS group (or any other).

One of my best friends texted me and asked me if I was on FB. I said nope. A week later he texted me and asked me if I was on FB.

The second time I just ignored his text (and I'm talking about someone I've known since I was 3).

I know a lot of people like FB and that's fine, of course. I have no patience for it myself.

I have some issues with facebook - it's definitely not perfect. But it is my lifeline right now. I couldn't stay in touch with so many people without it. Being so far away from home makes it difficult to have phone calls or snail mail, and the sheer number of people I am displaced from makes email impractical, not to mention, lacking. I have family, friends (both online and irl) all in one place. I get back in touch with friends I haven't talked to in years and it warms me to know that I can check in on anyone at anytime. I'm not interested in cliques or behind the scenes stuff, but there are people I've met online that I want to keep as friends IRL as well and facebook provides that opportunity. I'm in control of what I do and say, and I'm in control of what I share and who I share it with. I am grateful for the ability to have everyone in one place.

Kenny, I agree that we all probably have equivalent egos, deep down inside the world revolves around each of us. BUT.... how much time we choose to spend preening it and examining it and comparing it and justifying it and gluing sequins to it - that's different to different people. You navel gaze your ego more than most which makes it appear larger but it is just your own magnifying glass...

About FB.

Facebook is exactly as creepy, clique-ish, and/or invasive as you let it be. Like most areas of life, you take your own issues to it - or not. It doesn't create them.

Bingo. Well said.

Um, we appear to have broken FB anyway. It doesn't work this morning.

Really? Mine's fine. Although it does go on the blink every now and then. Especially the chat. Try it later.

Working again for me too. It's a little funky sometimes.

Facebook. Serious business.

Yeah FB does not sound serious or important at all . . .
Slow news day folks, no biggie.
Move along.
Nothing to see here.

http://www.facebook.com/press/info.php?statistics

SNIP from FB itself:

People on Facebook
More than 500 million active users
50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day
Average user has 130 friends
People spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook
Activity on Facebook
There are over 900 million objects that people interact with (pages, groups, events and community pages)
Average user is connected to 80 community pages, groups and events
Average user creates 90 pieces of content each month
More than 30 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photo albums, etc.) shared each month.
Global Reach
More than 70 translations available on the site
About 70% of Facebook users are outside the United States
Over 300,000 users helped translate the site through the translations application

Platform
More than 2.5 million developers and partners from more than 190 countries build with Facebook Platform
People on Facebook install 20 million applications every day
Every month, more than 250 million people engage with Facebook on external websites
Since social plugins launched in April 2010, an average of 10,000 new websites integrate with Facebook every day
More than two million websites have integrated with Facebook, including over 80 of comScore's U.S. Top 100 websites and over half of comScore's Global Top 100 websites

Mobile
There are more than 200 million active users currently accessing Facebook through their mobile devices.
People that use Facebook on their mobile devices are twice as active on Facebook than non-mobile users.
There are more than 200 mobile operators in 60 countries working to deploy and promote Facebook mobile products
Exactly why almost every business has a FB page. DUH, it would be kind of stupid not to set up a FREE facebook page and advertise to 500 million people. Not sure why it is shocking to see people advertise on there?

wow, long thread, didn't read all the replies. Good for you, you do what you gotta do. I did have a FB account long ago, but left after three months I closed my account due to career reason and one less thing to keep track of as well as one less account to get hacked into- so no I am not connected to anything online but here, also when I was searching for a friend, I found a FB page that was created by teens, aimed at bullying another kid, No they didn't know how to use the privacy function apparently  I was appalled and reported to FB to remove such a page as I don't want to see another kid do anything drastic due to online bullying, they immediately took action and contacted me about the removal (I actually wanted to contact their school to report this issue, but couldn't as they removed the page quickly and didn't think about it until after the fact) , although they could easily create another one- but maybe they would think twice before doing so, as someone else maybe watching :nono: .

Well, maybe it's my age showing, but I find all the FB "contests" and other FB marketing done by some of the PS vendors here kind of silly. So, if that's what you're referring to, Kenny, I'm on your side. But I just de-friend the offenders and move on.

I'm not poopooing FB entirely, and I certainly respect diversity in that I'm at peace if 99.99999% of the world is on it and I'm not.
Being similar to others doesn't seem as important to me as it is to many others.

But let's say hypothetically there was a private group formed for people who like to play tennis.
Let's say all 100 members agree they are comfortable reading curse or swear words since that's just how some members talk.

Let's say a member mentions they don't like it and doesn't want to be in a place where people swear.
Other members quickly speak up and say they are okay with it, and even like it and few support the dissenting side.
I think it is up to the dissenting member to shut up about it or leave.
That's what I did, but in my case it was advertising, not swearing, I found objectionable.

This concern is not about FB itself.
It's about choosing what environment a person wants to spend their time in.

Kenny, I am finally going to wade in the pool.

Swearing for most is a definitive item. Most people would not call crap a swear word. I think most anyone can agree on a "swear" word.

My issue with you specifically in this instance is that you left FB because you got irritated with what you assigned to be "advertising". Let's even say hypothetically that I agree with you that it was (which I don't but for the sake of argument...).

My issue is that you advertised yourself. You left a group because someone else advertised. And you did the same thing.

To use your example above, that's like other people swearing and you asking them to "effing" stop.

In the words of Frank Langella from one of my favorite movies, Eddie:

"Don't let the door hit you where the good Lord split you."

Coming late to the discussion but I wanted to post an answer to this.

Many of my clients friend me on my personal page and also become fans on my fan page. Most of my clients also become my friends, so it is not uncommon that people would friend their vendors as well as their "normal" friends.

Just my thoughts.

As I already a told Kal, I see civilians and pros differently.
It is a certainty that you and I are not making a living selling jewelry because you and I sell stuff for less than we paid.
Pros sell stuff for more than they paid - a totally different dynamic to me which can bring motivations into question.
If you want to ignore this and you choose to see ALL selling as the same that is certainly your right.

I never minded and never complained about civilians selling used stuff to each other.
I see that as a community thing, like garage sale.

Your and my primary purpose for being there is to socialize, and be friends.
Sure, vendors can be there to socialize too, but the minute they start mentioning their goods . . . that crosses a line IMHO.
I brought it up.
People disagreed.
I left.
Problem solved.

Besides, even if I am inconsistent, I'm fine with that in me and in others.
It is wonderful to be inconsistent.
We all are inconsistent, though most of us are blind to our on inconsistency or too pious to admit it.
Inconsistency is just another of the many natural things about us that society tries to stamp out and make us feel ashamed of.

I sure am repeating myself a lot in the thread.

Also the way FB is designed a group can consist of people who have not friended each other.
I'm afraid that makes FT's question not applicable in this situation.

I'm sorry that you don't like the way the vendors advertise on FB, but diamond vendors aren't the only ones who do it.

<Snip>

I was at a meeting yesterday where it was discussed that Ford spends $1,000,000 per month advertising on FB. Why would they do that?

There is only one possible answer.

It works.

No argument here.
Advertising works - and I hate it, especially how it is seeping into every nook and cranny of our lives.
I realize that I may end up living in a cave.
Oh well.

I have the answer here folks. It's really quite simple.

Yes, my comment was so very mean and lynch like.

Ha! Finally, something has made me laugh today.

For #$^$*%^* Sakes! Would the 2 of you just shut it ?!?!?!?!
HOW OLD ARE YOU GUYS?!

2 Huuuuuuuuuuuge egos fighting for the spotlight - Sorry there aren't spotlights HUGE enough to fit you both underneath.

Is that really called for Amethyste?
I simply tried to inject a little humor into a dry day.
So sorry if it bothered you.

After being attacked...maybe 1000 times by someone who claimed to have complete tolerance for anything but intolerance, I think I might be allowed a little leeway.

But of course, to each his own.

Seems that when one of you see a good time to nag the other, you both just jump at it! It's getting old.
And I am getting tired reading it, seeing it - it just feels like an old couple fighting and nothing ever gets anywhere, and probably never will.

Maybe I should say I am sorry about what I said - and then keep on acting up later and say I am sorry again, like a broken record.
Some people have huge egos, I am blunt. What can I say. :)

Hmmmmm...Maybe I should go edit my post huh?

Nah....

Unless I've missed something I've never attacked Kenny.
I did just complain that he claimed to have no tolerance for intolerance- and given his behavior and postings, that has bothered me. But I don't see this as an attack
From where I sit his constant badgering and attacks on my company and the way I view diamonds are attacks.

But again, to each their own.

Well for fun....

http://redwing.hutman.net/~mreed/warriorshtm/ego.htm

There are lots of other on there too...and of course, we all probably fall into one of the categories, if not multiple ones. I think the link has been posted here before, but it's amusing so I'm puttin' it out there again...

Totally and entirely uncalled for. And, dare I say, rude.

If you don't like what they have to say, that's on you....I suggest blocking them to solve your end of the issue. But there is no need to be so mean about things....
