Clearly it's not the place for me since vendors are free to post about their goods.

About a month ago I was getting "chat" from vendors.
I turned off my chat, and "defriended" those vendors.
But when vendors unashamedly post that they want to keep it a place where they can reach customers and large numbers of members support that I made my choice.

My pet peeve is advertising - subtle or blatant, and I'm very militant about it.
I will not even watch TV because of it.
I tried FB and am done.
I have no opinion about anyone who makes different choices.
I'm not trying to convert anyone to my way of thinking.
I only started this thread so my friends understand.
I left (not because of reaction to my rude posting style) but because I can read the writing on the wall.
Soft ads will become part of the culture there.
No thanks.

Ads are everywhere today.
For us men they are even in our faces when peeing in a public urinal.

Nothing personal against anyone.
I like everyone there.
I have removed every shred of content prior to permanently deactivating the acct.

You can block people. When you do that not only do you not see those peoples' posts, they cannot see yours! If they do a search for you, nothing comes up. I've done this with a couple people who I don't want seeing what I was/am writing. There was one who kept contacting me and I need to block him.

I realize that you've already made up your mind, but am posting so others know about this.

Leaving FB seems a touch dramatic. I say just ignore the people who post adverts and just try to enjoy it for what it is.

i'm curious. why do you "friend" vendors? my list only consists of people i'm actually friends with.

FB rubs me the wrong way in many ways.
My experiment is over.

Large on my list of complaints: I can't stand how FB borrowed the term "friend".
The implication is too close to real life.
It makes it feel like real life and real friends.
It's creepy, kind of like life masturbation.

I've read that if you do not delete all of your content prior to deactivating the acct your personal information lives on for others (and perhaps hackers for the "private" stuff) to see.
No thanks.

So I am "unfriending" all 42 of my "friends".
That sounds so terrible!
How COULD I?
I'm such an anti-social monster!
But, hey, wait a minute, I didn't hijack the word "friend" and I refuse to buy into any meaning FB tries to tie to their inappropriate use of the term.

I see this as psychological manipulation of us to keep FB growing so they can make billions and billions of bucks.

What I'm "unfriending" is FB itself, not any of the 42 wonderful people on my list.

I just friended everyone who asked.
I guess I'm just overly polite.

Also friend is an abused term on FB IMHO.

I would think a facebook page for a vendor is exactly that - a way to advertise. You can just make yourself completely invisible to anyone you don't want to deal with. They can't even find you in a search using your email, you won't show up on any facebook searches whatsoever if you choose...

If you enjoy communicating with friends on there, you don't need to cancel your account to stay away from certain people. There is less privacy here - you can ignore people, but they can still see you...

Same...well, actually I have two FB accounts. One is for friends I know in RL and another for online friends. I like to keep them seperate b/c I have my family info on my RL account.

I don't mind vendors being there but posting about their goods (and the growing tolerance and even support for it) is why I left.

Yesterday one vendor even started a thread about how he loves gems, it's his life, he can't help spreading the love, blah blah blah.
Then consumers post all this support for him and this or that gem.

Barf.

And yet you post here, where there is BLATANT advertising. Okie dokie.

With that reasoning, you should be able to watch tv, because no advertising happens in the show.

I don't understand what a FB account has to do with PS? Isn't it proper ettiquette to just quietly bow out, not create drama here on PS with a topic that is unrelated to anything here?

MP, live however you want.
You owe me no explanation for the choices you make.
You are free.
Your choices don't have to make sense to me.
You don't even have to conform to my perception of consistency.
Consistency is overrated anyway, IMHO.
You are free to do whatever you want today and make different choices tomorrow.
It's lovely and liberating. :wavey:

Oh, and google product placement.
Corporations are reacting to people fast forwarding past commercials and paying to put their products IN THE SHOWS.
Count the products in Lady Gaga's Bad Romance video.

But then there would be nothing to talk about!

Kenny, I think this thread is pretty silly. You can live how you want, too. So there's no need to justify it to US, is there?

Kenny - You keep editing and changing the above quoted post. This is the third revise. Why not just drop it? You don't like FB. Move on!

I am stuck at work where I cannot enjoy the cuddly warmth of a kitty.
I am jealous - make him an FB page so I can live vicariously through you! Like elle :D Looove kitty.

Kenny, I tend to like your posts, I really do. But did you really need a thread on PS about his? It would have been just as affective to say "Hey guys, sorry but this isn't for me, I'm leaving the group. No hard feelings and I'll see you guys on PS."

You've now brought something to PS that PS wants to avoid. **edited**

I'm sorry that you don't like the way the vendors advertise on FB, but diamond vendors aren't the only ones who do it. It's probably best that you left, and that's fine. It's a personal choice. However I think posting an "exit" thread on PS is only going to create un-needed drama.

Yes, 2nd to Vintagelover. This has been brought up before and it's a given that it's not at all related to PS.

Done. And that is so cute! I wish I had made a page for Cleo before she disappeared :(sad

You are done of FB until you get ban here, then you would be back on FB again ;))

I edit a lot, often up to my 45 minute window.
So.

oooh, sorry about Cleo. There are some kitty pages dedicated to pets who've passed away.

If it wasn't the right place for you...it's probably best that you left! I can understand all your reasons for going...makes total sense to me.

And I edited to say "nice snark everyone"

you might want to check into this - no matter whether you delete your content or not, Facebook will always own the rights to any photos you have EVER put on your page. And it is all out there somewhere in cyber world.

You are probably right that absolute safety is not possible in this day and age.
But I'm happy to do what little I can do to move in that direction.

FYI There's a huge difference between leaving a group vs. changing one's name so a person can SPY!

Not accusing anyone of anything of course. I guess I've watched/read too many movies about undercover activities.

OUCH!

I changed my name on that FB account as another level of information removal, not to spy.
I left that group and could not get back in unless allowed back in, which is a very visible event.

Besides after 6 years it should be clear that I don't worry what people think of me.
