I bought a desk!
I'm v. psyched about this, as I've had the same desk for (gulp) over 20 years now: my folks bought it for me when I was a kid, and it's been through 11 moves with me. And, sadly, each and every one of them shows: the poor thing is so battered that it's held together with square brackets on its underside.
I've been looking for a new one for a while, but none of them seemed quite right: the new ones are ugly, and a lot of the old ones are really small. But I spotted an awesome one in a vintage shop for $100 on Monday: it's only about 2/3 the size of my old one, but it's a secretary desk with a lot of storage space, so I'm hoping it will keep me from sprawling and letting my stuff go everywhere the way I have been.
But I digress.
When I got home, I decided to trawl eBay just to make sure I hadn't overpaid, with my whole big $100 ... and I found the exact same desk! http://cgi.ebay.com/Mahogany-Chippe...336?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5adf8a15b8
So, I e-mailed my husband to gloat, saying, look, I got a deal - 1/8 the price! And, besides, the same one is up for $1500 - even more smugness!
Yeah, apparently he missed the part about 1/8 the price and thought I'd casually dropped almost a grand without bothering to discuss it ... and that he should just be relieved that it wasn't almost two. And the only reason we realized there was a misunderstanding was when I casually mentioned last night that it amused me that shipping the desk was costing as much as it had and he said, "Wait, $800 for shipping?"
Obviously, the man does not know me and my deal hunting ways at all. Well, that, or this is an illustration of why I'm the bargain-hunter of the family .... I honestly don't know whether to be offended, or to use this to expand the scope of my operations! We have been needing new nightstands, and, oh, is it easier to shop without him ....
