i don't understand some people...

Of course Im curious (cmon holly spill). i do remember the poster who did throw big parties in Vegas, remodeling condo but then wanted to sell it shortly afterwards, lots of drama. another lady starting I believe with a "D" who had conflicts with her children and a bit with her husband...but there ARE people like that out there and I just see their posts reflecting their personalities and not necessarily being deceiving. I myself am low key so I gravitate towards wanting to read those posts, even if I prefer my own quiet life!

I'm without a doubt, NOT an expert, but I really enjoy learning new things from all of you, but my peeve is new posters that come on 20 posts and a month on the boards and proceed to tell members with over 10,000 posts, and the true experts that contribute to this forum that there information is wrong, outdated or unfounded.

Of course questioning the norm and what is accepted is how progress happens......but it still really grates on my nerves!

<sigh> - I hear ya!!! And probably know who you're talking about... :cheeky:

There are ways and ways to question the norm and progress. Some do it in a nice manner, asking questions, citing sources and explaining their line of reasoning. Others seem to almost relish calling experts idiots or bulldozing their ideas through. Guess which ones are more pleasant and quickly earn respect.

Well I'm not an expert either but I'll comment anyway 8) I don't mind the questioning... granted, I don't particularly enjoy being questioned so if I say something I try to be careful to either back it up or add a "this is my opinion" disclaimer. Given that my posts are usually twice as long as they need to be to get the point across... oh well ::)

What really bugs me is when people - newbies, longtime consumers, tradepeople - make definitive statements without any explanation. I think it's really important to either outline the logic by which you come to some conclusions or explicitly state where you got the info from. I know there is some "common knowledge" that I disagree with.

But yeah, there are definitely a (thankfully pretty rare) few who are just impossibly stubborn, or who take pleasure in trying to "take 'em down a few pegs". Gypsy is IMO the best of the regular RT crew at getting through to them - me, I'm more the abandon ship sort..

I'm sorry I didn't mean to offend or upset anyone. I know this forum has been alive for years and I sincerely apologize for upsetting anyone. I never intended to call people idiots, so if I was taken that way I'm truly sorry. I'm new at forum posting, I forget there are professional posters that have 20000 posts and do this as a part time job it even seems. When I posted something direct or frank it was probably because I didn't realize Internet posting was just as political and sensitive as the corporate world. In my professional life I am exceedingly careful in phrasing things correctly etc to not get people offside. The online world is new to me and I didn't understand how sensitive it was and how many of you have been together for years much like a company or group of friends. I naively thought you could give an opinion quite honestly as it is 'anonymous' to a degree.

I can completely see how I came put like a bull in a china shop and I truly am sorry. I don't want to upset people in virtual life any less than in real life so I am sorry. I think what you regular posters do is a commendation to you that you will spend hours of your lives helping people with no other reason than to help.

How do I pay for the damage of brokn china? send people bottles of virtual wine :)) in all honesty it's a learning curve for me that in the online world opinions do have such political sensitivity. I have never posted on a forum before ever...so it's good to know how people can get so upset if you do have a differing opinion and to phrase that carefully. I hope that I can be forgiven one day for questioning things!

LOL. The contrition lift went a few floors too many here ;))

Seriously. Don't stop questioning. Don't stop thinking that ideas that "go against the grain" aren't worth at least investigating. A RockyTalky full of parrots is the last thing any of us want.

I'll take some malbec if you're offering though... it's gonna be a long day at work.

I have no problem with people questioning the norm, in fact I would encourage it. I imagine many PSers would agree.

I think the thing that can be annoying about new posters who jump in and post all over the place is when they post contrary information or facts without any supporting logic or evidence of any sort. It just doesn't add anything to the conversation, then.

I'm surprised to see anyone feel like a bull in china shop here on Pricescope. PSers are many things, but delicate ain't one of them.

Somewhere in 2010, there was a . . . situation. The end result was that one or two posters became 'former' PSers.

I went back and read a couple of things and remembered that deco and T-Gal shared some of my misgivings about this former poster. I feel better knowing that I didn't just take her *personality* personally; other very savvy PSers found her a bit tiresome as well.

No. And let's not do any guessing games. Other people really liked this poster. I don't wish to annoy anyone.

She just came to mind when you started this thread. I always imagined that she was putting a more wonderful spin on her life than she was actually experiencing; or that she was overstating her experiences in life because she could always come up with a personal anecdote to cover all situations. Sometimes the more people post, the more can be easily read between the lines. And she was prolific in her posting. It just gave me a feeling that we were being fed a little bull, now and then.

Whatever.

Awesome. I have no idea who you're talking about (seriously.) There's only one poster ever that I thought was off the rails, and she turned out to be an ebay scamming thief so I was right about her. Everyone else around here is just different personalities, as far as I am concerned, and most days I have no idea who irritates who...or who irritates me for that matter (I have a terrible memory for stuff like this.)

Yssie/Haven, thanks for your replies and being open to questions. I completely understand the need for validation and glad to see you just don't want parrots!

Traveling Gal, that's pretty funny, and very true too. However, I know I've upset a few people in the last few days questioning things and am a bit bummed about it. I get so excited over anything diamond and engagement related things, which are such happy things, so it's a bummer to get caught up in silly debates over percentages and angles and annoy people. Especially as a newbie :))

Attention-seeking. Wanting to feel 'popular' - surely that sort of photo claim attracts comments and compliments.

Absolutely this......trying to overcome one's insecurities by being perceived as worthy, in the know, etc. Some folks just need the ego-stroking.

The kind of poster that annoys me most is the psychotic who thinks concretely. (One of the things one looks for in a mental status exam is concrete thinking. That is why one may ask a patient to tell you what he thinks of some allegory-for example "people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones"-to see what he tells you.)

I happen to have a dry sense of humor and I have learned to keep it in check most of the time on the 'net. I realize that if I joke, most jokes I make will fly over the heads of most people. In real life I often sit and watch people nod in agreement to the outrageous things I have said ironically. But on the 'net, when I am holding my humor firmly in check, I am still sometimes attacked-seeming out of the blue- for the most random comments about innocuous topics.

And once a crazy poster has his or her teeth into me, it's hard to dislodge them. I have heard...well, only through my daughter, who believes anything she sees on the 'net...that a pitbull bites like that. But I digress.

In another thread someone posted a link to an essay on logical posting. When I read that, I thought of some of the attacks I've experienced over the years. This thread is also making me think of them!

Deb, the people who have taken you to task for an "innocuous" comment . . . don't know you well.

You've received a number of protests over things you've said to me, and I didn't blink an eye!

But, then I'm seen as a "pot stirrer", "die-hard Republican", "religious right" bigot by a few PSers. I'd say there are more than a few posters here who would rather assign labels than get to know other posters. Regardless of my rep here, I'm a voter who crosses party lines AND an Episcopalian. There is nothing remotely religious right about the Episcopal Church.

DF :))

I think fear can drive actions. I can quite confidently say my questions and debates recently on the rocky talky boards was because I was actually genuinely worried that this site was biased, to the point I was even thinking that posters were posing as normal people that were affiliated with certain companies to actively push those sites. I couldn't really understand how people could be 'professional posters' with tens of thousands of posts and not be getting something out of it...

On the other hand after spending some time on here, I think there are plenty of genuine people who are simply diamond enthusiasts and love diamonds and helping other people, and possibly the support they get from just bantering on the site.

The glass house/concrete thought was an interesting point, I think I understand what you are saying and believe there is truth to that. Also conveying humor on the Internet and tongue in cheek comment is very hard, something your friends and family would just laugh off in written words its harder to convey even with all the little smilies to the right of me which I still don't know what they all mean!

In my opinion, it would be a pretty boring forum if we didn't stir the pot and just posted happy faces on every single link. However if people are purely here for comfort and friends then that's a different story. :))

Holly-

I'm not sure what comments that I made to you that you are referring to. (Deb retreats behind some cover as she waits for a reply, peering out surreptiously.)

There were probably some times in the heat of political debate when I said some things to you which might have deserved the condemnation of our fellow Pricescopers. (I know. Shame, shame, everybody knows my name. I lose it when I am defending the poor against the rich, etcetera.)

On the other hand, I rarely get personal when I am in an actual political debate and if I ever do, I usually apologize promptly for having "lost it". So if I ever said anything that seemed disparaging about you, I was probably flirting with you and teasing you...which I have been doing shamelessly for years and years and years here on Pricescope! Which means that Pricescopers just don't understand my humor, my banter, etcetera. I know you do, because neither Leonid and Irina nor Andrey has ever told me that you contacted them and reported me for sexual harrassment. Thanks for that, by the way. There's something about you I seem unable to resist. :lickout:

Deb
:saint:

PS-I did think the Episcopalians were a cult. I think I read somewher that they broke with The Church led in a revolt by Henry VIII and that he was excommunicated after that. If that's the case, you might want to watch out with whom you are associating. The next thing you know you'll be getting mixed up with Lutherans.

Oh, you know, whenever you may have been poking a bit of fun at me by pretending to be up in arms about something, or making a droll comment that was entirely tongue in cheek. I always either got it, or I was gone from the thread and didn't even see it until you came back to apologize for a perceived (by others) slight.

And here you are, apologizing again. No need. You've never said anything I've ever taken offense to.
