What else is new on PS DF? And I'm not just talking about rocks either.

I've been spending more and more time in RT because I love science, a good deal, and helping people. So I've been trying to hone my skills by helping out in there more and reading. I had the SAME EXACT sentiment you do very recently. I feel bad getting frustrated by something that really doesn't affect my life but it is annoying to see people spend time helping someone who asks for help only to have them tell the helpers that, "Sorry, whatever, it's fine I'm just going to do it my way even though I acknowledge that you think its a big mistake."

I've been seeing this lately too. You can only help a person so much. I love the ones where "I'm working with a friend of a
friends brother...I'm sure he's giving me a good deal on a really good stone". Then we get the numbers on the stone and
we're like "what???

I think its just easier to stick with the stone they already have. I sure wish people would come here first before they put money
down on a stone.

its more work doing it the PS way....most people will settle for less rather than do the work. true of most things in life as well.

yup, like why even consider a rb stone with 64% depth?.. :knockout: and then there's one with a 66% table... :knockout:

exactly. Many times I find that my help and guidance has not helped at all.

Was it green? Or Red?

Haha. What's new? If this didn't happen, every single sales person at electronics stores and appliance stores would be out of jobs. I mean, there has to be a pool of people for whom just being told in a firm voice that "you're doing the right thing" is enough research for a purchase right?

I'm not even dissing the sales staff. You can read and learn and teach, but hey, people don't want to hear it. So why bother?

I think we try because on forums, you already cut through 99% of everyone, and you get people that want to put in that extra % of effort. You haven't lost all the people who only want to think that they are the brightest and the best; and hence don't like being told to their face that they are making the wrong choices. But you'll get those people anywhere. Just ignore them and help the ones that want to be helped.

i guess that's the # 1 reason.

I tend to think most of the people who argue it already bought it, can't return it and want to be told they didn't just totally get hosed. But I have had to stop looking at rt as much bec I gives me a permanent eye roll in too many cases.

I think you hit the nail on the head in regards to the poster having already made a purchase and is only coming for confirmation of what a great job they did...

My feeling is that, yes there are always the ones that make you shake your head in frustration. But for everyone person that makes us feel that way, there is a lurker learning from that thread and making the right choice. A lot of times, even when I KNOW that the person posting is not going to listen, I WILL post more because I want the thread to have accurate information for others who might be watching and not posting.

And then there are success stories too. And those make everything worth it.

Haven't you been paying attention?
ALL diamonds are equally beautiful now.
Cut is only an opinion and all opinions are equal now.

Don't such be a hater.

Why are you having hamburger when you can have filet?
No no I've never had filet and hamburger is good enough for me.

Yes. As far as I'm concerned: if it's on Rocky Talky it's fair game. If it's on SMTB, well... that's different.

Totally agree. If they are saying on RT they want honesty then by all means. If they're excitedly posting a out their ring in SMTB- then different story.

Yes. This exactly. And Gypsy, I don't post much, but I always see you giving incredible advice re: stones and am shocked at some of the responses. Doesn't everyone on Pricescope, newb or not, have the same end goal? To end up with a stone that will blow people out of the water? If someone takes the time to find and request help on PS, my seemingly incorrect assumption is that they care enough about their purchase to want something more than a large lifeless rock. But this is also coming from a total ideal cut snob. Hi, my name is Little Sparkle, and I hate poorly cut stones.

And this is the big misconception which is why what happens bothers people.

No - not everyone who comes to PS is looking for the stone that will blow people out of the water.

People come to PS and Rocky Talk for a variety of reasons. The ones who come looking to actually get educated and learn how to buy a good looking diamond are the people who some consider success stories.

However, others come to the PS forums (and various other forums) for other opinions or for other reasons. My take on that is if I can help them - fine. If not; next...

Nor do I figure its worth my time to figure out why other people do what they do except in very rare cases.

But I do treasure the ones where I feel I have helped them.

Have a great day,

Perry

See, this is why I'm too scared to post any of my stuff on the diamond threads. . .

I worry that I spent too much or got something technically icky, and feel like a heel . . . ::) Heck, I don't even like round diamonds, so much of it is lost on me anyway . . .

I'll stick to colored stones, I've taken some time to get those figured out and I feel slightly more confident.

POS- piece of ....

This is what people don't always understand (even some of the people in this thread, apparently):

Yes: every poster is looking the best diamond for their budget.

The problem is ... people don't define 'best' the same way.

Best can mean:

Biggest-- so a K I1 shallow stone with great spread seems like a good buy.

Whitest: D color at the expense of all else.

Loupclean: so they spend their money on a VVS stone.

And sometimes it means: Easiest purchase to make, or fastest.

Our goal on RT is to educate people enough so that they can make knowledgeable compromises instead of ignorant ones. That's all.

Sometimes that means educating them about diamond stats, other times it means encouraging them to ask their partner's what the their desires are. We do also try to a talk people out of extremes.

Our job is to point out things they are missing. Because some of them don't even know there are questions to ask, let alone what the questions are.

We are human though, and so our personal preferences do enter into our posts and our responses. And we do get frustrated when a poster's personal preferences or definitions of "best" don't seem like smart ones to us, of course. But ultimately, the people who last on RT as helpers realize that their job is to educate the poster on whatever they are overlooking and then hope that leads to a decision the poster (and their partner) will be happy with long term. Whatever form that "happiness" takes.

This is not the thing that makes me the most crazy. What bothers me the most are newer members giving bad advice to a poster!!! Then we have to step in and say....uh, no, that really is NOT a good stone!!! I think that is confusing to the newbies.

The depth thing bugs me, too. I don't know how many times I have said...you may as well drop your weight below a carat if you are getting a stone that faces up like a .90!!!!! Duh!!!!

Another often repeated one when they post a GIA VG (with like a 31 crown angle!): Start over with GIA excellent and then we can help you narrow those down.

Most newbies don't know the people at PS, the knowledge they have, etc. To them, we are a mass of people giving opinions. On the other hand, there is the seller (friend of whoever or whoever's brother), who they do trust and have a working relationship with. Suddenly, there are people they don't know pointing out flaws, talking about a lot of numbers they don't quite understand and questioning their size/quality tradeoff. On the other side, there is a pretty stone (they have probably never seen a better one) and a guy saying "go ahead, it is a good deal". I can understand why many go ahead with what they have seen and are comfortable with.
