LOL! I came here to lament my situation and see that soocool is in the same boat! Oh well, I shall still seek solace

I sent my ring to WF 3 weeks ago for my upgrade and my ring is finally ready and they can ship it tonight
36.gif

We have to drive accross the border to pick it up in the US (complex customs for an upgrade), and we can only go down on Saturdays. Well my husband informed me yesterday that we can''t go get it this weekend because we have to go to his grandparents'' house to help his dad lay flooring in anticipation of selling the family property
39.gif

My ring is ready, I could have had it in only 2 more sleeps, and now I have to wait until NEXT WEEKEND instead!

Oh woe is me. I am going mental. I want my new big rock on my finger

Gah! I''d drive it up to you if I could!!!

I count the sleeps too. I''d find something to occupy your time that won''t drive you batty, and you find addictive, so that you hardly notice time has gone by at all. My friend and I could put together a puzzle for HOURS, and since we were working to get it finished, we''d not notice that it was several hours later.

Then there''s always margaritas.

Can''t you go solo?

Don''t laugh, but I printed several copies of my ring and have one on the fridge, and one on my nightstand. I even made a smaller copy and cut it out and place it over my finger. My husband just shook his head and kissed me and said if I spend anymore time on the computer checking on the status I will wear it out.

Glad to know I have a Friend - In - Waiting for the Ring!

Can''t wait to see yours!

oops

I''d definitely go by yourself if you can. 9 nights is way too long to wait!!

oops

???
LOL! Sorry! I typed a response and PS ate it, and when I went to paste it back (I always copy first) I realized it was my previous post! Then baby cried and I had to go put him down for his nap!

I may think more about going alone. I would have to take my baby with me and for some reason I am hesitant to do that. It''s a 2 hours trip each way, and I have made the drive many times (I used to work part time in the city I am going to), but I worry about him crying too much or needing something when we are going and having to stop on the way. I also worry that there could be an issue taking my son accross the border without my husband, will they think I am stealing him?
6.gif
I have his birth certifacate, which is all I need...

Am I being silly about that?

dreamer- go get your ring! Hunter will be fine... he''s a baby, he can just take a nice long nap
2.gif

You should have no trouble crossing the border without your husband; my parents used to do it multiples times per week. For that matter, we used to take kids who were not related with us too
9.gif

Your last name is the same as the baby's? And you only need a birth certificate? I only ask b/c I have a memory of a women-in-academia-life-balance forum at a conference, and many of the foreign-born married professors said that they carried their marriage certificate now with them when crossing borders to prove their kids were their kids as their last names didn't match. (In response to a question about hassles or wisdom of changing/not changing last names.)

Our names are the same, so that's not an issue! I am a wierdo in academia for changing it and I now publish as Dreamer Maiden Married (cited as Married, D.M.; my maiden name is also a person's first name so I treat it like a middle name). This kids issue is honestly *one* reason I changed my name! I asked at the border and for a very young baby they do not require a passport apparently. But I will double check that!

ETA Cara are you an academic?

You must go get your ring!

oh man...............no idea how you''re waiting. The bull in me would be wracking my brain to figure out how I could get THAT ring on MY finger!!

ETA Cara are you an academic?

Yeah, currently postdocing. Not wedded to the whole professor thing, so may jump to industry if I garner some courage. The whole kid last name thing is probably one of the strongest reasons to name change, for me personally. Maybe my husband should be miffed, but somehow we survived all those dating years with different names so it seems OK to be married with different names. But a brand new little one we get to name, whom I am responsible for at hundreds of school events/border crossings, etc? Almost enough to send me to the paperwork. Good luck on the ring retrieval, when do we get pics!!

Cara Don''t know if you have seen any of my threads, but I just finished a two year post-doc! I enjoyed the research time a lot, it is really one of the only times in your life when, in many ways, your time is completely your own to do with what you will... I mean you have the longer term goals of publications (or whatever the metric for success is in your particular field), but as long as that gets done in the long term it doesn''t matter what you do on a day to day basis. Loved that. Didn''t love the uncertainty as I was interested in academia and as you know, the job market is the pits these days. Anyways, got a tenure track job this year, finally, so I start actually working for a living next January after my maternity leave! haha. I changed my name completely for my kids. I would have been okay with a different name than DH, but I really wanted the same name as my kids. It was a tough decison, but really not as traumatic as I thought it would be

Unfortunately I am looking after a 2 and a half month old so there is little time for puzzles and I don''t *think* I am supposed to be drunk while caring for him and breast feeding

Apparently some people frown on that

I have been there! I can't wait to get mine... I need to read your threads and see what the story is behind your new ring. Mine is just your basic "I'm greedy and want a bigger rock".

You know, the usual. Oh, supposedly it is to celebrate getting a job, but really I would have used any good excuse. Like it being Thursday.

DD you can TOTALLY do it. 2 hours in the car is nothing. I bet he sleeps the whole time.

And really-worst comes to worst-you pull over. Not a big deal and YOU GET YOUR RING!

Get that courage lady-I take the twins out by myself all the time-and even have gone pretty far with them!

LOL! Now there's a kick in the pants! I think it is travelling to another country that sort of makes me nervous... I go places with him for sure, but there is just that added bit of annoyance going over the boarder. I think you may have convinced me though! I can get it on Tuesday!

Honestly, I am amazed by twin mamas! Packing those babies in the car and just ehading on out! I have one little boy, I can''t imagine two little handfulls! Though I imagine the hardest part by far is trying not to DIE from the CUTENESS! When you hold them its a whole armfull of yummy little boys. Honestly, I want all boys...

Those last two sentences could be read the wrong way, but people I refer to babies only!

I''m getting my ring on Tuesday!

I''m a gonna drive all by my little ol'' self to the big bad US of A and get my RING!!! Woot woot!

They will send me pictures this afternoon. I hope it looks huge

Eh, we''re not that bad over here! LOL! Yay for getting your ring!!

I''m so glad you decided to go get it!! I''m sure your little guy will sleep and hang out the entire trip. Can''t wait for pics!!

Great!

Don''t worry your little guy will probably sleep the entire time. Anytime my daughter wouldn''t go to bed all I had to do was put her in her car seat and she was out like a light. Many times she just slept in her car seat instead of her crib. (Of course I would always bring her into the house. I woild never leave a child in a car unattended.) Come to think of it, she can still fall asleep in the car when I am driving and she is 16.

wait, we aren''t supposed to do that??

I hope he sleeps the whole time, but he isn''t wild about his car seat. It often makes him spit up, I think our carseat just sucks!

Woohoo, so glad that you decided to go and get it. Can''t wait to see it.
