And he brought it home. You know, like little boys do. At least it wasn''t in his pocket.

We can''t tell the species, but it''s a medium brown with darker and lighter marbling. He has it in a closed container poked with holes and a clear top, and put some paper towels in it which he then got wet with de-chlorinated water. A couple chunks of dry bark so he can also get up on something dry, and he actually ate a couple tiny worms - we fed him by dangling the worms in front of him, and he snatched them right up! He doesn''t seem unhappy at all, but we don''t want to kill him.

We plan to call a local pet store that specializes in reptiles later, when they open, but I thought I''d ask for advice here in case someone knows what to do

If you guys don''t want to keep the little guy as a pet, why not just let him go back into the wild? An alternative would be to go to a pet store and get a $10 5-gallon aquarium and keep him as a pet! Since you have found foods to feed him, you wouldn''t have to spend money on food. . .just a few decorative items for his tank

Aww, no pics?

Be sure to do some internet research. Pet stores often give out strange advice. For all you know, they'll say you should let him go and buy an indoor acclimated salamander (from them) instead!

ETA - I just did a quick search and read that Salamanders should be handled as little as possible because of their delicate skin!

MP, I wonder if there is a risk to you since you are preggo. Do they carry samonella?? Just throwing it out there....

A neighbour kid brought my sister a salamander one day and somehow I ended up with it. I researched about salamanders in my area/climate zone and called the local pet store to find out info. Their skin is very delicate, we only touched him when we cleaned the tank every few weeks, and only to take him out and put him back in (it creeped me out too much so I cleaned the tank and my sister picked him up, lol). We fed him crickets mainly and kept him in an aquarium with a lamp, a little swimming pool, some bark and a cave. I kept him for a year, then called the local animal conservation place and they said to release him in the spring nearby a pond. He was so happy to go into the pond! It was adorable. I still miss him.

I thought about this, so I haven''t touched him at all. My husband has only touched him to move him so far - we read that the oil and salt on our skin can be harmful, so he washes his hands and rinses them really well, then keeps them wet to move him.

We took him to the pet shop, and the owner looked him up in a huge book. He said he is a tiger salamander and will eventually turn yellow with darker marbling. He told us all the stuff he would need (which thankfully matched all the stuff I found online beforehand), and so we got him a larger container and plan to get him a real aquarium (with very little water) next weekend when I get paid. We got him a bunch of tiny crickets, too, and he seems to really like those. He''s SO cute!

MC, when we went to the pet shop they didn''t have any salamanders, but they said they do get them from time to time and they like to recommend them as pets to kids because they are really easy to take care of and cheap to maintain. They will eventually learn their owners voice and smell and will come up to the side of the cage to greet you. I can''t wait for ours to do that!

Gwen, we saw Ponyo last weekend, and when we took the little guy to the pet shop he kept running to the side of the box I was facing like he wanted to see me, and my husband started quoting the movie. "Ponyo loves MonkeyPie!" So his name is now officially Ponyo lol. Go see that movie if you haven''t, btw, it SO adorable!

Little creatures are so funny, aren''t they? My betta already comes up to me and is trained to eat from my finger! He ignores everyone except for me!

LOL free food without having to search for it! Clean water and a mommy and daddy that will spoil him rotten. Hah.

Okay, but someday the little guy will want to know who his real folks are.

He''s a cutie, MP!

He sure is cute - I opened his box this morning to peek at him, and it''s a little chilly outside this morning so it was cooler in our house. When I lifted the lid, he picked his head up off his rock to look at me, reeeeeal slow. But he acknowledged me at least lol.

We are so getting him a heat lamp on a low setting. Poor little guy seemed cold.
