What are some subtle ways of phrasing this? Have to be tactful in today''s economy. "Hope to increase my role, move to the next level"--what would you suggest?
Are you asking for a raise or a promotion? For a raise I''d go in with examples of how you''ve gone over and above the call of duty on numerous occasions. For a promotion I''d ask for more responsibility.
I have done that over past years and pointed out specifics acomplished. However need a wrap up phrase indicating I would like some acknowledgement of this beyond words. Looking for promotion I suppose.
You can''t be subtle about this. Guys aren''t subtle about asking for raises but somehow too many women become shy when it comes to their career. You have to lay out your accomplishments, point to a peer doing similar work at a higher title, and tell them you believe you deserve a promotion commensurate with your responsibilities.
Ditto PP. You can talk and talk and even physically show them how you excel in your position but if you''re not closing the deal then it''s pointless. Now that you know what it is that you want-Promotion (with a raise-deal with that after) then you can formulate your closing statement.
I''d schedule a meeting with your boss and tell him/her directly you would like to have your performance evaluated. Bring a list of the accomplishments you have achieved over the past year especially if those achievements have had a positive effects for the company. Clearly illustrate why you are such a valuable member of this staff and show how you think you could be a better value to the company in an expanded role. It never ever hurts to mention that you are happy with your current employer and wish to remain a part of the team for an indefinate amount of time (of course, it helps if you really do feel this way); and state that you are looking for more of a challenge within the same company.
If there is a particular position you have in mind, I''d have a frank and honest conversation with your boss about what you would need to do to be considered for the new role. Just be careful about stating you are looking for more responsibilities without specifying the expectation that a change in title or expanded role would also mean a salary increase. Sometimes offering to take on more can mean taking on more without instant promotion perks and expanded roles do not always equate with raises, especially with so many employers having to make cuts to the payroll roster.
In this day and age, accomplishments entail anything you have done to increase the profitability of your company, whether you vastly increased production or found cost saving methods. Even though your efforts may have increased a company''s profits, a company reinvests its profits and lately companies haven''t been reaping the benefits.
While you think you would like a raise now, I would wait to time your request as you follow your company''s bottom line. Requesting a promotion (but not necessarily with an automatic raise) will show your company that you are in there for the long haul, and have the company''s best interest at heart. Make sure that you let them know that as things get better you expect that upper management will take care of you (financially, that is). And best of all, get it in writing.
The line that comes to mind goes something like this..."I''ve demonstrated my investment and commitment in our organization, but feel this has not been reciprocated and thus I this a raise/promotion is appropriate." Hope that helps, I''d also have a number/title in mind b/c I''m sure that will be the next question! Good luck!
