How old is too old to wear a bikini?

vintagelover229|1339719938|3216505 said:
When I was a teenager and in my really early 20's (I'm 24 now) I wore them. But even the past 2 summers (I'm now expecting) when I was still 5'6" at 108lbs and busty I stopped feeling comfortable in a bikini. I just don't like having that much skin exposed and don't care if ones that cover you up aren't "fashionable"-I've searched high and low for conservative swimsuits with out much luck. I have found one lady who makes maternity swim suits and regular ones-but they aren't free (not bad for custom though). I'm very pale and I burn easily and I don't like the girls hanging all out there and how small the bottoms are-even maternity swim suits (unless you get a skirt but sometimes even then) they are pretty small. I've seen some tankini's but many of the tops still are low cut and the bottoms are small.
I'm attaching a picture (and the link to her shop) for her cute maternity swim suit (I actually did get the bottoms-hoping I could find a top that would work. We shall find out this weekend if I can find one or if I should have just bit the bullet and ordered one from her)

Here is her etsy shop

Wow, I didn't know swim burqas were available in the US!

But seriously, what if you actually want to swim? I can't imagine these are any more comfortable than wearing a dress and shorts in the water.

Also, where are all the modest swim lines for men?

Basically if you think you rock it, rock it.

Yup, this. Wear what you feel comfortable in, whether that's an itsy bitsy bikini or a full coverage scuba suit.

I quit wearing a bikini when my tummy decided that it liked hanging out over the bottom. :wink2:

here on PS we refer to it as "extra thick girdle"... :read:

The most fantastic swimming costume I ever saw, and I have been searching and searching to try and find one like it, was a black one-piece that had a lowish scoop front and low back and sort of shorts that stopped upper or mid thigh. Reminded me of a sporty costume of the 30's. Very art deco. Looked just fabulous, and my friend who wore it had hair down to her waist that she wore piled up on her head. I tell ya, she looked a trillion bucks. I've searched high and low and found something vaguely similar.

Wear what you are comfortable in, but for me personally, a cool sassy one-piece is definitely my way to go. Anyone seen one of these?

Ed. to say that the red one is bit like Mrs Christmas goes swimming :)

LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As someone who lives in a sunny clime, I have to say bikinis don't bother me too much.

It's the THONGS  that have a time limit.

But I do think that once the bikini top is more like a breast hammock, it may be time to give the one pieces a closer look. :D

That should have come with a warning sign....you and Kenny nearly made me choke on my sparkling water.

I think that anyone should be able to wear a bikini. If you don't want to see it, don't look. I tell you what...some men outta wear those swim burqas. Jus' sayin... Why are we picking on the Ladies?

p.s. Forgive the formatting. I can't figure out how to use my daughter's computer well.
p.s.s. 50 is the new 30. Rock that bikini ladies!! Or board shorts...whatever... :saint:

When we were in Germany we went to a beautiful lake with some friends. We saw women of all shapes and sizes in bathing suits including bikinis. A lot of them were "too old" or "too fat" for them, but they looked like they were having a great time. I really admired their attitude. I think people spend too much time judging others, and worrying about being judged. Life is short. Have a good time, enjoy yourself and feel comfortable in your own skin. If other people have a problem with that it is just that, their problem. If you feel good in it, I say wear it and have fun!

This! I much prefer the European attitude toward bodies.

Agreed! Maybe we should start a new topic on "How old is too old to wear a Speedo?"

I stopped wearing a bikini when I stopped working out every day (hurt my back/ needed surgery), then gained a few pounds and things started to "wiggle and jiggle" a bit more--I'd say I was 43 the last time I wore a bikini. I wouldn't be as comfortable in one now and I feel great in a once piece--although Curvy Girl makes me wanna go explore my options of a 2 piece! I'm all about wear what makes you feel great. If you feel great in a bikini then wear it proudly. :appl: Of course I will say the larger you are, the more you have to look for a swimsuit with the appropriate coverage--Curvy Girls Blog demonstrates this perfectly.

Ha, sorry 'bout that! :cheeky: And after meeting you in Vegas I know you could rock a bikini! Same for you, Beacon!

Speaking for myself, as well as other cranky people of a certain age, I would appreciate seeing a lot less of everyone. I don't care how nice they are-put your bits away in public. I just can't take anyone seriously if I have to look at their tatas while we're talking.

Ok you enablers =)

I just ordered this top from Victoria's Secret - not the bottom, it's too tiny - I will use a black one with more coverage that I already have. DF the chances of me posting a photo of myself in this are exactly ZERO - ha ha ha! I pretty much only swim at night anyhow so hopefully can get away with this one.

I like Kaleigh's suggestion of using coverups - that is the next shopping item for me.

Funny, Kenny.

That reminded me - I've noticed in the past that one piece suits frequently were less expensive than bikinis. You have to pay more money for less material. Wait, what?!

Less material but a lot more cutting and seams, so they take more time and are more labor intensive.

I come from a tropical country and we tend to see it differently. You wear a bikini as long as you want to. In the beaches here, there are little girls in bikinis and little old ladies in bikinis. Slim ladies, curvaceous ladies and over weight ladies. If you feel comfortable in a 2 piece suit, you wear one. Simple as that.

as it should be. i would add that if you are asking the quesiton, you're too old.

skip the whole question and go nudist/naturist!

Disagree. Asking a question does not define your age or your obligations. Nor does it define your self perception. It is merely a request for feedback based on the aggregated reflection of what the current culture/media is telling us.

What is interesting is the shifting concept of women and how they are seen at each stage of life. The responses on this board show it is different depending on the culture and is a moving target within a given culture as perceptions change. What is perfectly acceptable today was considered terribly inappropriate some years ago. What goes in Germany might not go at all in another country. (I imagine a woman in a bikini would be in big trouble in Saudi Arabia, for example)

Given the quick rate of change, it is pretty understandable that women will seek feedback. Just recently a friend showed me a photo at a party of a woman in a certain dress. Apparently some felt the woman was dressing to "young" for her age. My friend asked me if I thought this was the case. I personally thought the lady looked fine. But it speaks to the fact that women now have a much wider range of options compared to the past. It's good, but also can be confusing ! =)

I heard a wonderful quote once . . .

"What others think about me is none of my business."

if you have to ask the question, you're too old.
some of us, like me, weren't bikini material even when young!
wear in good health ladies...personally, i'd rather go to a nude beach.......or used to.......
