How much is too much cleaning?

So I searched for this topic but couldn't find anything.

So what is too much? Is there such thing? I'm planning on getting a jewel jet. Seems to be the consensus of PS unless there is something else better I failed to notice. Is once a week too much? Is everyday over board?

you can steam your diamond ring every hr.. :wink2:

If it's in the cleaner more than it's on your hand, a line has been crossed.

Seriously, PSers are all over the board in terms of how often they clean things. I confess to being a bad PSer at this point in my life and cleaning my earrings (which I wear every day) about once a week. There definitely are people, previously me included, on here who clean their jewelry daily (maybe more!). It seems to make them happy, and doesn't appear to harm the pieces any, so I think it's an individual choice.

That being said, if you're a hair stylist or a pastry chef or something like that and don't take your rings off at work, well, more rather than less!

(Helpful, huh?! :cheeky: )

ETA: I do remember posting a pic of one of the iterations of my engagement ring and being chided (by Mara, I think!) for not cleaning it first. Us PSers, we can be an anal lot!

I clean mine at least once a day, but tension settings are sooooooo easy to clean.

Clean yours as often or as seldom as you like.

I don't use an ultrasonic much anymore, I don't think it's any cleaner with that than when I do it myself. I usually steam them, esp the band, once a week, Sat or Sun usually. Otherwise I clean nightly before I pack them up, and sometimes in the morning Ill wipe down with alcohol. My schedule of late has not allowed my leisurely ring-spa'ing and louping, which you will all be pleased about.

I drop my diamond studs in the drink (connoisseur's) every time I take them out. When I wear a diamond ring, it generally gets a dip when I take it off for the day.

No such thing as too much cleaning IMO - but I'm anal like that! I clean my jewelry every day as I just can't take a dirty diamond!

The only caveat to this might be pave settings - an ultrasonic can work to loosen stones. So many ways to clean diamonds and all of them good - especially if it's done on a regular basis and dirt and grease not allowed to pile up around prongs. Eeww!

I think its a personal thing. I work with a girl who was fascinated by my ollo clip pics, so I brought it into work one day to take pics of her rings. OMG! the most disgusting gunk and crud was embedded under her prongs, all over the diamond pavillion and girdle... it was DISGUSTING! (to me) and I emailed her her pics and she was just thrilled with "how beautiful my diamond rings look up close"!!! UGH!! I was going to throw up... clearly "cleaning your rings" is not an activity she partakes in!! :knockout:

For me, I'll do my earrings once a week, my ering/wb probably every 2 or 3 days along with my Barbara pendant and I clean before and after wearing a RHR if I'm putting it away and wearing another RHR. I love it when they sparkle like mad because people always comment on how beautiful my rings are, "and how come mine don't sparkle and shine like yours?" Um... clean them??? ;))

My platinum diamond ring lives in ammonia cleaner fluid 24/7 when I'm not wearing it. Brush, rinse, dry and wear.

I think I might be the worse PSer because I never clean my diamonds...but about once every few weeks or so I ask my dh to clean my ER and WB for me...but that's about it. Whenever we go to my favorite jewelry store however they always clean them for me as well as any earrings/necklace I might be wearing at the time so that's something. :)) I do have an ultrasonic and steam jewelry cleaner at home but it's so big I rarely take it out to clean my jewelry. ::)

I don't know however if I am a really bad PSer because my rings always look sparkly to me and I am always getting compliments on them. Though when they get a good cleaning they look even more awesome! I am so lazy... :knockout:

HI:

I admit to almost never cleaning my rings. When I am running out the door--I might give them a mini scrub while on my finger--if I remember. Maybe I should buy a box of alcohol wipes--that would be easiest. My jewellery cleaner is pre WW2 and works when it "wants"....

I probably clean my gold earrings and chains more than anything--amazing how grimy they get.... :knockout:

cheers--Sharon

Hi Sharon, I'm glad to know I am not the only one! Maybe we should start a support group for PSer's who don't clean their rings enough... :cheeky:

HAHA Missy..... How's the beachhouse??? It is hot and dry here.....yumyum just the way I like it.....

cheers--Sharon

Ooh, I wish I was where you are Sharon! It is pouring here right now! Though we did get a bike ride in this AM so I am thankful for that and about 10 minutes after we got back the pouring rain started. And since the weather is not too favorable for anything outdoors right now we are headed to the outlets...looking to replace my wedge sandals that are irrevocably broken :(( . The cobbler said no way to save them so hopefully I can find a suitable replacement.

Enjoy your lovely weather and think of me when you are on your river runs- they sound like a lot of fun! :wavey:

I don't clean mine very often either, but the weird thing is they really don't ever get dirty! I only wear them for social events, so that's probably why.

ewwwwwwww

I would have had to clean the ring before I took any more pics. I have cleaned my sisters and my moms and my sister's mother in law's as well. all were disgusting.

From an appraiser's real world....

Once a day is great!

I see everything from the super freaky clean to twenty-five years worth of Grandma's meatballs hidden in diamond rings.

Let's see..that's 55 minutes in the heated ultrasonic and sure we have 5 minutes left to do your appraisal.

The worst case includes a client taking off her earrings caked with make-up and who knows what else and handing them to me to appraise.

It's like going to a doctor's appointment without taking a shower first.

Some folks hardly ever clean their jewelry and that's just wrong...on so many levels. :nono:

   oh my, Modified Brilliant!!! There must be a boat load of stories you could tell!! That's funny about the 55/5 minutes and Grandma's meat balls! I think i found some ground chuck under my friends ring, when I took macro shots!!!

But thanks for the info that daily is ok... woo hoo!! Let the OCD cleansing begin.... :loopy:

I like to clean my ring every evening just after I brush my teeth, but sometimes when life is really busy I only get a chance to clean them once every few days.

I'm fairly sure that all PSers would agree that if jewellery develops a "scent" it's time to give it a good scrubbibg.

Yay, every day is overboard! lol Maybe right after you get your jewel jet, you'll clean daily...but then settle into a routine.

I clean my ring probably once a week and then any time I have plans to go out, I clean/polish everything I'm wearing especially if it's a place that I know has good diamond lighting!
