Hi Psers ,

I was waiting in line to get my son from school ,I put the car on park and began talking on the phone .cars suddenly started to move , I put the car in reverse instead of drive and hit a pole that was a meter away to the right ;( .of course nothing happened to the pole but my car's bumper got ripped off from the side . I am thanking God that I did not hit a person or another car ! lesson learned : no talking on the phone while driving .

Arrgh, I am so sorry to hear this. This is totally one of my anxiety dreams - that I hit another car and it is totally my fault. Its such a pain in the rear when it actually happens. Thankfully, there is no one else involved and you are okay.

Glad you learned your lesson about cell phones while driving.

I have been in several accidents, thankfully all minor.

1. Someone pulled out in front of me and I couldn't stop in time so I T-boned her. Her fault; my car totaled.
2. A deer ran right into my drivers side door. Both doors on the drivers side and my front quarter panel had to be replaced.
3. During a snowstorm, I started sliding down a hill and was about to slide into a busy intersection so I intentionally drove my car into a ditch so I wouldn't go into the intersection.
4. I got rearended

And not an accident that I personally was involved in...just my car:

Someone backed into my parked car and caused several hundred dollars worth of damage.

I swear I am a magnet for minor accidents....even animals want to hit me!

I have been a passenger in a crash two years in a row now. First one I was texting and didn't see until the driver yelled"we are gonna hit". Second one I saw coming and tried to relax so as not to break every bone in my body. I was badly injured in both, but the second one haunts me at night when I lie down and close my eyes.

3, all minor and not my fault. First one, guy running red light clipped my car. I was OK, my car was not. If he hit me a few miliseconds earlier I would NOT have been OK. He hit my rear door, noone else in car. 1987 and I was driving a tiny car, no airbags.

My senior year in college, I was getting off the highway, stopped and waiting to merge into traffic and when was rear ended and pused into pole. Got out of car, turns out it was a professor at my school who rear ended me! She was soooo embarrased an apologetic. Car was damaged but fixable and her insurance paid.

Third time, I was waiting at a red light, stopped. My new baby (who is now taller than me!) was in his baby seat in the back. and I was rear ended by someone on their phone who did not realize the light was red and not paying attention. i was fine, but took my baby to the hosptial to make sure he was OK. After some tests, they determined he was OK. I was told his baby seat saved his life and had not been properly strapped in, he would have been severly hurt. He has some marks from seatbelt over chest, but nothing major. That was my scariest because of my son.

I am VERY fearful of car accidents. And that baby boy now has a learners permit! I hate hate being in the car when he is getting his practice hours. I am required to be with him when he drives to get practice but is scares me. I prefer to be the driver than passenger in acar.

edited to add, I forgot about drunk driving accident where my mother WAS the drunk driver. She ran a red light and hit someone with me in the back seat ( I was about 10) I was OK, she was injured, hurt her neck. I don't know what happend to other car. Awful awful thing. I can't stand people who drive drunk.

I have been in several myself. The worse was as a young new driver. I saw five cars turn left in front of me and thought it was a light but it was a stop sign. Got T-Boned by oncoming driver. Who ended up being someone I went to high school with and we were nowhere near where we grew up. The worst part was I got spun around and ended up three lanes over, in the opposite direction. I looked back and saw glass all in my son's empty car seat and passed out. This road is always crowded with tractor trailer and while they cut me out with the jaws of life, the police officer just kept saying how lucky i was. He was 5 months old at the time and I had just dropped him off at daycare. My car was a month old and it should have been totaled. But they fixed it anyway. My family saw the mangled car before they saw me and thought I was going to be pretty bad off but I was just sore. No broken bones or anything like that. I just remember waking up in the hospital thinking I was so lucky to be alive. I haven't really gotten over it but I am trying to force myself to drive more often.

I had six accidents after that one was my fault because it was raining and I hydroplaned into the back of a little neon with a rubber bumper. They had no damage, my car was an absolute wreck. Which was the same one that should have been totaled. A couple fender benders later, I parked that car called the lean holder and told them to come and get that car. It was an accident magnet and I refused to drive it anymore.

I had a Nissan sentra thats frame rusted out and spilt open down the passenger side when I was turning a corner a quarter of a mile from home. Nissan paid all my bills, bought the car from me and sent it to their testing facility to make sure it never happened again and we settled out of court.

I got hit by a senior that should not have been driving a year after that and luckily there were witness because she was screaming " You hit me!" Over and over again. They fixed the car but apparently the frame was bent and now I can't sell the car. I really do hate driving but my panic attacks about it have gotten much better and I am finally venturing out a bit more.

I have been in a few.

When I was changing stations I tapped a car in front of me but all was okay. (I was in my teens)
2 times I have been hit at the stores like Costco and grocery store and both times needed body work on my car.

good idea on not using your phone in the future. I never use my phone while driving, too dangerous

I hope you are okay and I am sorry that happened

Oh no jeweln! I'm sorry you hit a pole but I'm glad you or anybody else didn't get hurt!

I've been in one accident many years ago. (Knock on wood) I was rear ended during my senior year of high school during my lunch break. I remember a bunch of kids kept stopping by and volunteering to be a witness to get an excuse to skip class! :naughty:

My brother on the other hand is a MAGNET when it comes to car accidents. Everyday, I'm so so glad he is here with us. When he was younger his now wife ended up going to college 5 hours away so he would drive there to see her. One time, he was driving back early early in the morning and he fell asleep behind the wheel. He had the cruise control at about 75mph and he crossed the huge barrier that separates oncoming traffic and hit a semi. He was so lucky because he hit it at just the right spot that all he got was a neck brace. But when I think about how even a split second could have changed everything... It's still so hard to talk about!

My brother has also gotten his car stolen, rear ended, parked and rear ended, the whole passenger side was scratched deeply with one of those shopping cart pulling machines, and his best friend totaled his car. He has had two totaled cars in total. He's a freaking magnet and it scares the heck out of me. Yes. We are all grown but he's still my little bro!
Sorry for the long post!

I was rear ended on the highway, in a 6 week old new car, while stopped in a traffic jam. I could see the guy coming behind me, going WAY too fast to even have a hope of stopping... it's like watching a slow motion movie and you just know it isn't going to end well... and it didn't. Thankfully, I was fine just very sore and that lasted a few days. The moron who drove into me, both his airbags deployed and he was covered in airbag dust when he came racing out of his car (yes, on the highway!) and asked if I was ok. I was stunned and said "You. HIT. ME!" and he REEEEEEEKED of alcohol!!! totally stank up the window frame. Turns out he was a local member of provincial parliament and wanted to keep it on the QT. Yeah... your reputation was the least of my worries!! There was a lovely lady who stayed with me the whole time and I sent her flowers at her work the next day --- I was so comforted by her presence, I just wanted to acknowledge what a difference it made in how I dealt with the experience.

Knock on wood, nothing since then and hope to end my driving days with nothing further to report!

Added note - DH's only sister was killed in a car accident 30 years ago.

minousbijoux, orbaya ,aprilbaby ,enerchi ,asscherisme ,charmed one ,skippy ,yaytacori ,

I am glad every one is ok after all these accidents ! I am still getting nightmares of my own though (the accident happened 3 days ago ) .
I used to love driving ,now suddenly it is a chore .I actually dread going to my son's school every day and waiting in the same spot ;(
today coming back I saw a fresh accident ,a woman hit the wall of an apt community .the police were there ,her car was damaged . she was sitting on the footpath in the hot son looking down .I felt sorry for her .

I've had a few. In chronological order:

My mom rear ended someone while I was in the front seat. It was terrifying because I saw it coming and she was doing about 35mph. Everyone was ok in both cars, but she totaled my dad's company car.

A couple years later she was driving us to the mountains and fell asleep at the wheel. We spun out and ended up in a ditch, but no one was hurt and only minor damage to the car.

Like Skippy, in high school I looked down to change the radio and tapped someone. I broke a turn signal on my car, no damage to the other.

A couple years later I got rear-ended by a truck on the freeway. Traffic came to a stop, but the driver didn't see and drove into the back of my car doing about 40mph. Because he didn't see it coming, thus didn't hit his brakes (and was driving a big truck), two drivers behind him drove into the back of his truck. I was pushed into the car on front of me. Car was majorly totaled.

About 5yrs ago, on my way to a job interview--late and stuck in terrible traffic I rear-ended the woman in front of me. I think I was distracted because I was so stressed out. She got out of her car and she was PREGNANT! I barely tapped her, but felt just awful anyways. Burst into tears and she ended up consoling ME! Luckily I was only doing about 3-5mph, so she was ok. Just a few scratches on her very nice Lexus' bumper, no damage to my heap (of course). About $1000 to repair her bumper, but more importantly, she was ok.

Last year I was driving stressed, tired and very low blood sugar. Sitting at a light, it turned green and everyone went. I saw the car in front of me let off the brakes so I let off the brakes on my car. Unfortunately she was driving a Prius, and I guess they don't really go unless you give it gas. So I rolled into the back of her car doing about 2mph. One tiny scratch on my bumper, $4000 in damage to her car. I guess older Prius' have flimsy bumpers.

6 months ago I was on the freeway when a truck lost its load of terra cotta pots a few cars ahead of me. A truck swerved to avoid, the car in front of me hit the truck, I hit them, then a car rear ended me (and left the scene). The CHP somehow gave me 100% fault in the accident. I had to sit down in a formal interview with the officer and his superiors and make a big stink about all the mistakes the officer made in his report in order to get it changed. They ended up giving us each 33% fault, but somehow the guy who caused the accident got out of it Scott-free. That seemed unfair to me. Oh, and that accident caused my car to burst into flames and burn to the frame in under 5 min.

I would be perfectly happy to never drive again, but I live in LA, so that will never happen. *sigh*

tuffyluvr ,
oh my God you have had so may bad experiences .your car going into flames must have been pretty scary !

Jeweln, I know what you mean. I had to go by my worst accident spot everyday for a couple years. It took a long time to be comfortable driving there. Thankfully, the state noticed that there were too many accidents there and added a traffic light three years later. It will take some time to get over. I think your thankful to be ok but still think about what could have happened. At least thats how it was for me. But thankfully it didn't jeweln and hopefully you can get past it quickly. It nothing like learning a lesson but how you came to learn it, sticks with for a while.

I've only been involved in one car accident... It happened on the day my car reached 100,000 miles - I even took a picture that morning.

I was rear-ended by a car full of 15 year olds driving a stolen vehicle. They slammed into my bumper and then drove away. Luckily I could still drive and there was another witness to my accident driving by that also took off after them up the hill, motioning out our windows for them to pull over. They were scared, but just kids, and did pull over. I approached them and kind of felt out the situation to see if they had any information (I didn't know at the time that they were 15 driving a stolen vehicle), and when they told me that they didn't have a license and that they were driving a "friend's car", I knew I should call the cops. I told the girls I was calling "my insurance company" so they wouldn't freak, but I really called the police. They asked me if anyone had been injured and when I said no, they told me that if nobody was injured, they wouldn't come out, even though I told them it was 15 yo's driving a car that didn't belong to them. I did take pictures and got the license plate etc. but when everything was said and done, my insurance contacted the registered owner of the vehicle who said that it had in fact been stolen and therefore his insurance wouldn't pay for anything. That was a joyous day.

Sonnyjane! That's horrible! What kind of nonsense is that! The cops didnt come out?! Uh hello! Stolen vehicle!

charmed one ,
it is true ,I get nightmares of the things that might have happened . I hope to be like your name in the future !

Glad the only thing that is bruised is your ego. I have been in two fender benders. The first, I rear-ended a brand new BMW. There was rubber necking due to another accident and I didn't slam on my breaks soon enough. Luckily no one rear-ended me. The other driver was SO nice. I reported it to my insurance while waiting for the police and it all went smoothly (the repairs). The second time I was rear-ended on the freeway. The other driver was rude and lied to me. It took her 10 days to report it to her insurance (her insurance had to track her down after I reported it). She told me she called while we were waiting for the police.

Two years ago I rear ended somebody. No explanation for why I did it...I wasn't texting or anything. I just spaced out. I still have flashbacks about it that really jolt me to be hypervigilant in the car. I think it was one of those freak things, and I pride myself on being a pretty good driver. My car was totaled, the other guy got away with a scratch. I think he felt bad for me because I was crying hysterically.

When I was 17 I tapped the bumper of a driver in front of me, freaked out and threw it in reverse, and tapped the front bumper of the driver behind me. No damage to any of the cars, just a funny story.

ETA: Sorry about your accident!

Did the same thing, ihy. Rear-ended somebody -- pretty minor, nobody hurt -- I simply had brain freeze. No excuses, wasn't on the phone, nothing. I've had a few other accidents, none my fault. Two were scary because of how bad they might have been, thank goodness, weren't.

Tooling down the road nearby, a neighbor of mine hit one of those Smart Cars. An elderly man ran the stop sign & because of a big bush on the corner, my neighbor didn't see him until too late. He was killed. She had a few injuries, nothing major, car totaled. Took her a long time to be able to drive without emotional reactions. I've wondered -- don't like to ask her -- how you live with having killed someone, even though it wasn't her fault in any way. Feel so sorry for her!

Enerchi, I'm so sorry about your dh's sister. What a tragedy. :((

Jewln, I am glad you are OK!

Unfortunately, I was the cause of a car accident when I was in my early twenties. Totally my fault. I was on a parkway in stop and go traffic- it was in the summer around 7:00 pm rush hour. Very sunny still. And I became distracted somehow (I tend to do this sometimes- nothing to do with cell phone etc as I didn't even have one at that time) and I rear ended the car in front of me. :knockout: Anyhow, thank goodness no one was hurt and the guy whose car I hit was so darn nice! He couldn't have been sweeter (to be fair I did most of the damage to my Corolla and his car had very little thank goodness!) and people stopped to let me use their cell phone (cell phones existed but I didn't get one till 2004!!). I was so upset and mad at myself but as far as accidents go I was very fortunate that no one was injured (except my poor car which was totaled basically) and the man involved was not mad at me even though he had recently been in another accident a few weeks ago and now his car insurance company would probably drop him (New York has no fault car insurance so that really hurts the person not at fault- not fair).

I learned an important lesson because of that car accident and I try really hard to always pay attention while driving. It can be difficult for me because for some reason I fade out sometimes (for lack of a better description) but knock wood so far so good and I concentrate on paying attention always while driving no matter what. No distractions allowed!

Laurie, how awful! As much as I like those smart cars (and all those smaller cars) they are just too lightweight and dangerous if in an accident. Give me a heavier less fuel efficient car any day. Safety has to come first.

I was pulling out of a tollbooth n the parkway and a truck carshed into me and sheared off the whole right side of my car and proeeded to speed up and leave. I was so shaken up I couldn't remember the license plate and the State Police weren't able to be of much help with the description I gave them. Fortunately I wasn't injured, but I wasn't badly shaken up. Another time I was rear ended at an exit booth by a woman who was on the phone {I watched her in the rear view as she ploughed into me}.

As for people who text or talk on the phone while driving: I get so angry, but I won't go there :nono: I'll just say they are idiots and leave it at that.

ihy ,jewelfreak ,missy ,
actually I too get a brain freeze sometimes .whenever I stop at a traffic light ,I tend to look sideways at landmarks .once I was waiting in a traffic light and a police car stopped at my right .I was so busy looking at his car that the light turned green and I did not move for a minute . I heard a thud ,the driver behind me released his break and bumped lightly into my car .I was so shocked that I just continued to drive and he went away ( but I wrote his plate number ) .then I stopped the car ,thankfully there was only a minor scratch on my bumper .

Amber ,
you are right I was an idiot . lesson learned .

Missy, yes, on paper Smart Cars & other tiny critters are neat, but you can die too easily in them. I do wonder how my neighbor copes with having killed a guy -- mainly because I have no idea how I would ever get over it. I'd never buy a weeny car like that, too darned dangerous.

Amber, I had a similar accident. I got through a green light & traffic stopped while a truck made a slooooow right turn into a driveway. Saw in my mirror another truck coming from behind. He was not slowing down. I knew he was going to ram into me. Had a split second to put the gear into neutral so the transmission wouldn't be wrecked (it was a stick shift) & turn the wheel to avoid the car in front of me. Truck hit me with a BANG! My car shot forward onto the sidewalk -- I missed a phone pole by barely an inch, whew. The rear was mashed up but I was ok, other driver too.

It's a very weird feeling to see a vehicle come toward you, know it's going to hit you, and not be able to do a darn thing about it. Also amazing how many thoughts go through your brain in nanoseconds.

I have had some really dumb accidents, and upon reflection I may not be a very good driver. :nono:

I got out of the car in my driveway, left the two kids in the car. Didn't put it in park or put the brake on. It s l o w l y headed for the wall of the garage, the kids yelling like crazy people. I jumped in the passenger seat and pulled the emergency brake at the last second. Darn kids still give me a hard time about that. Whenever anyone gets out of the driver's seat, we all say "Park. Brake.". I think it's mostly for my sake.

Another time I was coming home in the dark and couldn't quite remember where the mailbox was. Turned out it was right there, putting a giant scrape on the side of my car.

Another time I pulled into a gravel parking lot with decorative rocks around the flower beds. I dragged one of those rocks for about 5 feet before I realized it was stuck under my car. Apparently, it did some kind of frame damage.

Then there was another time I was pretty sure I could make it through an entrance gate before the little arm thing came down. . . . . . those things break a lot easier than you'd think.

I think I should paint my garage entrances the same color as my car, so the scrapes blend in easier.

I just got a new ritzy car, so I'm going to try to be a lot more careful. :o

ETA: But none of those are as bad as my grandfather's accident. He'd been drinking and instead of parking the car in the garage, he went all the way around to the other side of the yard and hit our giant pine tree. My grandmother had a solution, though; she had every. single. tree. in the yard removed.

iLander--I got a good laugh out of your stories... I think it's because I really relate--I don't think I'm the best driver either  At least your bad driver stories are harmless and funny!

yeah--my friends always joke around and never let me drive because they think that I must be bad luck  My car exploding in flames was pretty scary! Luckily I kept my wits about me. I was in total shock after the accident and couln't figure out why the airbags were smoking so much. then I saw flames coming from the engine compartment. I looked around to make sure it was safe for me to get out on the freeway, then I grabbed my handbag and shoes (I always take off my heels when I drive), and got away from that car as fast as I could! I didn't even have time to grab my belongings. Losing a bunch of work stuff, personal items and at least $1,000 worth of clothes that were to be dropped at the dry cleaner may have been the most traumatic part of the accident! you don't realize how much stuff is in your car until you lose it all!!!

ETA--I love how you can kind of tell what region people live in by the different names for freeway, highway, expressway, interstate, parkway, etc...

iLander, you made my night! I do love you! (But if we ever go anywhere together, I'll drive!) :wavey:

Ick, Tuffyluvr, scary experience!

LOL!

I'm getting better, though, I swear! I am reformed since I got my new-to-me car.

Did you notice that most of them happen when I'm close to home? I've learned it is important to pay attention until the key is actually removed from the car . . . Park. Brake.

I was responsible for one. I rear ended someone in stop and go traffic (going around 3 miles an hour, but still managed to break my headlight and their tail light).

Have been in the car when 5 different people hit deer.

Have been in the car 3 different times when people have put the car in a ditch, two of which were due to icy, snowy road conditions.

Have been in one other semi-serious accident with FI. We were driving in the snow at night, and I'm not entirely sure what happened (I was asleep in the passenger seat) Next thing I know, I was looking at pavement out the window of the SUV we had at the time. No injuries, and the car needed to go to the junkyard anyway. That was just further incentive to get it there more quickly.

When FI was all alone, he was in a turning lane beside a large oil truck. He was turning right, the truck had no signal on. Well, the truck turned right. It pushed FI's car into a telephone pole, and dragged his car around the corner, him honking and screaming the whole time (not sure what the yelling accomplished, but hey). It managed to damage every body panel on the car, save the roof and the trunk. :nono: Somehow, it ended up being his fault, too. :nono: :nono: :nono:
