Mine is atrocious and getting worse everyday which occassionally bothers me. But the other day I was watching a show on TV where the character had an Eidetic memory and I started thinking ... Not such a bad thing. True, I forget where I put my post-it reminders half the time (let alone what they were reminding me of) but... sometimes a fuzzy memory isn''t such a bad thing. Still, it can be bothersome.

How is your memory?

Short term is great, thanks to years of training it to retain stuff for the two days left 'til finals

.

Long term, not so much, I'm especially horrid with dates and numbers.

My memory is awesome if I do say so myself! I can remember conversations pretty much word for word and I'm also really good at remembering details like what people look like, outfits people were wearing, what the room looked like, when certain things happened, etc. I can conjure up really detailed images in my mind. I'm super detail oriented overall.

The only thing I'm not so good at remembering are appointments/events in advance. My sister or husband will tell me we have plans to do X or Y, or I'll have a meeting scheduled for work and I will totally, 100% forget it! Luckily I use iCal at work and it reminds me in time for work stuff! And my sister and husband are used to me being an idiot and forgetting about plans I make!

ETA Oh-and I'm really good at memorizing stuff for tests! I love multiple choice exams!

Reid!!!

I wish I was like him memory wise!

Being a little forgetful can be frustrating at times but it was getting to the point of being nutts for me. Seriously I''m too young to be forgetting stuff all the time, the kind where it''s in your brain but just can''t seem to get the info to come back out. Or completely drawing a blank on something super easy and random. Did some research, had my hormones checked, got on bio identical hormones for extremely LOW (none) testosterone and now my memory is normal again. I found it very interesting and amazing.

I have always had an excellent memory, to the point that people comment (ans sometimes compliment) me on it. It''s definitely one of my strengths.

Far from CRS. Hubby says mine is too good. I remember everything... every little detail. For him it''s bad... We will get into something, and I will say you said this.... He will say when did I say that?? I will say on Thursday, right before we went to dinner, don''t you remember??

I swear it''s a curse. Nanny was the same way. But have seen my Mom who doesn''t remember much, and that''s sad, and her short term memory is gonzo.

Ha Kaleigh, I''m exactly the same way with my husband! He''s like "Why do you have to remember EVERYTHING?!" Pretty positive he wishes my memory was a lot worse!

Huh.....??

For some reason the good Lord blessed me with the world''s worst memory (completely forgot the last two dentist appts.) coupled with the world''s biggest conscience. I am and forever will be in permanent conflict.

This is a sore point in our relationship as well!! We are on opposite ends of the spectrum, he has a crappy memory and I have a picture-perfect one. I still remember the guy who helped us buy duvets from the Bay 4 years ago! When we first started dating, I would remind him about things he said/did and he would deny it and we''d have a tiff. Now he knows better than to question my memory

I''m right behind you, Gailey. TGL also decided that I could do without any vestige of the organization gene.

So funny kama! My husband used to do the same thing but he''s also learned not to argue with the memory!

My old boss used to try to argue with my elephant brain, too, but he gave in eventually. He would always say my brain was like a brick. He just pulled that out one day because he was impressed with my memory and was trying to compliment me and it stuck!

I''d say my memory is average. I forget appointments and things on my to-do list constantly, but I can remember facts and general knowledge well. I''ve always been a good test-taker, but I can''t ever remember where I put my [insert daily necessity here].

One thing I will say: I know when I am right. If I''m not 100% sure of the answer to something, I''ll always say so, but when I know I''m right, I''m right. If I insist that I know something, most people who know me won''t bet against me (although DH still does and constantly wonders why he loses all these bets).

Mine is usually insanely good, although we all have our moments (i.e. whose dress did I copy the pic of and now can''t remember, haha, although in my defense, I don''t even think I read the post or the name of the poster back then!). I''m really good at remembering obscure things and random details about people, clothing, weather, etc.

I''ve never known how to "memorize" for tests and the like, but always just say, "I know when I know." I took a different state''s bar exam 3 years after taking my first bar exam and could repeat verbatim rules of law I learned the first time I studied.

I hope to keep my mind sharp through my later years since they say it helps with aging and mental deterioration. Alzheimer''s disease runs in my family

What was the question again? (buh dum DUN -- cymbal strike) Mine isn''t what it used to be. I knew Diet Sodas were gonna get me one day. I IM''d DH the other day to ask what MOVIE we''d seen a couple weeks ago -- the only movie we''d seen together THIS YEAR. Maybe that more of an indictment of the filmmakers than my memory but ... what was I saying?

I forget sometimes that it''s quite nice to be forgetful! Tomorrow is another day as they say!

With mine is like I have to tell it to remember stuff, then it's great. What I mean is, it's great for facts and figures, things I've studied for or read out of interest, and I remember appointments etc, good a taking tests. But I'm terrible at remembering what happened yesterday. Who said what, what was the sequence of events, faces etc. If I had to be asked to describe the person helping me at the checkout counter, or what my colleague wore to work yesterday, there's no way I'd remember. I embarrass myself all the time by meeting a person I've forgotten I met already. I usually pretend I know everyone now, I've worked out a good generic greeting that works for those I've met and those I haven't. I lose arguments all the time because I rarely remember who said what. If I concentrate and really try to remember things, like a day out or a party a last year, then things come back to me.

In short, I'm great at table quizes, awful as a witness, and would make a great enemy - I'd forget why we were fighting!

Anybody know any good memory training exercises to help me remember conversations and events better?

Long term: Some say-

There is a lot more info out there now, with the internet. We are exposed to so much more dminutia that it may seem that we cannot remember it all because we are bombarded.

Short Term:
Often, the school psychologists point out to us (I am a teacher) that short term memory and anxiety are closely related in the brain. This is why being anxious causes some students to bomb on a test.

So, the psychologist will emphasize to us in meetings that what we think is a problem with short term memory is actually anxiety, it is just so well hidden we don''t recognize it.

HA! Now THAT is the kind of information I remember!!! Seriously.

I used to have elements of eidetic memory - you know - visual type, someone asks you something and you mentally pull up the book, the page, the fact that the paragraph you recall is halfway down the page on the left, and then you can recall what it said. Alas, that type of memory has not stayed with me so much.

I find nowadays, that my attention span is just not what it was. I think there are several reasons for this, and not all of them are strictly "mental". One is dealing daily with chronic pain, the other is menopause creeping up. I''ve heard enough stories from my friends to understand that memory and concentration can be affected during that process. I''m hoping it will settle out on the other side. I''m not saying I have a bad memory mind you, I don''t. I feel my memory is quite good, it''s just that I really can feel a difference from when I was in my 20''s.

I can''t remember converstions. I know that she explicitly stated this, but I can''t remember the conversation building up to it or after it. I only remember that part that stuck out the most.

I used to have a really excellent memory. When I went back to school almost 3 years ago, I thought it would help to preserve my brain plasticity, but I think it''s had the opposite effect. I feel I''m too young for this, but I''m losing little details here and there, and forgetting entire conversations! Perhaps this can be attributed to stress!

Mine is fairly good and I''ll often remember extremely random facts which makes me great at bar trivia and things. However, my number memory is atrocious for some reason. I don''t know if I''m number dislexic or something, but you can tell me "172" and an hour later I''ll be sure it was "727" or something random. I always mix up the numbers. It''s very weird, especially because I''m an engineer - people always expect me to remember every little flow rate or line speed, but I have to look it all up.
