Do you arrange by author, genre, both, current, etc? I'm getting more and more books and I want to make sure my system is good.

I have listings for each genre, a current reads section, samples I want to buy, novels, short stories, and then some favorite authors that I have a few in a separate section. I put the books in every category that applies to it so I can find it.

Do you have any other suggestions for organizing??

Somethingshiny, you are way beyond me. I didn't even know you could do that! How do you do it? I have thought about it
and wished I could.

On the Kindle, when a title is highlighted you can use the toggle and push right. A listing will come up and you can "add to collection." Then you can put it in an existing collection or label a new collection. If you highlight the title and toggle left, you can delete the item. First it will delete from the collection it's in. If you delete again you get the option to remove from device.

Once you have a collection started, you can highlight it and toggle right to get a list to add/remove items. Then you can toggle through and select as many as you want to add/remove at once. All of the titles in your device show up when you do this. So you should start now if you want to get many more books. After my initial organizing, it's very quick and easy to add new titles to collections.

Play with the toggle from your Home screen.

I sort my books by genre. I have fiction, romance, urban fantasy, vampire books, fantasy, historical fiction, and mystery/ thriller.

I only keep a few at a time on my ereader and I have it listed by most recent.

Marcy~ I've been thinking about only having a dozen or so on my device at one time but thought the constant emptying and refilling would be difficult. Do you just keep your books at the Amazon thing or do you keep them on your computer? Can you organize into categories there too? I like to be able to go through all my sci fi or all my thriller at one time to choose a book.

I have a few collections on my Kindle ("Favorites", "Samples", "Unread", and then a couple series-specific collections like "Discworld"). Everything else is archived. The only books that are not in a collection are the ones I'm currently reading and then they eventually get moved to "Favorites" or "Archived". I hate clutter :P

ETA: The Favorites collection only has books I know I would reread. So maybe about 70 books. The rest (200+) that I probably won't pick up for a long long while are Archived.

I have collections...

Series (like Twilight..)
Authors (those that I have multiple titles from)
Chic Fic (just what it sounds like)
Samples (books I want to read)
Kindle Stuff (user guide, dictionary)
True Crime/True Story (non-fiction and stuff)

I didn't know I could arrange the books on my Kindle!

I'll probably categorize my books as follows:
- Favorites (AKA books I will eventually reread)
- To Read
- Read

I still read a lot of paper books, mostly from the library, so I only have a little over 100 books on my Kindle. Goodreads is another story, however. I'm trying to put all of the books I've read and want to read and own on Goodreads, so I have a lot of bookshelves on the site. If I used my Kindle exclusively, I'd organize my books in the same way.

Here's a picture of my shelf cloud on Goodreads: :cheeky:

Haven~ I stumbled onto Goodreads recently but haven't taken the time to shelf anything. I love your "better than the movie" and "gave up on" shelves!!

JOIN GOODREADS! You'll love it. Well, I love it. :cheeky:

I've already won a free ARC on Goodreads, too!

Thanks Somethingshiny! After I posted I started playing on the kindle and found that! That's pretty cool. I will definitely work on that!

I think my first collection will be to put the books in the order I want to read them, and then a collection of the classics.

As long as I've had my Kindle, I didn't realize I could do this. Thank you very much for posting how to make collections. This is going to make organizing my Kindle much easier :appl:

After you have added a book to a collection, is there a way to delete from your home page without deleting it from the Kindle. For example, can you archive it?

So far I have come up with the following collections. They are easy for me to remember.

Reading= what I am currently reading
Recommended= books I particularly enjoyed and consider them to be an excellent read.
Mystery and Thrillers
Dystopian Lit
Kindle Guides
Novels= do not fit in any other category. These are good to I wouldn't let my dog read them. The stinkers stand out and I don't need a separate collection for them.

I'm thinking of putting my samples into a collection, too.

Okay, so your post inspired me to join Goodreads . . . and spend a few hours adding to my bookshelves! I haven't totally figured out how to "add friends," but I would love to take a look at your list.

I'd love to see your books, too!

I recently reviewed Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, gave it three stars. If you look at the three star reviews you'd recognize me by my avatar picture.

ETA: The cool thing about goodreads is that you can "filter" reviews by the number of stars people gave the book. I use that feature a lot to see what the haters and the lovers have to say about each book.

Once you add a book to a collection, it's no longer visible on the home screen on my kindle (got it in October). If I delete a book, it automatically goes into archive. But I can go in there and add it back to the device.

Anyone

Yeah.... organizing.... 176 books on my Kindle and the thought never occurred! Perhaps I should look into this!!!

I am glad others didn't know you could do this also! I was feeling really dumb for not realizing it was even a possibility. Just so glad
to have it and enjoy books on it, I guess!

guess i'm a slacker.

i keep all of my unread books on the "home page" & then once i've finished a book it moves to my "read 2011" collection. i might make a "to read" collection if i think the home page gets too cluttered. i'm trying not to buy books way faster than i can read them. but i've gotten a few free ones that have me backed up on the list a bit.
