How have you helped Haiti?

Hi all. I was just wondering if anyone has donated to any charities, or done anything else to help with the situation in Haiti? I have organized a fundraiser at my school, and I know that many people are organizing fundraising events. Have you done anything?

I also was wondering how the Haiti situation is being handled in other countries besides the US? Anyone who lives in another country, can you give me some perspective on what's happening in your area?
 
I''m in Canada and we donated to the Red Cross. It''s ALL over the news every night here, with the phone numbers and web sites of the Red Cross and similar charities displayed.
 
I made my monetary donation through Oxfam Canada.
 
I donated to The Red Cross and Uniceff.
 
My company is matching all donations by emploees and then somehow donating it. I donated there.

I also donated to the hope fund we have at work which will be going to one of our employees. She lost her sister, all her nieces and nephews, and an aunt. They still have yet to hear any news about her husbands family, who all live there. She will receive the money to hopefully use towards travel and communication costs once something can be arranged.
 
I chose the Canadian Salvation Army based on their low overhead.

If you take a look at BBC news, either on the TV, or on-line, you will get a better idea as to the international response. No disrespect to CNN at all because I think they have done a phenomenal job, it`s just that they don`t report as much on global efforts as the BBC does.

Have you seen the other Haiti threads in Hangout?
 
If I could get on a plane and go help, I''d be there in a heartbeat. But since I can''t do that, I donated to a few well established charities.

Some good ones are:

Red Cross
Doctors Without Borders
March of Dimes (they are gathering donations for women and children)

I donated to Yele Haiti as well but it seems there has been some sketchiness surrounding that organization (???)

Oh Charbie, how awful for your colleague. I am sure there are many others who will find themselves in similar circumstances unfortunately. I pray that the news for her husband`s family will be more encouraging. Kudos for you and your other colleagues for starting a collection for her

Last night I heard from a friend that someone she knew who was volunteering in Haiti lost a foot after waiting for 2 days to be dug out. Fortunately she has now been casevac`d out of Haiti and is back home.

I found myself responding by saying that it was a testament to just how awful this tragedy is when you are thankful that someone has only lost a foot when in normal circumstances you would be horrifed to hear of a friend or a friend of a friend losing a foot no matter what the circumstances.

Canada is fast-tracking applications from citizens who want to sponser Hatian relatives to come here. Does anyone know if the US is adopting a similar policy?
 
The club I run at school (Jr. Red Cross Club), the National Honor Society, and Habitat for Humanity club have banned together to raise money. We hope to collect a record amount, and send it off asap!

We are donating all proceeds to the Red Cross... We are a very low income area, and I don''t know how much money we are going to be able to raise, but I figure every little bit counts! (I know many of us teachers are donating significant amounts, but most kids will be either just coins, or very small dollar amounts.)

Yes I have read the other Haiti threads, but I just wanted to put my own questions out there.

We decided to split our efforts between the Red Cross and our church''s relief fund for the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti, which I believe has the most members in a diocese worldwide.

Yes--we gave at church.

I have a birthday coming up and told the family to make a donation to Save the Children instead of getting me a gift.

I live near a church and my neighborhood is collecting clothes and money. I will hold off donating anything material as I don't think that is their priority now.

It's really difficult saying no the any request for aid.

I would dearly love to adopt another child, but that's not going to happen...
 
Yep, a Red Cross donation which will be matched by the Candian government.
 
I personally donated to the Red Cross. And at work we had a Jeans Day where you could wear jeans only if you donated some funds and I didn''t do the jeans day but donated anyways.
 
I donated to American Red Cross and Doctors without Borders.

Its such a tragedy in Haiti. Awful awful tragedy.

I donated to MSF here in Australia. I mentioned something about it at work, hoping to spur a colleague or two into doing the same (*especially* since we work in the medical/healthcare field), and they just said, "That''s really great of you." End of conversation. It''s gotten very little attention in Australia. The main new story in regards to it was when an Australian UN employee was confirmed dead.

I guess whatever is in your backyard is what gets the most attention -- for example, the Indonesian tsunami got WAY more attention and charitable funds raised in Australia than it did in the US. Things that are nearby are what really impact you personally.
 
Dr. Farmer (the award winning book Mountains Beyond Mountains was about him) link has strong ties to my area, our 1,000 high school students have raised 8k to send with some of our parents (ER trauma docs) to Haiti. For how you can help this organization check out here including collections of supplies. We are gathering school supplies and textbooks for the second/third wave of relief that will go over.


Right now, there is little need for anyone without highly specialized skills to travel to Haiti, in the NGO community they are called "SUVs" Spontaneous Volunteers, whose physical presence is more of a concern/hindrance than a help. If you know people who want to go and help that are not highly trained and experienced medical personnel, suggest travel to Louisiana with Habitat and send money to Haiti, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, etc, etc. Sadly the list will continue to grow of ravished lands, both by natural and man made atrocities.

We already sponsor an orphan in Haiti through this orphanage/organization and donated more after the earthquake:

The head of the orphanage is in Port-au-Prince right now to take back as many orphaned children as possible to a safe and loving environment. We saw Danita speak a few years ago, and it was truly inspiring. I understand she was interviewed by Wolf Blitzer on CNN the other day, but I didn''t see it.
