I live in sunny Florida and I visit the FI in Seattle, Washington which is best known for the rainy weather. This is my first visit where it was gloomy about 70% of the time and I noticed myself getting really sad and depressed and wanting to stay indoors. I''m just trying to see if I''m crazy or if this is normal and other people go through this too? TIA

I suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder. I get depressed from September through till April. I am on medication so I am not so bad now, but in the past I was severely affected. I was relieved to find out that it was a genuine illness! You aren''t alone!

Yep, this is really the case and many many people find their mood is influenced by the weather, although some people are affected more than others. I remember writing an essay on it for uni some time ago but can''t really remember much details.

I find after a week or so of bad weather I''m slightly more down, have more sevear social anxiety and tend to gravitate more towards dark coloured clothing where as when the weather is great (like it has been here for the past week) I''m upbeat for no particular reason, I wear bright colours and have (comparitivly) low social anxiety issues.

If it''s particularly bad during winter I try and change little things, like not allowing myself to wear black or other dark colours (the clothes someone chooses to wear is often a reflection of how they''re feeling that day and by wearing brights even when I really don''t want to, it does help me get out of the doom and gloom mind set) or just trying to smile more (genuine or not, smiling triggers chemicals in your brian which makes you happy so forcing out a few smiles in a rainy morning might provide a little mood boost). Spending some time outdoors when there is a small bit of sun could help too.

The only season that bothers me is summer. I wither when the temp gets over 85 degrees. Good thing I live 4 miles from the beach in San Diego! I love all the other seasons especially fall because it makes me want to get cozy.

I''ve never really thought about it before, but I am much happier in summer and the warmer parts of Spring and Autumn than Winter. Even when the mercury hit 50 degs celsius here, I still have happy memories of parking myself in front of our 20yo air conditioner trying to hear the TV over the whirring.

In winter it takes me ages to get out of bed, and my general outlook is a lot bleaker.

Wierd!

I prefer cool weather. I live in inland San Diego County and we are in the 90s for much of August, September, and October. I don''t get moody, but it does slow me down a bit. I struggle with the dry weather/fire season here because I get bad headaches from the dry heat. I find rain, clouds, and cool weather very pleasant. I''ve never lived in the snow, but I do not dislike true cold weather (snow and such) either; I enjoyed skiing as a teenager, I love spending time in Chicago and Manhattan in the winter and enjoy being outside while there.

The gloomy or rainy doesnt bother me much but it rarely lasts for more than a couple weeks in CA. I do hate the heat though. I stay in the house for most of
the summer, or by the pool if it''s not crazy heat. I get a headache that I have a hard time getting rid of, if I spend to long in the heat. My daughter works in
Palm Desert where it can get to 120 degrees, I dont know how people live there!

I feel drained and tired when it''s been too long without rain. Feelin'' it right now.

The more it rains, the more alive I feel.

Hmm, I don't know... I've never really thought about it. I have always lived in MI where there are definitely four distinct seasons. It gets really cold in the winter and super hot in the summer. Neither bother me, I do like the spring and fall the best. The only time the weather makes me feel down is around March when I'm waiting for the weather to get nicer. It can be a little depressing during that time of year. I really love all types of weather even when we're hit with lots of snow or rain! I do thinks it's very common to have your mood influenced by the weather, I guess I'm use to all the changes.

I get seriously depro in rainy, overcast weather. I''m used to constant sunshine. If I lived in London I would probably be really depressed all the time.

When the moisture is in the air the MIGRAINES come POUNDING

musey you need to move over here - it's been raining steadily for the last week!

I like a good shower too and get antsy if it hasn't rained for a while. I start to miss it, everything feels stale and dusty and I crave a good shower to wash everything down and make things feel fresh again. I love that smell when you can feel a shower coming on, and the smell in the air after a good heavy downpour

I do find it easier to be upbeat and sunny when it's, well, sunny

But in general I prefer cold weather as I don't like the heat. When it's cold, clear, and bright I'm in my element!

I miss the different season and all weather types. But if it rains or is gloomy for a few days-week, I feel a bit more sluggish around the house.

I am definitely not myself in winter. I hate being cold, I get depressed when I don''t see the sun, and I can''t stand how grey and dull everything gets! I loved living in Thailand and Singapore where it was warm all year, where the biggest seasonal changes were "Hot and dry" "Hot and kind of wet" "Hot and really wet."

I got very depressed when I lived on the west coast. Days and days of light drizzle that wasn''t really rain but was mostly gloomy really did a number on me over time. I love winters here though in Ontario. Yes, it can get very cold and we have tons of snow but, snow is BRIGHT. There''s a lot more sunshine here despite the seasons. Cold doesn''t bother me so much, I prefer it, but take away the sunshine for a good chunk of time and I go downhill.

I''m definitely affected by the weather. When it''s sunny and warm I''m in a much better mood than when it''s cloudy and rainy and cold. This summer we had over a month where it rained EVERY SINGLE DAY here in NY and I absolutely was negatively affected. I stayed in my apartment most of them time (when I didn''t have somewhere to be) and stared at the rain and it was just really depressing. I hate when it''s cold in the winter, but I love snow so it''s not as bad to me as rain.

I have also noticed that when it rains my migraines get much much worse - so that definitely makes it all SO much worse as well.

I absolutely hate the heat! I can''t sleep when it''s hot, I get irritable and I get headaches like no other. I get so PO''d that I start getting anxious. I just can''t handle it. I love love love cooler weather. My ideal would be the mid 50''s. Cool enough for a coat and scarf, but not cold.

I''m a bit weird in that I get depressed and want to stay inside if it''s too hot or too cold; I''m more sensitive to heat than most people (read: I''m a big baby) and if it''s above 80 degrees I have little desire to be outside away from air conditioning. I don''t really mind gloomy weather so much as I grew up in a very gloomy city and just got used to it. Other than mild mood changes (yay it''s sunny! boo it''s freezing) I don''t think I''m significantly affected by the weather.

I''m from the south and I lived in Seattle from fall 2000 thru fall 2006. The first year I wondered what everyone was talking about when they talked about the rain in Seattle. It wasn''t bad at all. Then the following year came. Oh the rain, rain, rain and the SHORT winter days- it starts getting dark about 415 in December and is PITCH black before 5. I had a really hard time the first year that the winter was really nasty wet and it was so, so dark. It was the last winter- 2005- that did me in. It was so, so wet and gloomy for weeks on end. I didn''t see the sun for 27 days. They were counting it on the news- it didn''t quite break the record. It''d been building up, but that pushed me over the edge. I moved the following fall back south, to Atlanta. I don''t get effected by the weather here at all. It''s just lighter in general, even when it''s gloomy. I will admit that I do occassionally miss a cool, wet day and the brisk wind. Especially when it''s been hot/warm for months on end and I just want a break from it. But I''ll take months of heat and sun over weeks of gloom any day!

I've lived in Washington State - right outside Seattle, for all my life and have had SAD. I'm on medication to minimalize the mild depression I get during the gloomy months.

Exercise is suppose to help a lot. Everyone I know goes to a gym or does tons of walking.

I wilt in the humidity and become very sleepy.
Otherwise, I *love* the seasons. Fall is my favorite, I love a good thunderstorm, and I think crisp winter days feel so refreshing.

Too bad I live in Chicago and summer is a really long, humid season for us.

I hate the heat. I absolutely despise it. I am an A/C junkie and spend all day inside when it gets above 80. Humidity and heat just make me tired, queasy, and cranky. Plus my hair is a hot mess!

This year''s transition to fall from summer has been particularly brutal with the warm, then cold and rainy. i don''t mind the cold and rainy, but it''s driving my sinuses crazy!

I much prefer fall and winter. Sweaters and a warm beverage from Starbucks is the best feeling ever!

How does the weather affect you?

Ha...hahahahahahahahahah!

I get wet - that is how it affects me. As you know I am building - jobs still need to get done onsite and if it rains they get done in the rain. The dog still needs walking - so I walk her in the rain. The chickens need tending to - so I do that in the rain.

This has been the wettest summer of my whole life - I have never been so soggy...ever.

LOL, it''s not THAT bad here! Today was gorgeous and I was out on the terrace doing some gardening with a big sun hat one

That said, bipolar disorder is often strongly linked to seasons - and mine definitely is... I always get my worst depressions in the winter and early spring and then get hypomanic very quickly when it becomes sunny. I''m now on meds so don''t get the problem anymore!

Its a reason why countries like Norway have such high suicide rates...

HI:

I absolutely love the heat and sun!! We live by the mountains and have moderate temps and precipiation--much more than I would prefer but I don''t feel depressed or have mood swings b/c of it. I recall when my DH had a job offer in Copenhagen we talked a lot about the cloudy skies/weather--something we are not used to in our very sunny Province.

cheers--Sharon

I can understand that. I couldn''t live anywhere like Norway. Its hard enough being in NE England! Funnily enough though I never got SAD when I lived in Germany. I wonder why...

Thanks everyone for your input! I''m back in FL and I feel sooooo much better now that I''m back! It''s good to know that there are others who are in the same situation as me. Personally, I prefer the warm weather even if I have to stay indoors for AC. As long as the sun is out, I''m happy. It''s actually cool to know that the reverse is true for some people too! If I move to anywhere like Seattle, I''m going to look further into SAD and contact my doctor since I''m pretty sure I''d need help.

I DESPISE summer. I get SAD in the summer. It''s so hot you can''t do anything. The sun ruins your skin, mosquitoes, kills your energy, etc. Could totally do without that season.

I ADORE fall & winter.

My dad gets seasonal depression. They now go to Arizona in the winter and mom says he is a different person when there.

I have always really enjoyed the winters up until last year.

I got a new job last June which I have to ride the city bus line and ride work shuttle buses to and from work or to and form parking lots outside the city.

I have to stand and wait in the freezing blowing cold 4 days a week at 6:00Am for buses. I hate having to be all dressed in career wear only to have to wear boots, hats and mittens with a scarf to boot to stay warm while I wait for my bus. Than walk several blocks after I am dropped off downtown. I have always worked jobs where parking was almost right at the front door of the business I worked at. I hate going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark for those months the days are so short.

I have always done things outside with the kids during the winter months. Last winter though, I just could not get warm and I hated going outside. I was always cold and I started getting noticeably sad by February.

I am not looking forward to this winter at all......

Where in FL do you live because I''m in FL as well and it rains everyday!!

The summer has no affect on me ever since I graduated from school. The warm weather used to make me happy since it meant beaches and pools but now there''s no time. Rainy weather makes me anxious. I feel like I''m confined to the 4 walls of my home.

My absolute favorite is cold weather. It makes me feel calm. Funny thing is that I hate being cold at home and prefer to keep the house at 78. Go figure..
