How did you decide where (in general) you wanted to live?

Re: How did you decide where (in general) you wanted to live

I would never want to go back to the town I grew up in. It's a nice city, and I would recommend for other people to live there, but I guess I feel like I've been there and done that.

I also wouldn't mind moving further away from my parents, because they love to travel and would visit all the time if we lived somewhere cool like the pacific NW. I don't have any siblings either. They're currently 7.5hrs away by car, which is doable, but certainly not close.

DH really wants to stay in the northeast within driving distance of his mom, because she doesn't fly and it would be very stressful if both of her kids moved far away (my SIL is currently in Texas, which is very far). Luckily I love living in this general region or I think I would be resentful that we were tied down here. I love being able to drive to NYC, Boston, the mountains, and the ocean in no more than a couple hours.

I grew up in the midwest and while I love both cities I lived in I HATE the weather. I just cannot handle the long, cold, gray winters. Like Zoe mentioned, I love the weather in NC. We still have all four seasons (I LOVE fall), but our winters are short and mild compared to the north. I also wanted and like living somewhere with low cost of living. Home ownership is important to me. Honestly, I think there are many places in the US I would be happy.

To answer Sabine's question, I have to fly home. 10 hour drives are our limit and I believe it is 15-16 hours.

Low cost of living is great. I miss our condo in NC because the rent was incredibly low for the area. If I worked in a different field, there's a chance that we might have stayed for a longer period of time. We've driven a few times from NC to where we live now, and it's taken about 16-17 hours. It's not fun, and I can imagine it would be exhausting to do with a toddler. A former coworker of my husband, and his wife, do that drive often throughout the year. I'm not sure why. I'm not sure that they really save much money, with gas prices and hotels, etc.

I think DH & I would be happy in a lot of places... I'm a midwesterner and he's from western PA. I can't say that I'm in love with my home town, but it would be great to live within a 6-10 hour drive from there. We're currently in Colorado, and while the weather, mountains, and metro area are GREAT, I often miss fall. And our families! ;(

I could see us moving to Virginia so that we could drive to see relatives... If not there, we'll stay in Colorado. It will be tough, however, if/when we have kids and if/when our parents' health begins to fail

This! I'm from Western PA, and DH is from NC.
I <3 fall, so I'm sure it'll greatly be missed, from both DH and myself.
And while we wouldn't move to VA, NC, or back to PA where most of my family is, we still struggle with lack of family in CO when we are ready to have a child. We're trying to get our families to move to CO
And the ocean. I miss being semi-close to the ocean.

Re: How did you decide where (in general) you wanted to live

Bf and I are still trying to figure it out. We're moving to CO in a few weeks since we got sick of flying there all the time for skiing. I hope this one sticks, we've moved to a different state every 2 years since graduating from college in an attempt to find our "home." I guess we're trial and error kind of people, it's kind of fun and kind of annoying (moving itself stinks).

Oh, I just saw that you live in CO Beachrunner. If you don't mind me asking, what area? I'd love to hear your opinions about it!

Hello! :wavey:
I live in Denver, about 4 miles from downtown. My DH and I just moved here in November from the east coast. So far, we love it out here! We are in the process of buying a house so I guess you could say this is a permanent move for us!

Where are you looking to live in CO?

That's great to hear! You must be in the Wash Park area or there about. I love being closer to downtown but my bf wants to finally have a yard (we've been living in cities). I was there 2 weeks ago and we looked at houses in Genesee, Greenwood Village, and Cherry Hills. Looks like it's going to be Cherry Hills or Greenwood Village, but I'm going back next weekend to look again. So hard to find anything there, all the houses are old and dated. Plus we're young and don't want to be surrounded by kids, so it's been a bit of a trying experience.

What do you think of those areas?

Threadjack! Sorry in advance. (Ah, this is where PM's would come in handy!)

There are many suburbs in the Metro area. I personally haven't made my way down there too frequently. I like a running store in Greenwood Village, and have been to the movies in Highlands Ranch. I much prefer living close to the city; we have a little yard (well, hopefully!), and a little house, but it's enough for us right now. From what I gather, southern burbs are very family friendly with bigger homes, etc. I dunno, I like being able to walk to a big park and see the city skyline with the mtns in the background. Ahh!

But, I just moved here as well, so I'm still learning!

Re: How did you decide where (in general) you wanted to live

Ok, thanks Beachrunner! Last question of this threadjack (sorry!), any other areas you could recommend looking at? I'm going to be there, so I wouldn't mind having a few more options. Thanks again!
