How come my avatar is blurry?

Every time I downlaod a pic for my avatar, it comes out blurry. I always change the size to 40x44 pixels. What am i doing wrong?

Try sizing it to 96 by 96 pixels and then uploading it.

yes i never use the 40x44 (even though i know the upload page says that).

i do 96x96 and then upload. it must be resized first or else it will distort.

if it's not a square picture, and it resizes to something like 92x96 (be sure to keep ratio/scale), then i put it on a black background that is 96x96 so that it won't distort when uploaded.
