So tragic. I can''t imagine what the families are feeling.

Oh gosh, that is so tragic; they must be sick with worry. My strongest prayers outgoing for the families and friends.

I can''t imagine what they must be going through. I pray for all involved.

We heard about it right after it went missing. Grateful it''s not a Boeing. Here''s hoping that it was storm related (iffy IMO) and not a terrorist attack. I''m not saying that it couldn''t have been lightning, but hey, heavy''s get hit by lightning all the time and they don''t go down. Also, typically even if there was storm damage the pilot or copilot would have had time to call in a mayday. Planes don''t just drop like a stone for the most part, there''s normally time for chatter.

I don''t like this, but I really want to be wrong.

Oh sweet jesus that is unimaginable. Those poor families. I can''t imagine much worse.

The American couple was from our area. They moved to Rio a year ago....he is a geologist and they moved for his job.

My heart hurts for everyone involved.

Yeah there was a pilot speaking on the radio earlier this morning saying something similar. I really hope that it''s not that.

I heard that on the news at lunchtime yesterday and my heart just stopped. Those poor people and their families waiting for news. FI was saying to me that if it was an emergency landing they''d all be in boats and likely would be just fine, but that there would have been radio contact if that was what had happened

purrfectpear can I ask why you''re grateful it wasn''t a Boeing?

Awful tragedy.

Even more terrible that it is such a mystery and will likely be some time before loved ones have any real answers.

My heart goes out to them.

I feel awful for those families, and my prayers are outgoing....

Just heard about the debris on the radio. They say it will take until tomorrow for ships to get there and identify it.

PP - do you mean because of poor Boeing sales recently that this would be a final blow? Or is there some other reason your grateful it''s not a Boeing?

It''s such terrible news--I feel so awful for the victims and their families.

This is seriously one of my greatest fears, and why I hate to fly. I don''t care what the stats are...

HI:

Felt sick upon reading the news....my heart goes out to all effected....

cheers--Sharon

How tragic and sad! my heart and thoughts are with the families right now.

I work for Boeing. We always feel the emotional impact when a Boeing plane downs, even when the cause is pilot error or weather. It just makes it more real when it''s our bird.

As to the idea that people would have been in lifeboats if it ditched, that''s not the normal outcome. Unlike the recent pilot that landed on the river in NY (he''s quite the hero), even a somewhat controlled ditch in the ocean, with waves, at night, would probably result in a broken airframe and loss of life. A catastrophic failure pretty much guarantees no survivors.

What a tragedy.

Such a tragedy. I feel so sorry for all the victims and their families.

Understandable PP. I don''t know anything about the statistics of plane crashes but I assume it''s an extremely rare occurrence, statistically speaking?

I don''t remember the exact stats (and would only have australian ones, anyway), but you''re statistically far more likely to die in a car accident than a plane accident.

That being said, this is a horrible tragedy

It''s in quite a few of the papers over here today that there was a bomb threat made against an air france plane leaving South America. Hopefully it''s not correct though. That would be terrible.
