Conventional wisdom says that what happened to Bridgeman is impossible. Like many of the 5-10% of the population living with stereoblindness, he was resigned to seeing a world without depth. What Bridgeman experienced in the theatre has been observed in clinics previously – the most famous case being Sue Barry, or “Stereo Sue”, who according to the author and neurologist Oliver Sacks first experienced stereovision while she was undergoing vision therapy. Her visual epiphany came during the course of professional therapy in her late-forties. The question is why after several decades of living in a flat, two-dimensional world did Bridgeman’s brain spontaneously begin to process 3D images?
Fascinating!

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing that story!

Wow, I'm super jealous. I wish that would happen to me.

amazing.

That's so interesting. I never heard of it before. For that guy it's like he put on the glasses & his brain said, "Oh, THAT'S how you do it!" & presto changeo. What a thrill it must have been.

That's interesting. I'm not stereo blind, but I do have stereo impairment. Both my sister and I were extremely nearsighted, with the lazy eye in which we could focus one eye, or the other eye, but not typically both. Because our eyes were relatively even matched, we were instructed to do various eye exercises, in which we would close one eye, follow a finger closer or farther away, then do with the other eye, and then try to do with both eyes.

Even so many of those trick books in which you have to focus a certain distance to have something else pop out, or the test using stereo vision to combine two views, often do not work on me.
So I was surprised when we went to Avatar I could experience the 3D effects.

I've never been able to see in 3D. I've had about 2 dozen surgeries, tons of therapy etc. Nothing has ever worked-it would be amazing to have that "a HA!" moment!

Perhaps try watching more 3D movies? I'm sure gemstones would look much more amazing. :naughty:
