Do you and your family have traditions other than gift giving during the holidays? My husband and I have been together for 6 years, and I can probably count on one hand the number of gifts we''ve given each other. We prefer to do something instead -- go away for a weekend, go to a play or a concert/dinner in the city, etc. We don''t need any more *stuff* around the house, so giving each other trinkets and such would basically be a waste (not the right word, really, but I think you know what I mean).

My parents and sister/BIL have said the same thing -- no gifts. We''ve all agreed, however, my parents are going to do something anyway.

Does your family do something similar for the holidays (or birthdays, etc.)?

I spent the last 3 years in the Netherlands and they have a fun one there. I don''t know if this is a nationwide tradition, but it was big in our area. There was a secret santa draw every year, and whoever you got to buy a present for, you also had to write a poem about. Well, more of a basic rhyme about silly events/traits etc. On the night that the presents are exchanged, the poems are read out. They usually get pretty long and funny!

That sounds really fun Porridge!
