Hi Guys,

I hope you can help me with this?

For work reasons I have to take my main holidays in April this year. That means the weather will be much too cold to consider anywhere in Europe for a holiday. So i was kinda thinking of visiting the States.

Of course i have considered the Florida (disney package) but I do have a budget and with the air fare, accomodatiion and then tickets into Disney, it could start working out to be very expensive (though i haven''t dismissed it yet)

Is there anywhere else in the States that would make a good holiday (we are a party of two adults and two kids aged 12 and 13)

We really want to get some sun on our backs, after the long cold winter we have just had (in England)

Any suggestions would be really welcome. Also, if anyone has any tips on visiting Florida, then i would welcome that too!

The US is so vast and so I wondered where you guys go during your vacations. Please give me things I could consider?

Thanks guys....can''t wait for your suggestions.

Love....Blod

if you want warm I'd say Florida, California, or Hawaii.

What sort of family are you?
Personally I think a trip to DC would be fantastic, you could do all the different Smithsonian Museums; Air and Space, Art, Spy...they are all fantastic! Baltimore which is very near by has a fantastic aquarium and of course the zoo. Of course that is my taste as I am a nerd by nature. If you are a more active family there are a ton of lovely spot to go hiking and spelunking.

I agree with the above. April is not very warm here except in the states above. It can also be very rainy.

Yeah, DC would be very interesting, but they won''t get any sun on their backs

.

There are websites out there that will list the average weather and temperature for cities in the US. You should look it up and make sure you are not traveling to an area with cooler temperatures than you would like or into the area''s rainy season.

DC is great, but the weather will be iffy in April. I would try CA, or Hawaii. How long will you have for your holiday??

If you''re considering California, you might try Southern California in April....while it''s decently warm in Northern California in April, the "rainy season" is still not officially over so there''s a chance it could rain.

Arizona and New Mexico are beautiful. I love the desert and it''s not too hot yet in April.

If you come to DC in early April, you might be able to catch the Cherry Blossoms...

But you probably won''t get much sun. Though closer to May, DC can be glorious--all the azaleas and springtime flowers.

But if you are trying to escape the gray weather, the Southwest (National Parks are AWESOME) or Florida will be a better bet.

Take it from me everyone come to Orlando Florida around that time of year.

Depending on what you want you might want to check into Western North Carolina. The town of Boone is very nice lot of hiking, water rafting, horse back riding and lots of outlet stores, and where they filmed part of Last of the Mohicans. I am just a little in love with the area due to the fact I was raised there.

Actually, I have lived in the DC area for almost all of my life. April can be warm (70''s) and dry or 60''s and a little wet. Like anywhere else, you can''t guarantee weather, but in DC there is so much to do inside and if the weather''s nice, plenty more to do outside. Also, we don''t get rain every day even in a rainy month. May is rainier here usually than April. I''ve worn shorts in April and a jacket in May. I''ve been in California ( LA area) in mid-April and it was 65 during the day and 38 at night and it rained twice in one week. You just can''t know for sure.

You could fly into Florida and then leave on a cruise from there too...?
While DC would offer you a lot to do, its not the same kind of relaxing sunny vacation you seem to want. That''s more if you want to be on the go sight seeing.

If you''re primarily looking for a beach and water vacation as opposed to sightseeing, have you thought about the Caribbean?

We just booked a vacation to the Dominican Republic for cheap money. We''ve been there before- can''t beat it for fun and sun. Also, isn''t April spring break time in Florida? I''m so beyond college years I forget. You would want to stay away during that time due to crowds.

There''s nothing like Springtime in The Smokies. The Great Smokie Mountains in East Tennessee is beautiful that time of year(well all year really) and Gatlinburg,Tn has something for every member of the family.

Thanks guys for the great suggestions!

You''ve give me something to think about!

colonial williamsburg virginia
monticello virginia
cade''s cove, appalachian mountains, tennessee, gatlinburg, etc.
charleston south carolina
asheville north carolina

basically rent a car and drive in a big circle, starting in virginia. down the coast and up the back side of the mountains.

good luck!

I vote for Florida. You might look into Destin or Seaside. it''s farther north than orlando but it''s a great family vacation place. We love it there and are going back this spring. We''re waiting to do Disney until next December. Some of my family lives there and says the weather is about 75 and the theme park is not crowded at all...5 minute waits on the rides etc..

California native here, so I''m very biased.

How about a trip to San Diego. Best weather in all the U.S!

You''ve got a ton of great beaches, Sea World, Legoland, Coronado, check out a Padres Baseball game at Petco Park, Shopping. The list goes on...

{{{{But if you are trying to escape the gray weather, the Southwest (National Parks are AWESOME)}}}}}}

I agree with the above. I''ve lived in the East almost all my life. While there is lots to love here, I vote for the Southwest for several reasons. One, you said you wanted the sun on your backs. But also, the Southwestern United States are so beautiful, and different from so many other places. I think it''s sad how few Americans even take advantage of seeing how beautiful and unique it can be out West, especially as crafftygrrl said the National Parks. Disney World may be fun but it is all fake, yet so many tourists go there repeatedly instead of checking out some other places. The National Parks are REAL, and AWESOME as crafftygrrl said. Southern California, New Mexico, Arizona...etc... lots to choose from!
That''s my recommendation.

Disney is really not that expensive. I don''t really know about the airfare, but I have been looking into it for our honeymoon.. and hotel (in disney) plus tickets to disney for everyday we were there for a week in June.. was only like $2k for two of us, including meals. This was for one of the less expensive hotels.. I believe they have four levels and this was the second level from the bottom.. but still. I think its really reasonable for all there is to do there.

I''m in CA too and I love it here, Southern and Northern both has beautiful spots...you could start in Southern and drive to Northern over the space of a few days, sightseeing along the way, or vice versa. It is fairly warm in N. CA in April, warmer in S. CA.

But if you are looking for something really awesome, I highly recommend Hawaii! It''s 5 hours flight from California...so you could essentially visit S. CA and then fly to Hawaii or similar to break up the trip a bit. We adore Hawaii.

Further eastward, Florida is nice and warm in April....then again I am the type who almost has to be in a warm climate for every vacation, which is why I could never see us visiting Alaska or anything like that. I think I''d wilt and die!

Have fun planning!!

Agreed! I grew up in Hawaii and have lived in SoCal for 8 years. Either or both would be fine choices for a sunny break. Hawaii is noticeably more humid that SoCal, but not as humid as Florida. Hawaii would likely be a tad warmer, and the water probably much warmer if you wanted to go for a dip. No wetsuit needed at all. Hawaii is beautiful, especially the neighbor islands, like Kauai, Maui and the Big Island. Oahu is the 3rd largest, but has about 3/4 the population. Oahu has more man-made attractions and more to do, but if you just wanted to go sight-seeing, Kauai and Maui are probably better. Oahu isn''t without its beauty though.
SoCal is not a tropical paradise, but it''s really nice too. It also offers a wider range of things to do, including a lot of theme parks, which the kids would probably enjoy more. It''s one place you can surf in the morning and snowboard in the afternoon. (Everyone says that, but I don''t know anyone who''s actually done it.)

Look up the visitor''s bureaus for all state''s you''re considering. They''ll have all the highlights listed. Hawaii: http://www.gohawaii.com/

Of course if airfare is too much for going as far west as the Southwest or Hawaii, have you thought about the Carribean? Don''t know how much that costs hotel and all, but at least it''s closer to England.

california native suggests death valley and/or any of the southern desert regions. anza borego is a great desert park within driving distance of san diego. i''d also head to tucson in april....which i have done. if you''re luck, you''ll catch the desert in bloom. otherwise, i''d go to mexico. or if the carribean is a choice, the little island of Tobago just off Trinidad is a real off the beaten path get away.

closer to home, what about Malta?

Blodcat- I live in DC, have lived in FL, and have honeymooned in Malta, so if you go with any of those choices, I''d love to help out! (Used to live in England, too)

and i do think DC would be a great vacation! april can be nice in DC. it can be the tail end of winter or the very first burst of warm weather. tranportation is good. lots of things for kids....but no beaches.

I adored Hawaii for our honeymoon, but for a not so expensive vacation...I''d consider the West Coast of Florida...Sarasota...Naples...Captiva or Sanibel Island...I''ve been there quite a few times in April and the weather is piicture perfect!!! Oh, and the sunsets and the beaches are truly among the most beautiful this beach girl has ever seen!!!

Yeah...I like this idea. I would like to see something of your wonderful country, and not spend the whole time stood in a que at a theme park. The National Parks really appeal to me.

Thanks for the suggestion! (I''m going to do a spot of research)

That's a great idea Blod. I live in New Mexico and can attest to some unique and striking scenery out here with lots of wide open spaces and lots of sunshine.
