I'd really like to get my husband a tablet for his birthday but I don't know much about them. Can anyone make some recommendations? It looks like I can get one for $150 or so... are ones in that price range any good though?

Are either of you techy? I just got a Nook Color (NOT refurbished) from Barnes & Nobles's ebay store for $199, rooted it, and now it runs like a tablet. It's pretty easy, and there are lots of instructions online. However, you do void the warranty...

It's light, the colors are awesome, and it's easy to use. If you read some reviews online, you'll find that most tablets under $150 are not very good at all...

My husband is majorly into technology and I am a little. What do you mean you "rooted" it? He specifically wants something with the Android OS... can you do that to a nook?

I just went through this for xmas. I wanted one and my dh wanted to get me one but on a budget. I have to tell you the tablet he bought me for $250 went back after a week. It had Android 2.0 (which isn't the latest) and it had lots of lag and kinks. You get what you pay for.

I'm waiting for this spring when they're supposed to come out with many great options and all with Android 3.0. The ipad 2 will come out this week for $499 but since the android technology seems to offer a lot and less restrictions..I'm going with droid.

I would say go to CNET and see what they recommend and also which tablets are coming out soon. I heard LG supposed to be coming out with a good one. Motorola has been all over the TV with their HOT tablet but it's $$$$$$.

I wish I had more info..

If your dh wants to just use it for reading, I'd either do the Kindle or Nook (both are WiFi). The Ipad (1st generation) is going on sale because of the newer model coming out.

Considering your DH is techy, I don't think he will be happy with a tablet in that price range. It'll have the older os. According to DH, only android os 2.2 and up play flash. It will also be slow.

I've heard things about the Archos ones when I was looking this up for myself. Didn't get one though. The nook color is also intriguing because of what Fortekitty said. Do a search on rooting a nook color and you'll find lots of information on how to turn it from watered-down Android into fully functional Android.

My husband works in the IT field so he is quite techy to say the least. He loves all technology gadgets and said you get what you pay for when it comes to tablets. He recommends the Motorola Xoom and the Notion Ink Adam at www.notionink.com.. He said that they are the best for Droid. For a cheap alternative you can modify the Nook like Fortekitty did but nothing truly replaces a native tablet. The HTC Flyer Tablet is coming out soon and maybe a good alternative as well. Hope that helps!

The Motorla Xoom sounds fantastic, but it's $$$$$$. Same with the Samsung Galaxy Tab. I wouldn't spend that much on a tablet (for that price you can just get a netbook, which is more functional anyway. JMHO though.

My 2 cents: I got my dh a netbook 2 yrs ago because he wanted it (he's very into gadgets). After like a week he hated it. Too small and annoying for him. He's now looking for the perfect Android Tablet...he was going to get the Ipad but he feels he has more freedom on a droid.

I totally agree Atroop! Definitely worth it!
