I know nothing about this type of instrument.

Would you please tell me the best to measure stone?

Thank you very much!

Here's a good thingie to read . . . it also mentions proper technique.

You have to decide if you want a digital read out or a mechanical dial.
Digitals are easier to read correctly and dials take some getting used to for noobs.
Digitals use batteries and dials are fully mechanical.
There are also solar powered digitals.

If I was you, I wouldn't buy them. Just be happy with your stone, and try to not think about the details. The best case scenario is that you find out that it is what you expect and nothing changes, the worst is that you feel that your stone is inferior. It is a no win situation. It sounds like you are wanting a technical reason to love your diamond, but in reality, it is more like a piece of art. The numbers can't tell you everything.

Ditto.

You have a beautiful stone, Stci! Enjoy it!

You could spend well over $100 if you want a top brand like Mitutoyo or Brown & Sharpe but if you'd rather spend less this $32 model would work.

This one can read in mm or inches.

We have these http://www.amazon.com/Mitutoyo-500-196-20-Digimatic-Digital-Caliper/dp/B001C0ZPNO/ref=wr_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I3BH1Q0U862M5P&colid=1A3LQLVKXETRH & DH uses a bunch of other Mitutoyos in his lab - they do work great, very accurate, but the batteries drain *so* quickly - wind up replacing once a week or so w/ regular use. It's a pain.

I really want one cause I have other stones who need to measure.

Thank you all for your suggestions!

I like being able to verify for myself that the dimensions match the report or vendor's claim.
It is not conclusive proof the stone matches the report, but it is one step of the verification process.

Something changes.
I am more confident I got what I paid for.

Perhaps I'm less trusting than others when thousands of dollars are at stake on a product that can be swapped, either as a result of criminal intent or an honest mistake.

FWIW, I also use my calipers for other hobbies.

The fine print:
As always, since people vary I respect everyone's perspective on this.
Presenting mine does not mean I expect others to adopt it, so there is no reason to get your knickers in a twist.

Ahhhh.... But what if I wanna ;(

Kenny,
I hadn't really thought of them as a tool to help verify the stone! I have been using ours to squish aluminum foil into proper dimensioned blobs to get a better idea what certain stones would look like on my hand (ears, wrist...). Actually kind of fun and a great way to get a better idea what size I'm ACTUALLY wanting instead of just some number in my head.

TP you can twist up your knickers all you want.
Just be sure to post pics.

That's a great use for a calipers, very clever. :appl:
