Oatmeal is one of my favourite desserts. I usually have it with raisins, brown sugar, and cream, but I want to try something new.

I''d love to hear your favourite recipes!

Mmmm, I love oatmeal!

I like mine with a bit of honey and a sliced banana. Nothing too exciting, but it''s delicious!

I add walnuts, dried cranberries, raisins and brown sugar. I''m working on reducing the sugar and replacing it with
Agave Nectar.

I''ve also added hot cooked apples, nuts and raisins.

I just add cinnamon and sugar. When I was younger my grandma would make it with syrup..mmm! It was yummy but sooo sugary! I also like to add blueberries or strawberries if I have them.

maple syrup.....or a dark Dark DARK honey such as buckwheat or toyon....

Oatmeal is a dessert? Isn''t oatmeal porridge?

I have it in winter for breakfast cooked with sliced banana or saltanas and served with soy milk. The banana or saltanas make it taste sweet as does the soymilk so no need to add sugar or golden syrup.

Fresh blueberries and a little cream.

Dried cranberries and toasted pecans.

(Real) maple syrup and toasted walnuts.

Granola and vanilla yogurt.

Warm milk!!!

brown sugar + raisins. guess i''m not to adventuresome

I eat oatmeal every weekday for breakfast. Love it!

This thread had lots of great cooking tips and mix-in ideas. Enjoy!

I cook mine in milk instead of water. It really makes it smooth and creamy and so good. But I like good oatmeal if it's cooked in water too. I love dates and (dark and real) maple syrup-- so good. Or dried apples and cinammon and nutmeg with brown sugar. I've had it with Cranberries too and it's pretty good too, though I prefer dates by a lot. Have you tried golden raisens, BTW? A small change but excellent as well.

For a lower calorie option I do non-fat milk (as in cook it in non-fat milk instead of water) and Splenda and put some dates. Delicious.

I'm not a oatmeal and nuts person. I like oatmeal and I like nuts, just not together. Although if I had to add nuts: sliced almonds.

Mmmmm good ideas, keep them coming!

Cooked apples and walnuts is sounding really, really good...

Thanks for the link ChargerGrrl! Lots of yumminess to check out

Any way to stop it from mushing? I try to avoid the mush, which generally means undercooking a little.

I cook mine in milk and I prefer the old-fashioned oats instead of the quick cooking. I have added cinnamon, apple butter, regular butter, and brown sugar....all at the same time or a combination. Love it sweet!!!

Depends on what you mean by mush. I don''t care for undercooked oats; if you are talking about the starch and the ''gluey'' thickness of it with the bloomed oats in it for some texture-- that''s how I prefer mine, so I''m no help.

Haha that''s exactly what I mean

Yup. I like it and try to encourage it. No help, sorry.

Now you''ve got me craving oatmeal though. Mmmmmmmm.

To make it less mushy I add less liquid (whether it be water or milk..but I prefer milk!) and then cook them for a slightly shorter time. I microwave mine.. so I set it for 1min 40sec and that is usually good.

How ''bout a nice Santa hat to dress up that oatmeal?

Love oatmeal and most hot cereals...I dress it up with cinnimon, nutmeg and vanillia(in the boiling water)then brown suger and milk or cream...also sliced strawberries or raspberries once in a while instead of the brown sugar!good stuff!

I make my old fashioned rolled oats with milk, and add some chopped dried fruit before I nuke it -- usually raisins or dried apricots. Once it''s cooked, I like to add some sliced almonds and flax seed. Yummy! Oatmeal is seasonal for me, and it''s time to break it out again.

I love oatmeal, I can''t eat it though

My fave is with walnuts and maple syrup or just with brown sugar. Oh, and there has to be a little salt in it!

I like mine with cinnamon blueberries and a drizzle of honey, or with banana and cinnamon. I want to try with peaches

I add a touch of brown sugar or maple syrup and a spoonful of natural chunky peanut butter for an indulgent treat! Yummmmmm.

one of our family''s favorites is "swiss breakfast" - no clue why its called that but it came from a restaurant an aunt of mine worked at years ago... it''s a departure from typical oatmeal - so bear with me :)

QUICK oats - raw
sliced almonds
honey
fresh bananas, oranges, apples, blueberries (whatever you want but the first 3 I put I consider the staples)
half and half

Just layer it in the bowl however you want.. maybe put the honey on top of everything... and don''t cook the oats but make sure you use quick oats and you can use milk instead of half and half - but the oats soak up the milk and it tastes a little bit more like granola with it being uncooked but it also soaks up the flavors of the fruit.

I have known people who wouldn''t even try this because of the uncooked oats, but everyone I''ve known who HAS, has really liked it. Everyone also ends up customizing it to be their own dream bowl.
