Help me design a cheap trip in New York!!!

I'm about to visit my parents with my so in CT in a week or so. Since he has never been to the east cost, I want to show him around in New York for a day. Sadly, my knowledge of New York is only limited to the food in China Town . So please guide me to some cool places that's easy to get (we will take train to get to NY) to and wouldn't cost us much. Also maybe some ideas in CT as well~~

This is the cheapest place that I know of that's not a food cart;

It's off the main lobby, behind a little curtain. It's wildly popular at lunchtime, though.

My fave is Free Target Friday at the MOMA. Go at about 6, you don't have to wait in line.
