It''s my mum''s 50th in 5 DAYS (eek) and I have been completly side tracked by my uni work load and havn''t found somthing to get her.

I''m looking for any and all suggestions. What have you gotten some one as a 50th birthday prezzy or what would you yourself like to recive?

Backround: There are 3 of us contributing (Myself, my older sister and younger brother) and we are all broke Uni students so I think $100 for the budget at a strech or maybe more if I can get Dad to contribute. I''m the creative one so if nessesary I could making somthing (I have made her some paintings in the past for special occasions). Dad is taking her on a nice tropical get-away vacation so maybe somthing to complement that?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or stories about gifts you''ve given or recived. I really want to get her somthing really great for such a big milestone.

assuming she has a nice chain, why not get a nice shell pendant? starfish? or any other type that would make you think tropical island. i think you could get the pendant for your price range, but not the chain also.

What about a beach bag? Get a fabulous bag and fill it with things she''ll need on her vacay: a new pair of flip flops, sunscreen, a great beach book to read, a magazine, sunglasses, one of those underwater cameras, a travel book about the vacation destination, a big hat, and maybe even an ipod shuffle that you can have engraved from the 3 of you (I think those are still around $50).

I know it''s not a keepsake item, but it would be a fun gift and would fit nicely with her vacation.

Crown 1- I don''t tend to buy my mum jewlery - she''s not that into it and prefers to choose her own.

Elmorton- that beach bag sounds like a good idea. She does have an Ipod though.....

My sister and I have more or less decided to get her a massive voucher (with a contribution from my dad) to this place: http://www.thelostspring.co.nz/ so she can use it for the thermal pools, food, drinks, and some spa treatments. Dad will take her and pay for accomidation etc.

In addition to this, I was thinking about geting some dyes and fabric and hand painting her a sarong. Not sure what to paint or how much the fabric of dyes will add up to but I think it could work. Atleast then she has somthing to keep.

What do you think? Good idea or not?

What about a photo frame loaded up with family photos?

does she already have a digital camera? if not, give her one, inexpesive (you can find them under $100) (or even those disposable camera) then have her take all the photos she can from her trip, you take a few of your siblings and yourself, then when she comes back, you upload and print and make a collage out of it and matted and frame it for her (large frame), with some sort of engravings to commemorate the 50th years or something of the like then give it to her, so its like a half present until she returns.

love that idea- I gave one to my parents for christmas - since they are not tech savvy and this was even beyond what they would have been able to do for themselves.

4ever, i think this is a fantastic idea! A sarong she can wear on her vacation that is hand-dyed by her lovely daughter!!!

I would never have thought of that and I think you should definitely do it
