Hey ladies! I''m heading out to NYC in a couple weeks and I''m wondering if there is anything I need to do for sure besides hit up Broadway! I''m visiting my uncle who worked his butt off to become a partner in the law firm whitecase and I''d really like to experience things that I wouldn''t normally get to do because my FH isn''t into certain things and that my uncle doesn''t have much time to do. (Ex: broadway, art shows, fine dining, etc.)

I''d really really like to eat some place nice just to experience a different class of dining, etc. Do you ladies have any ideas? I''m really really exctied to see my uncle (I haven''t seen him since I was 8!) and see NYC. Any things I need to avoid or *MUST* see''s?

Thanks!

Well I can’t help you with the dining part because our trip to NY always consists of eating a hot dog while standing in line for something LOL.

My family and I are from Brooklyn but we never took advantage of the city. So last year, I took my bf there as a Christmas/his birthday/my birthday gift. We did every tourist thing imaginable and we had an awesome time.

Touristy stuff we loved:

The double decker bus—It’s $80 for 2 people but it takes you around the city and gives you a chance to see all the sites that perhaps you won’t have time to see. They’re also hop on/off buses so you can stop at a site, take photos and what not, and hop back on.

Top of the Rock. It’s really pretty and you get good pictures and unlike Top of Empire State Building, here you can actually see the ESB and it’ll come out in photos.

Central Park carriage ride!!! Our birthdays are within days of each other so as a gift for my b-day he arranged a 1 hour ride through central park. It’s a hit or miss sometimes because your tour guide can either be really cool or a total dud. Either way I loved it.

Statue of Liberty of course. Eat before as the prices are crazy and the food is mediocre. I didn’t go into the statue because I didn’t find it necessary. Don’t get on the free Staten Island Ferry! It doesn’t stop there…that was an hour wasted but we got cool pictures LOL

A comedy club because they’re good over there =)

I would pass on anything canal street related. It’s not necessary. I also would stay away from any of the chain restaurants there because it is extremely expensive. I think a TGI Friday’s appetizer here (FL) is about $8, whereas in NY it was $15

14.gif
!! There are plenty of pizza places for a quick bite to eat. We didn’t do a broadway show because we were limited on time but they have some cheap discount tickets sold on the streets.

For dinner, I would head into Little Italy. We went to Paisano for dinner and it was delicious.

Are you just staying in the City?

The Bull and Bear at The Waldorf=Astoria. It''s old school class and excellent food - can''t go wrong.

I''d try to see the Waterfall''s art installations on the East River while they''re up. Supposed to be fantastic and the artist is amazing, we saw his retrospective in June.

If you like museums, I always recommend MoMA and The Met. Both can keep you busy for days.

I prefer the top of the Empire State Building if you only have time for one "top of" experience because nothing beats the incredible Art Deco architecture of the Empire State Building. From the outside, from the inside, it''s just other-wordly and a must see.

What sort of food do you like?

Ooh White & Case...great firm...

Sorry, in the middle of law school. For some reason (lol) that part of your post jumped out at me RedRose!

Sadly, I have no suggestions - I''ve never spent enough time there to give you good recommendations!

Totally agree with you! We had dinner at Paisano after we got engaged and it was so romantic and cozy - and delicious!!!

Also, Top of the Rock beats the ESB hands down. It''s cheaper, the line is shorter (note - go online and order tickets - you skip the line!) and the views are Ah-maaaah-zing!

And, the double decker tour bus with the hop on/off option are great! We saved a lot of money on cabs and subway using them, and got a pretty cool tour of the city, too!

have a great time, I''m very jealous! I want to go back!

That''s the exact reason I''m going actually! Until you reminded me! I emailed my uncle after seeing that about 6 months ago! I''m excited to see that!

I like all sorts of food...but I''m a seafood and steak person!

SJG, respectfully, just because something is cheaper and the line is shorter doesn''t make it better...The ESB is iconic precisely because of it''s unparalled Art Deco architecture. There''s a reason the lines are longer and it''s pricier (and the views aren''t much different). It costs a lot to maintain all those Deco features, it''s a lot of polishing on a daily basis (my father used to have an office in that building for many years and I''ve seen the amount of time needed to keep it looking pristine!). Redrose, I''m glad you''re going to see it, you will not be disappointed! May I suggest going at the end of the day, while it''s still light out, but so that you''ll also get the evening lights view as well? Nighttime is my fav time to be up there...

If you love seafood, just wander around Chinatown until you see a place with seafood on the sign, you cant really go wrong there. Luna in Little Italy has classic old school Italian, but it''s cash only. If you want an upscale experience but not over the top, I like DB Bistro Moderne. Not quite as pricey as Boulud''s other places but fantastic food. You need to call now to see if you can get a reservation though as it''s always booked up.

I understand that, and I''ve actually been to both, however I prefer the Top of the Rock because you get the great view of the ESB.

Has anyone heard of the resturant Le Bernardin? My Uncle says it''s his favorite and he wants to take me there. Any clothing suggestions? Thanks!

Le Bernadin is probably one of the top French restaurants in the city (and super pricey). I''d recommend a nice cocktail dress if you''re going for dinner.

As far as a good steak place, if you can get reservations at Peter Luger''s, which is in Brooklyn, I''d really really recommend it! Otherwise, Wolfgang''s or Smith & Wollensky''s are both pretty good.

I''d also agree with Surfgirl''s recommendations for both the Empire State Building (I''ve never done Top of the Rock but if you''re going to do all out touristy, you might as well do it right) and DB Bistro (they have a ridiculous foie gras/truffles burger that is SO rich but INCREDIBLE).

Define...super pricey? I was looking at the menu...no prices (except for...supplement add $$$!) OMG I THINK THE MEAL COSTS MORE THAN MY SEMESTER TUITION!

Just want a heads up so my eyeballs dont pop out of my head...because it sounds like my Uncle eats there quite a lot...I don''t own a nice cocktail dress! OH NO! Anyone got a size 4 or 2 or so that I can borrow!?!?!

Don''t worry, you can wear nice pants practically anywhere in NY, including LeBernadin.

It is for sure pricey...They specialize in seafood, and the chef is highly acclaimed. Cost, with wine, is about $100+/per person. But the food is amazing and the presentation is extraordinary. And, OMG--the deserts!!!! Go, eat, enjoy!!

you could go to serendipity for dessert... I went and it was really good..and thats where they filmed that movie... its a cute lil place.. But id def call now for a reservation because the wait was like 2 hours when we went... and that was JUST for dessert... :-)

I''m sure my Uncle will take care of all that (thankfully). Seeing''s how he''s dined there before he probably knows the in''s and out''s of the place. Also, we''re eating there for lunch...do you still think we''ll need a reso?

Chef Eric Ripert is probably the pre-eminent chef on French seafood perhaps in the world right now. Revered by many who would give their right arm to dine at Le Bernardin. So if your uncle will be treating you, GO! And for godssake, get a little black cocktail dress because if you're old enough to be engaged, you're old enough to have at least one little black dress in your clothing arsenal! Yes I'm sure you can wear pants but it's LE BERNARDIN! And you're not paying! So do it up to the nines, I'm begging you. It's like when I go home to NYC and go to the theatre and it's filled with middle America in their Lion King sweatshirts, shorts and sandals with socks. Drives me batty. Going to a Broadway show? Dress UP. Not down. It's an event. Okay, so it's a pet peeve of mine, so sue me...But seriously, if you're going to Le Bern., get a nice LBD and enjoy the treat of a luxe evening at one of the world's best restaurants.

Oh, and if you go to DB Bistro and eat that burger with the short ribs and foie gras inside? You might want to phone ahead to NYU Medical Center and schedule a late night high colonic or an angioplasty because after eating one of those things, you're gonna need one or the other!

Do you enjoy proper afternoon tea? If so, The Pierre Hotel has a lovely tea and you're right across from the park, IIRC. I dont know if The Plaza has reopened their tea room atrium but that's nice as well, though it was always a bit too touristy for me.

Oh, and if you want to slum it and want to eat the essence of NYC, I highly recommend heading down to Houston Street to Yonah Schimmel Knishes, the most transcendent knishes in the world. But beware, they are monstrously huge. But delish.

LOL OMG! Your post made my laugh so hard! I''m planning on buying a little black dress. I do have one...but it has lots of boobie action going on and I AM NOT wearing that in front of my uncle. More for his sake and the sake I don''t want him to think I''m a slut. I know I should own a little black dress (I''m kicking myslef for not buying the one I tried on 2 years ago for 150.00 at cache'' btw) I NEVER go out like this EVER. My FH isn''t into things like "this". Which BTW you guys have NO IDEA how big of a treat this is for me. NO IDEA. I play classical violin and don''t get to go to symphanies because he''s not inot those things. It drives me nuts sometimes, but he likes other things as well.

I''m going to post pics of me in a few dresses and I''d like you guys to help me pick one out. I''ll try to find a few now (including the boobie dress
25.gif
) and you guys can help me decide. I''m also going to try on a few and I''ll post pics so you guys can help me pick out which ones to try on. Thanks ladies! I didn''t know you guys knew so much about NYC!

Here''s one I''m thinking about trying on

lbdb.jpg

Close up of front

My favorite place to eat lunch is Chelsea Market. They have all sorts of little shops to please anyone''s taste (cookies, ice cream, bread, seafood, produce, deli, italian, soup, wine, etc) and you can get one thing from each place and make yourself a feast. My FI and I love splitting up and buying food, then getting back together and sharing everything we''ve found. The last time I was there the potato pancakes at the jewish deli were particularly good. It''s great for people like me who want a little bit of everything all in one place
2.gif
Plus, Emeril films there, so maybe if you''re lucky you''ll get to spot a Food Network star.

I''ll add another steak house to the list: Mark Joseph. It''s located in South Street Seaport, which is always a fun place to visit, and it''s owned by some guys who broke off from Peter Lugers so the food is similar.

My final recommendation is Cafe Grazie near the Met. It''s a good little Italian place to go after spending the afternoon at the museum. It''s very small and cozy inside. The food is really good and prices aren''t exactly cheap, but it''s casual and comfy while still being fine dining.

Have fun on your trip to NYC!

hey have u ever thought of taking the boobie black dress and getting a really cute spaghetti strap or tube top to put underneath it so its not so much cleavage and u can match your shoes/jewelry to whatever color u choose?? I do this with tops I like but my boobs are too much and it always looks cute... maybe like a pretty fuschia or something? Also, dont know if you have any of these.... BUT White House Black Market has some really cute black dresses.. I got one for my graduation and it was really cute... goodluck! :-)

I like the dress with the folded bodice alot. Could you get a little shrug or cardigan for the boob dress to cover the girls up?

Oh, re the not going to the symphony. That comment made me really sad. There is NO REASON you should give up things you love and that are important to you just because your FI doesn''t like the too. Seriously, that''s how people lose themselves and wake up miserable and unfulfilled 10 years down the road. If he doesn''t want to go to the symphony with you, find someone who does, or go alone and enjoy every minute of it. And since you play violin, why dont you get some tickets to the NY Philharmonic? If you''ve never been, it''s quite a treat (again, LBD territory!). That would be a nice way to thank your uncle, assuming he enjoys classical music. Also, try looking online at what''s on at the 92nd Street Y and Carnegie Hall, both have very high end classical music sometimes.

That''s a great idea! I don''t know if he does like classical music though. I''ll shoot him an email about it and ask. I''d buy the tickets myself, but his firm has so many connections, I do believe he gets better seats for free than I can buy! That''s an aweseom idea! Your right about the symphony thing...I do take myself out and treat myself to movies and other such things. He likes my violin and to hear my play...he HATES sitting and doing nothing for hours though. He can''t even watch an entire movie!

Of course, a LBD would be perfection for Le Bernardin, but don''t panic if you can''t find something.. Nice pants and beautiful top will work everywhere here in NY. I agree totally with Surf about proliferation of tourist tees and sweat pants at the theater and restaurants. It makes me crazy, too.

I know a lot about the city because I''ve lived here for well over 20 years.

One thing to remember about Le Bernardin is that you really, really need to like seafood/fish. They are known for only ''lightly cooking'' it and they won''t even entertain the idea of keeping it on the fire a bit longer. It''s Ripert''s way or no way.

If you find yourself in Soho, an absolute must is Lombardi''s Pizza. Cooked in brick ovens from the 1800''s. This is without a doubt the best pizza in the city (of course the best pizza in NY has been the subject of debate for generations!)

Enjoy your trip and tell us all about it! Have fun.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! If you come up with anymore let me know! I''m thinking about going to Elite modeling agency while I''m there (I''m missing Fords open call) and see what they say. I knwo they''ll tell me I''m to short, but hey! I''m going to try anyways!

Eric Ripert!! I love watching him on Top Chef. I would TOTALLY love to dine at Le Bernardin... lucky girl!
