I came across this some time ago and bookmarked a website and then about a week ago came across further info and started looking around. It seems to have roots in ayurvedic and an amazing list of results.

So I thought I would come to the fount of all knowledge - PS of course  - and see if anyone has had any experience with it.

The book with 43 reviews on Amazon

The author's site

Video demonstration http://www.christinas-home-remedies.com/oil-pulling.html on a website run by an MD who is also a homeopath and naturopath.

I'm interested in your thoughts and feedback.

From what I've read (and I've read quite a bit) I highly recommend it. I would use coconut oil-get it at vitacost.com since it's great quality and affordable (54oz is 21.00+shipping and they have a great rewards program).

I did it for a few days but fell off the wagon after probably 3 days. Only because I forget and now I have a newborn.

Has amazing results and coconut oil is awesome for you anyways. The thoughts on it are that most of the bacteria is in your mouth so if you swish it out and kill it you can prevent and reverse a lot of things that are ailing you. I've read a lot of good things about people doing it for a year and curing their arthritis and everything. I say give it a go-can't hurt any!

Thanks for the recommendation but being in OZ I will probably try my local whole foods store. It's good to hear you tried it but I can imagine that a 15-20 min swishing routine is something you have to plan and doesn't easily fit in to a newborn's routine.

If I'm going to try it, I had more or less decided on coconut oil as I quite like coconut and sesame/sunflower oils - the other two most recommended - don't appeal at all. I think what's putting me off is that I typically don't like oily foods and the current penchant for chefs to dribble oil over everything as a "finishing touch" is really off-putting to me.

Yes, some of the background I've been reading says the same - quite astounding really.

I'm actually one of the healthiest people I know because I've learned to talk to and appreciate my body, i.e. I've told it we're simply not interested in colds and flu - they're simply not on our horizon, so I've only had 4 colds in 20 years. Literally. The last one was only 2 months ago which is why I remember so vividly that instead of the 3 days coming, 3 days having, 3 days going...the whole thing lasted from Saturday afternoon until Tuesday afternoon.

Nothing else really wrong except I have had shrinking gums for some years and lost a tooth (last molar) about 2 weeks ago that my periodontist told me I would lose 16 years ago. Bummer. Should have worked harder on it then. However I did make a pact with my body about three weeks beforehand to say "Okay, if you must get rid of it you have to grow a new one because we need a tooth there!" And yes, apparently you can grow new teeth at whatever age but I didn't find that out until very recently. It makes sense to me because we grow bone to knit broken ones and replace our entire skeleton every 7-10 years. So my concentration is very much on my mouth at the moment.

However I'm also very aware that over the last couple of years that since I've been working from home I've been more slack about whole foods i.e. opening a can of soup for lunch rather than making a big pot of yummy home made soup to dip in to.

Hmmm...time to pay attention to the whole foods again and maybe see of my body likes the idea of the oil pulling.

I do it almost daily and use coconut oil as well. I try to live a toxin/chemical free life and thought this might help with cold and flu season as well, so far so good.

Thanks for adding your voice lknvrb4 - it's good to know the plan against colds and flu is working ;))
How long have you been doing it? Have you noticed any changes in your health otherwise?

I have not noticed any real overall changes to my health, to be honest I am pretty healthy. I follow a paleo diet, I run three days a week and have taken all chemical things out of our household so I feel pretty good.

You know what is weird? I read these posts and decided to try it. I'm someone who has a real problem with plaque buildlup, and my gums bleed easily. I've been doing it for the past 3 days, and have noticed results. My gums feel more healthy, and my teeth have that just-clean from the dentist feeling. They look clean and shiny. It is time consuming, so we'll see if I can keep it up, but I am going to try. I've tried it with olive oil and coconut oil.

lknvrb4: You obviously do live a very healthy lifestyle which is paying off. Excellent that you have gone the non-chemical route too. Years ago I switched to Enjo products which are microfibre designed to work with just water and while expensive they are paid for dozens of times over by what you save on cleaning products and each lasts for a couple of years on average.

Way to go PG!!! :appl: :appl: :appl: Good for you  I'm so pleased you're getting (almost) instant feedback on it.
I should be able to pick up some coconut oil this afternoon after another appointment since it's near the whole foods place.

Just in case we have some more "silent but interested" peeps, this comes from oilpulling.org. It's just a survey but a lot of people are reporting these sort of results all over the internet.

I have a big problem with the graphic you posted. There is no cure for diabetes. Oil pulling may have some beneficial effect on your teeth or gums, but none of the rest is substantiated. You might experience a placebo effect with it. I have read up on it myself, in case it might be helpful to me. I found numerous cases where people had absolutely no positive effect whatsoever.

Thank you for responding Lyra. I can understand any disbelief in that graphic, particularly if you have a condition such as diabetes, which is why I said it was simply a survey by a newspaper - i.e take it with a pinch of salt. I'm really not that gullible either since my mother had type 2 diabetes and ended up with a vein transplant operation to try and get blood flow to her right foot and subsequently had 3 operations to amputate toes on both feet after gangrene set in when a cut on her foot didn't heal. This was particularly distressing since she had really looked after her feet with daily massage etc. for years. She eventually died of gangrene poisoning when her body could no longer fight the infection but it was just one of many conditions she developed in the last 5 years of her life and basically, was the one that gained traction. So having said that, please understand that none of the following comments are directed at you - they are simply comments.

However I have also had clients completely recover from fibromyalgia, another condition rated as incurable. They don't "self-manage" either, they're not doing special diets, special exercise, medication etc. (except those for other conditions) except those they want to keep as part of a healthy lifestyle. They simply no longer have fibromyalgia. Here's a video start (not me or anything to do with me) Jodi.

I truly believe our bodies are miraculous beyond our imagining and their basic remit is to heal given the opportunity, so perhaps if anyone finds this as intriguing as I do, put disbelief aside and just try it? Or buy the book - the author doesn't appear to be trying to defraud or hoodwink people - or maybe ask your library?

I have not explored much of this site but found this tooth chart interesting and informative.
