Has anyone spent half the price of their house in jewelry?

Reading the thread on housing over here, this question kept popping up in my head. I actually wonder how many of us actually spent half the value of their current homes on jewelry over their lifetime.

This is a thread about commitment to the cause people!

I have spent a staggering amount of money on jewelry if you total up my entire collection across the years. However, no, I have not spent near 1/2 of the price of my house.


But, that question led me to a fun fantasy: what if I had, in cash, the entire 'on paper value' of my home to spend on jewelry. In other words, a HOUSE-SIZED jewelry budget.

I have spent a staggering amount of money on jewelry if you total up my entire collection across the years. However, no, I have not spent near 1/2 of the price of my house.

Don't have a house yet, but if I stopped spending money on stones and jewelry, maybe I could start saving for a downpayment. Hmm.... nah, won't happen soon

Good lord, no, not even 1% of the value!

Wow, that's a demographic outlier. Even 10K puts you at 1mil for the house at 1%, and many here have spent 10K over their lifetime so it really is rare to find someone who spent so little on shiny little things!

Nobody is asking for specifics - that's why I don't want to know how much. I just thought it would be a fun exercise to run through - I think many people may be surprised at what % they end up with if they count their entire collection.

Nope not even close to half but it is a decent percentage because our house was so cheap (it was a fixer-upper and we renovated pretty much everything). I never want to be "house-poor" and I'm like Kenny on just needing the basics in a house, although I wouldn't turn down a big fancy house as long as someone else offered to clean it

I was just thinking about this last night believe it or not. I have probably about 1/4 of what I originally paid for our house in diamonds, gems, and settings. It can really add up without you thinking much about it.

Ugh, this!!! I would have an amazingggggg collection if I could spend half the value of our home. Housing is ridiculous here! Just a few miles away--closer to the water--a tear-down is $1M!!!! Ouch!

I hadn't ever thought about it - but rough math suggests that I'm sitting at about 10% of my home value. But I've got YEARS to go...
