I just finished my first Lee Child novel- Persuader. I think I hadn''t read him previously because I had him confused with another author, similar name, that is not an "easy" read. I read Persuader because it was a free Kindle download. I was more than pleasantly surprised. I really liked it! And it''s a series character so I can read more! Series character books are like crack to me... once I find one I like I read, read, read until there are no more. I need to hit the library when I get home and pick up some hardcover (i.e. "Free") books from the series.

For those that have read Child, recommendations for the next read?

Woops, late response because I didn''t see this post, but...

Persuader and The Hard Way are the two Lee Child novels that I recommend to people asking about that author. One Shot is also good. The rest of the Jack Reacher novels are also pretty good but not quite as good as those three, except for Nothing to Lose which is pretty bad (and IMO should be skipped. Just pretend like that book doesn''t exist, you won''t miss anything).

I just finished Bad Luck & Trouble and really liked it. I picked up The Hard Way from the library yesterday. When I was at the grocery today, I noticed there''s a new one out. I might download that one to my Kindle.

Thanks for the heads up on Nothing to Lose. I''ll peruse it if I find it at the library, but I''m won''t spend money on it.

Oh, I used to give my husband such a hard time about his fascination with Lee Child -- he and his dad would trade books and it''s like I wouldn''t see him for days. But then I read Without Fail on a single train ride, and I thought it was actually pretty good! I have to be in the mood for it, as I usually like biographies or chick lit, but I definitely won''t be teasing DH anymore for liking them ...

When I first saw the title of this thread, I had no idea who Lee Child was, but having seen the name on Pricescope I was more aware of it. When I saw it again, I paid attention to it. The result is that I found that he wrote in a genre of books that I generally read and enjoy, so I bought One Shot in paperback to give him a try. I hadn''t revisited this thread and didn''t recall that One Shot was among Child''s recommended books, but I loved it and ordered the first four or five Jack Reacher books in the series from Amazon or its vendors (whichever book was cheaper).

In Connecticut our town had a superlative library where one just filled out a card and was called back instantly to pick up a book. In Virginia the whole process is so arduous that I buy books, which is really a terrible waste of money! (I have got to move back to Connecticut!)

I''m reading the newest one right now and love it so far. I really, really like how the stories evolve- while they''re similar in genre to a lot of other books, theres''s something about them that makes them different. Can''t quite put my finger on what it is though.

I hear you on a good library system. We have a great one where I live now and I had a good one in the last city as well. I''ve lived in places with no so great systems and once you''ve had a good one, you''re ruined! Nothing else will do.

I decided to go back to the beginning and am now reading Mr. Child''s first book, Killing Floor, which is excellent. I figured if I could read his books (more or less) in order, I might as well do so. Thank you for bringing up his name. His protagonist, Jack Reacher, is interesting.
