@Matata and @missy I have considered how difficult the job will be for the reasons you listed, my SIL was and still is considering becoming a veterinarian and she told me about the suicide rate and difficulties of the job. Honestly this is my biggest concern but I just can't come up with anything I would rather study than working with animals.
I also think this is why she is trying to get me into her old veterinary practice so I can get actual hands on experience. Either way I'll definitely have to develop a tough skin.
@Jimmianne, can't imagine going to school and being the sole parent all at the same time, that is quite the undertaking and accomplishment!
@StephanieLynn my MIL went back to school when her 3 little boys were still pretty young. My DH is the eldest and he learned to cook and care for his little brothers while my MIL went back to earn her Master of Education and then PhD in Education with a fellowship. My DH was about 9 years old at the time. And it served him (and me haha) very well because he is self sufficient and also quite nurturing. I always say I have a great wife in my dh.
I have no doubt you can do it (ie working with animals) if that is what you decide is your passion.
You should go. You might find other areas that interest you when you attend which could translate to a different career should you change your mind about becoming a vet tech.
I'm definitely going assuming I am accepted @LisaRN and that is a good point that maybe when I get there I will find another area of interest, that or it will further confirm that I need to pursue working with animals in some way. I'm going in with an open mind for sure.
