I''m going through the application process now- hoping that my recommenders get my letters to me on time, and that I can get letters of affiliation, and writing my essays now. Has anyone else gone through the application process? And if you received a grant, where to, and doing what? How was the experience? Thanks!

I did not, but my husband did...before I met him. I cannot throw much light on the application process, but I can tell you one story he told me. He applied in Genoa, Italy, and received one of six Fulbrights granted in Italy that year. When asked at the consulate where he would like to go to school in the United States, he was at a bit of a loss. He did remember seeing a brochure with pretty girls on it from Trinity College in Texas on a table in the the consulate, however, so he requested Trinity College in Texas. The decision was made for him, however, and he landed in graduate school for classics at Harvard instead ;-).

B.E.G, are you wanting to do research or teach? I have done one of each years and years apart and loved the experiences. The application is a PITA, mostly getting it all together is like doing dentistry. Seriously, if you can sit outside office doors to wait for letters, do it to get it done. Incomplete apps just don''t seem to make it. I taught in Taiwan (my favorite place in Asia) and did research in Ghana (the most awesome country in Africa in my unbiased opinion).

Where do you want to go and do?

My aunt is a Fullbright scholar. She loved her experience and it was a huge honor.

Goodluck!

I think I misunderstood the question posed by this thread. It sounds, from Swimmer's response, as if a Fulbright grant is only for research or teaching. My husband, obviously, received a Fulbright scholarship. I'm sorry if I added to any confusion here, but I didn't know the difference!
