Halloween Costumes - Suggestions? What are YOU being?!?

So we''ve been invited to a Halloween party... that needs costumes.

I have avoided these for a long time -- I feel silly going absolutely all out in costumes... I also hate freezing my bum off by wearing something super short or revealing when it''s almost November!!

Any suggestions for simpler/less over-the-top costumes?

What are you being this year?

I don't like costume parties for some reason and I am always invited to them. LOL I have been a painter and thew a paint brush in my overalls; I was a farmer and braided two ponytails and wore overalls w/a plaid shirt. Those were super easy to throw together; here is my farmer outfit and it was nice and warm

Sigh, I''m so annoyed that the exam is the weekend after Halloween!

I''m still going to try and go out though, hehe. I may just take it easy and be a fairy this year.


I personally love funny and nerdy costumes. I don''t know if any of you have seen Big Bang, but Sheldon dresses up as the Doppler effect, I love it! I''ve had classmates dress up in the past as Antibodies and dorky medical things.

It''s pretty simple to dress up as a doctor, just borrow a pair of scrubs from a friend that works in a hospital. Not very revealing either

Although kind of generic.

You could dress up as a Guitar Hero, just put together a fun rock-n-rolly outfit and sling one of the guitar controllers on. If you can talk some of your other friends to do it too, you could be Rock Band

Normally I don''t dress up, but one year I was Sydney Bristoll (the character Jennifer Gardner played on Alias). Wore a blue wig and all black clothes and black boots. Nobody except my kids knew who I was

This year, I''m just wearing a pirate scarf. It''s too hard to come up with ideas when I also have to kids to dress up.

Halloween is my favorite holiday, hands-down. A few years ago, I was Alternate Dorothy (she stays in Oz and takes over): it involved green facepaint, pigtails, ruby slippers, fishnets, and vaguely 30s clothing. Oh, and and little green crown. Did I occasionally need to explain the concept? Yes. Was it better than explaining that I was "Sexy ____?" HELLS YES. I hate this idea that any costume a woman dons has to be sexy, and nothing but sexy - give me clever, any day!

Each year, I try to plan my costume around something I want and wouldn''t normally get - something I''ll definitely find a use for, but that might seem a little too splurge-y unusual otherwise. The Alternate Dorothy year, it was the "ruby slippers" - gorgeous shining red patent leather spike heels. This year, I''m on the lookout for red boots or a crinoline - whichever one I find first will decide whether I''m Nanny Ogg from the Pratchett books, or American McGee''s Alice.

Before you pick your costume, why not think of things you think are fun and cool? And then use the need to dress up as a way to acquire them or exemplify them?

It''s kind of cold, but I had one friend go as a Freudian slip. She just wore a light slip with Fruedian psychology terms written all over it. (MTG, I *love* the Doppler Effect costume. "I''m NOT a zebra!")

I have no idea what I''ll be this year. I haven''t dressed up since my freshman year of high school, but I got roped into hosting a party this year so I''ve got to come up with *something*.

I am not dressing up, but my coworker is going as Pepper Potts from Iron Man. Her BF is of course Iron Man.

Some are kind of revealing, but some are not. They are reasonably priced too so that if you decide you want one of them you can just order it. One that I like is the green M&M.

Starlet - this may be a long-shot, but try some athetic stores such as soccer stores. The one by me (where I got my kids' gear) sells the strangest colors of soccer cleats! I cannot recall if they had yellow, but they did have bright orange. I'm not going to kid you and say they're cool looking. Most looked like futuristic space ships rather than shoes, but possibly you'll luck out and find a pair that fit the style you're trying to achieve. Only down side is most of the bright shoes they carry are over $100 a pair. Most were nearly $200! (You probably could find a pair w/out cleats, of course.)

We host a halloween party every year - people have come up with some good costumes. I''m trying to think of ''warmer'' ones.

One guy dressed in a black swearsuit, and a black knit cap (you know, the ones burglars wear), and he attached random junk mail scattered on his arms, legs, and torso. He was ''blackmail''. Super easy, and warm, too.
Michael Jackson? I''m sure that one will be popular this year.
One girl came as Dangle from Reno 911... funny.

You could be an 80''s chick... that''s pretty easy, and cheap, too. You could get the outfit at a thrift store.

I agree with Circe, the more creative costumes are funner!
A few years ago I was a christmas tree. I bought a bunch of battery operated LED lights. I fashioned a tree out of sparkly green material, and used plastic pipe to make like a hoop skirt, and scattered the lights around. I made boxes for each foot, and wrapped them in christmas paper and bows. And I had a star on a headband.

I probably won''t be doing Halloween this year, as we''re moving this month. We''re definitely not hosting a party, but my brother might. I''ll be head-deep in unpacking and situating my new house, so *if* I dress up, it''ll have to be super easy and cheap.

Oh, I remember another one. A girl I know dressed up as a gold digger for Halloween - jeans, a gold shirt, a pretend hard hat spray painted gold and a little plastic shovel spray painted gold.

One year my best friend and I dressed up as the double mint twin girls haha we handed out gum to everyone, it was great and we didnt have to dress sexy either! i have no idea what im gonna be this year but fi and his best friend are gonna be starsky and hutch *rolls eyes* lol

id still really like to be rainbow brite one year but they only have the sexy costume for that :-\ hmmm

LOL. I''m with you on that ckrickett -- the more ridiculous, the better.

Sexy hooker would be fine and dandy for most people, except that I''ll be wearing this costume to my kids'' CATHOLIC SCHOOL halloween party and would probably be struck down by the hand of God in front of all those little kids.

Sigh. Ah heck, I guess I''ll just be a bumble bee. A very ASEXUAL bumble bee.
