Sadly yes... and then regretted it! I've learned you should just get what you want, regardless of the price (within reason, of course) and don't skimp if it isn't what you really want. If a few hundred dollars more would get you the better quality item, it is usually worth it. (or a few thousand--- I don't know what other peoples budgets are, but mine is usually in the hundreds only.)
I have ONE TIME, and thankfully it worked out ok in the end. It was a cruddy diamond from a random online vendor, but I wore it for a couple of years and then resold it. Because I purchased in the States and sold in Australia, with the currency exchange fluctuations, and even with my VERY CLEAR disclosure of the cruddiness of the diamond, I ended up accidentally profiting about $200 on it.
I would allow an item's "bargain status" to help sway me one direction or another if I were already considering the product, but I would never buy something simply because it was discounted to a certain degree, or because theoretically it would be possible to make a buck on it. My finances are finite and I prefer for them to be tied up in things that bring me enjoyment now, versus things that may perhaps pay off in the long run.
I had to think about this...but nope! Everything I own, I do love! I own shockingly little for a PSer who's been around (if you factor in lurking) for a decade.
I don't think I have. I've bought things that didn't end up working on me - or that I don't wear as much as I'd hoped I would ... but a jewelry purchase based on "bargain" only-appeal? So far - nope.
Hahaha. Yes. Of course I have. I'm not the type to hunt for a bargain, but if I'm out and about and happen to see one? Every nerve ending in my body screams "buy it" and sometimes I cave...
I bought a pendant, a 1.10ct oval in a bezel, hanging from a little 10 point rb diamond in a bezel. It was a local B&M store closing down sale. I took the oval pendant part off and had the stone set into a gorgeous rose gold solitaire. I wear the little bezel rb and chain as a necklace with more casual outfits.
Recently, I was given a pale pink mystery stone by my aunt, which belonged to my grandmother. So, that's going in the rose gold solitaire, and the oval bargain basement diamond is going to become a three stone with some oval rubies I have here. I've been taking a metal smithing class, so I'm up for doing all sorts of stuff like this with settings. Varying results...
It's the only thing I ever bought solely because it was cheap, and I've worn the heck out of it ever since. I got lucky, and will never try that again!
Seriously, though, I think Jen got it in one (as usual ). If you look at the stuff like it's full of possibilities and purchase it with an eye towards possible rehabilitation, it opens the door to a lot of possibilities. That said, I wouldn't do it with something I couldn't either use as a present or rehab - I can't, for example, set teeny stones, and I don't know anybody's ring sizes ... so no cheap eternities unless they are for ME.
