Had a visitor this morning!

sonnyjane - do you work in wildlife rescue?

Oh, actually I work for the bird show at a zoo :)

I would consider that visit as a cool and amazing gift. I've always been fascinated by birds of prey. Since childhood I've talked about taking up falconry.

Maybe that can be my retired old lady hobby! Can you imagine..."What's Grandma doing today?" "She's busy training her raptor again."

Sonnyjane you have my dream job! Lucky you :appl:

Wondering if it's injured since it let you get so close. Has it left?

We went to a bird educational thing at a park in June and they were talking about how barn owls are running out of places to live with less barns around these days. Very cool to see one up close like that.

What a wonderful and unusual treat!!

We thought the same thing, but eventually it flew off.

wow- that is so cool!! Owls are fascinating! Last year we had a tiny screech owl (only about 7 inches tall) that was sitting on the landing of our outdoor stairs-just watching us! Didn't seem scared at all. They are quite common in our neighborhood although that's the only one I've actually seen at our house. Our neighbors across the street put up an "owl box". They almost immediately got a little screech owl inhabitant. It will disappear for days or sometimes even a week or so-but eventually returns. Beautiful!

Ohhh he's lovely! Owls are so cool!

Aww, how adorable! :)) We live out in the countryside but all I ever see are deer, rabbits, stray cats, an occasional snake in the road, and various other small animals. I have seen a raccoon up close but unfortunately no owls. :blackeye:

Yes, he's a barn owl -- and probably young, too green to realize he isn't gonna make friends of cats! I read a book about barn owls. They are just fascinating. Mate for life, and if the mate dies, often the surviving owl sits on a branch, turns his head to the trunk, and dies, apparently of grief. They're extremely intelligent -- and as you can see with this little fellow, curious.

Wild horses too! Yow, what a fabulous place to live!!!

As romantic as that notion sounds, it is unfortunately just a myth. While they will choose the same mate year after year so long as they both show up, they will just pick another mate if something happens to the first. Wouldn't make much sense evolutionarily speaking to be a suicidal species lol. They are also one of the dumbest birds out there. Owls have some of the smallest brains in the bird world because they need to have HUGE eyes to see so well. All that space in their head taken up by eyeball means teeeeeny tiny brains. We always joke that they are "just as smart as they have to be".
