This little (big) guy was sitting just outside my screen door this morning. Gave me quite a shock. It was having a staring contest with one of my cats...I think they wanted to eat each other. It was there a pretty long time...until the other cat saw it and started howling at it.

"wwwwhhhhhooooooooo" won??

But seriously - that is pretty cool for an owl to be that close to your home!

WOW! What a gorgeous owl!

Did he have post for you? :cheeky:

There's an owl that hoots somewhere around our backyard every night, but he's never shown his face. I'd love to see him! (Or her, or them. We don't really know how many there are, but the hooting is very cool. Drives my cats nuts!)

Based on the size of its talons, I'm pretty sure the owl would have won. I was surprised it stayed put while we were taking pictures. It must have really wanted cat for breakfast. Definitely a cool (and shocking) thing to see!

Hi,

Thats so wonderful to see. Thanks for posting.

Annette

WOW! that is amazing! what a gorgeous bird!

Very cool! I sometimes see barn owls flying in my neighborhood, but I've never had a chance to see one up close and personal like that - lucky you!

That is really cool. My dad's dog is terrified of owls and they have some in the back yard. If one hoots, she hightails it back to the house.

My mom is convinced it is some sort of sign.

It's very pretty! It's pretty amazing that it let you get so close to it.

You probably don't want to go there... :? ;))

Ha, I've already googled. Good thing I don't believe in that sort of thing. Especially since I am having a baby any day (supposed to be induced today but the hospital was full).

WHOA SO COOL!!! What a gorgeous owl friend! Do you live in a rural area?

I want an owl to visit me and my cats, but I don't think they like city living! :(sad

I live in a residential area that is on the edge of town. We also have wild horses that come down from the hills. They like to eat the landscaping in our neighborhood.

Wow, that's really cool, Amc!

What a beautiful bird...

That's a barn owl? I know very little about birds, except for my cockatiel Princess Zee (Ziggy).

Birds are all about comfort and trust.

See the visit as a gift of trust.

And curiosity by the look of it

Hopefully a very important parcel. He's not quite a stork but will do.

Yes, he's a barn owl -- and probably young, too green to realize he isn't gonna make friends of cats! I read a book about barn owls. They are just fascinating. Mate for life, and if the mate dies, often the surviving owl sits on a branch, turns his head to the trunk, and dies, apparently of grief. They're extremely intelligent -- and as you can see with this little fellow, curious.

Wild horses too! Yow, what a fabulous place to live!!!

Thanks for the info!
And yes, a fabulous place. Not sure Reno has ever been called that before :)

Hey, my uncle used to live there! Visited him but sure never saw horses coming out of the hills. Guess he lived on the wrong side of the..uh..grass!

Oh my gosh, how cool is that! He's beautiful! Once in a while I'll hear an owl (some woods behind my house) but I've never seen one - how great to see one up close - Thanks for sharing with us!

He is gorgeous! How cool.

Wow! That's not the average visitor! He's gorgeous though! ::)

Wow amc, how beautiful he/she is! Thank you so much for sharing the pics! And Laurie, thank you for the info- so romantic, so heartbreaking about how they die from grief when their mate dies.

Both kitty and owl just stared at each other? And owl is probably an owlet? (is that what you call young owls?)
Cool!

Thanks for sharing :)

Wow that's amazing!!! It would scare the crap out of me initially...they're so unusual looking!!

Yep! I think kitty was too scared to move.

Such an awesome looking bird. I used to fly 3 of them at work - Edward, Alice, and Rosalie lol. Can you guess what movie had just come out when they were hatched?
