Holy smokes! Any east coasters out there? Just saw this on CNN... Those sharks are HUGE! It looks like a scene out of Jaws!

Linky?? I have lots of family in Nantucket... These stories always scare the heck out of me.

I know, My cousins were Extras in that film. I loved seeing them in it, but that film did me in. I couldn't swim in th ocean for a long time after that...

My niece and nephews are learning how to surf.. This the long weekend before they have to go home and go back to school. Their dad is an expert surfer. Hubby is there, he's got more meat to him so am worried, MR. Jaws will see him and say DINNER!!!

Tell them to stay out of the water!!!!!

There was a program on the Discovery channel (??) that said sharks are finding there way into fresh water and have been seen in the Miss River, the Great Lakes, and a few other places that sharks shouldn''t be. Now I won''t go in the river...

Bull sharks can tolerate fresh water and have been known to swim up rivers. Jaws is based on the 1916 Matawan Creek, New Jersey attacks, which they think was done by a bull shark. Never caught it, so they don''t know for sure, far as I know.

Jaws is my all time favorite movie-but it causes me to not even be able to swim in a pool by myself-let alone a river or the ocean!

Ditto- I live in the Detroit area, and I have often been out on the Detroit River/ Lake Erie area... I have swam there, but EVERY time I think about that Matawan Creek attack, and how at any moment I could be pulled to my death and eaten by a huge freakin shark!

Yikes! I think I''d hear the theme music in my head the whole time!

We swam when we went to the Bahama''s several years ago, and the things I''ve seen on the shark shows I watch all the time kept rolling around in my mind. Kinda hard to have fun when you''re worried about what''s underneath you.

I'm a NY'er and vacation in LI. Sharks are pretty normal out at the end of LI off the coast a little.
Such amazing creatures. My FSIL is a Marine Biologist and speaks about sharks circling her during her research dives all the time. She's actually more afraid of barracuda than she is of sharks and says that the sharks are mainly curious and are afraid of her O2 bubbles. Her fiance (also a Marine Biologist) was almost speard in the chest by a Blue Marlin so I guess all sea creatures are dangerous in their own rite. As long as their respected I'm sure it's all good.

Wow, the Great Lakes? How do they even get there? I thought they were saltwater creatures. Shows how much I get about animals.

Bull sharks have been known to survive in fresh water for up to three years (that they know of)... Sharks come up the Hudson river, through the tributaries and whatnot, and could eventually end up in Lake Erie. I don''t know of any sharks being found IN the great lakes, but they have found one or two sharks in the Hudson river.

There are GW sightings off the Cape and Martha''s Vineyard every year. This year is different because they''ve seen a number of sharks in the area all within a few days of each other. The weather has been so wonky this summer that it wouldn''t surprise me if these animals were confused.
