Golfers!

I''m looking to buy my husband a new set of irons for our anniversary. I''ve been reading reviews but I''m still pretty clueless. He''s an okay golfer, not great and not terrible and he''s always looking to improve his game. Leaving price out of the equation for now, what set of irons would you get?

Golf clubs are tough--I don''t think that your husband needs to be custom fitted, i.e. his swingweight tested, etc., but even for a mid-grade type of club, you want to make sure they''re going to fit. My husband is over six feet tall, so his clubs need to be a tiny big longer. I, on the other hand, am short with long arms, so my clubs need to be shorter.

I would probably recommend something like the Ping G5 for a mid-grade set of irons. My husband has an older version of the Pings (i3s) and he likes them. The G5s have gotten good reviews and they seem like a good fit for the non-beginner who isn''t ready for a forged set.

This is all advice from a mediocre golfer, though, so take it with a grain of salt!

I would suggest getting him a fitting as the present, with a IOU for clubs.

However, if you really want to surprise him, you want to go with a set that has bounce. Not wedges.

I would suggest Ping's or Callaways. They are great for golfers that are trying to hone their game. I got my FI a set of Ping G10's last summer and they are great for him. On a great day he shoots in the 90's, but he's coming down from the low 100's. What does your husband average?

Gosh, this is a challenge. I would never buy my DH clubs--they are very individual (my DH has had them all

. I suggest buying him a GC from the place he would normslly buy clubs--and after trying out different types, let him get what best suits his swing.

I think for a guy picking out golf clubs is alot like picking out jewelry for us. I would never buy my husband clubs unless he had chosen them himself. I like Sharon''s idea of a gift certificate to some kind of golf shop.

He''s not a new golfer; growing up the golf course was at the end of his street and he was there everyday. Now, he golfs much less. I think he''s usually in the 90s, on a great day mid to high 80s, on a terrible day, over 100.

I''d never buy him clubs from a place where he couldn''t return or exchange them, but I''d at least like to make an effort.

Reading the 2009 iron sets reviews on golf.com, the Ping rapture v2 sounds nice although at that price they''d also be his birthday gift.

Reading the 2009 iron sets reviews on golf.com, the Ping rapture v2 sounds nice although at that price they'd also be his birthday gift.

Do you know what he has now? If they have a thin head or a thick one?

Yikes, he's right there in the middle. If he's a good golfer and looking to really improve, then I would go with some Mizzuno edges, but if he's just recreational then I would go with Pings.

ETA: Also, at the price you are looking at, be sure to see if they are graphite shafts (more expensive) or steel shafts. This is something you would want to work into a conversation to find out.

It all depends on how hard he swings, and he would have to tell you what he prefers.

I''m almost certain they''re Calloways but which particular model, I couldn''t say. Pretty sure they''re graphite shafts though.

He''s definitely a more recreational golfer though.
