I like using antique brooches as hair pins. I have very long hair and I will use a small elastic band to tie back a section and pin the brooch in above the elastic band. The brooch rests on the elastic band and usually covers it up. I thought I had a picture of the brooch saved (I think it''s on my home computer) I will try and remember to post it tonight. This brooch I picked up from www.faycullen.com . They have 6 pages of brooches and pins : ) They also have a really lousy return policy, but plenty of great photos and measurements so you know what you are buying. If you have shorter hair, there may be a way to use the brooch pin to connect it to a barrette with wire, you would have to experiment as that may cause the brooch to sit at an odd angle.
This vintage platinum old mine-cut diamond pin weighs 5.4g and measures 1.6" long, 17mm wide and 5mm deep. Centrally bezel-set .06ct old mine-cut diamond graded F color and SI2 clarity surrounded by rose-cut diamonds laced fully throughout the pierced-openwork gallery in distinctively openwork patterns with simplicity and expression. Fine mille-graining throughout the platinum gallery enhances the ornate shimmer of this pin.
I just saw some very attractive hair ornaments on Ebay. For some reason, they were listed under clasps. They had some really interesting pieces from China and elsewhere and the prices seemed fair. You might want to try looking there.
