If I'm SICK, I don't come in to work.... but I do go to school. I don't get "sick days" at work. Any time I miss has to be made up. Class lectures can't really be made up though and I've had instructors over the last few quarters who make attendance a percentage of my final grade and randomly take attendance for points. I'm planning to transfer into a very competitive program so those few points could make a difference.

The guys I work for will come in no matter what they have. One sat here a few weeks ago and let me know as I was heading out for the day that he thought he had strep thoat!
Of course I wound up bringing it home (not strep thankfully, but a pretty miserable flu) and had to suffer through class sick. Wound up missing over a week of work


I used to work at a deli and it was GROSS to watch what people would come in with and then spend the day handling other people's food . We weren't "discouraged" from staying home, but we were hourly with no sick time.

I just thought I'd check in and let y'all know that I'm taking a mental health day today. Last week just about gave me a nervous breakdown and I had horrible panic all night last night. The response from my boss: "ok. Can you run your reports from home?". Thank god for that!!! It's soooo appreciated!

I just thought I'd check in and let y'all know that I'm taking a mental health day today. Last week just about gave me a nervous breakdown and I had horrible panic all night last night. The response from my boss: "ok. Can you run your reports from home?". Thank god for that!!! It's soooo appreciated!

Thank you. I'll be okay. I lost my dog a couple weeks ago, and I have a tremendous work load. I'm just not handling the stress well, and I was feeling that buried alive/drowning in life feeling. A day home to catch up is huge.

It depends entirely for me. Sick time is also different in the UK than in the US.

If I'm a bit unwell, I usually go in, but it depends on what I'm doing that day. I work with the homeless population and if I can't be at my desk doing paperwork and have to spend it with clients I won't go in. If my immune system is already a bit beat being exposed to anything and everything will just make it worse. Work doesn't mind if we're off sick a few days a year and most years I end up with between 3-5 sick days.

If we're really sick, I don't find work to be that understanding. I had a hell of a time with an ear infection a couple of years ago and was throwing up everywhere and couldn't stand up straight. I was off for a couple days, back for a week, off for a couple - pattern continued and I took a total of 15.5 days off. I'd attended the GP several times, and was referred to the hospital but in the wait for the appointment I got better and the hospital couldn't find anything since I wasn't ill by the time it came around. I ended up with a written 1st stage warning on my file and was told not to take anymore days off that year. So I attended very sick a couple of months later and very nearly missed throwing up on my boss. The warning was still in affect and work considered me a "success" that year because after a telling off and a warning I didn't take any further days off. It might work if you're taking the piss, but instead I just went to work sick to avoid getting in trouble and potentially got several other people ill.

My rule of thumb is that a fever, diarrhea, or vomiting means staying home. Unless I know that I'm contagious I generally try to tough it out. A cold wouldn't bother me but if I know that someone has been having gastro issues I don't want them anywhere near me or my family! We are big hand-washers in my house, especially after being in the public.

A cold wouldn't bother me but if I know that someone has been having gastro issues I don't want them anywhere near me or my family! We are big hand-washers in my house, especially after being in the public.

If I'm not feeling well, I do not go to class or clinical. I especially cannot to clinical if I'm sick because I'm constantly around people who's own immune system is in the gutter and I would then risk them having complications as a result of me being around them. No thanks! I do understand that there are situations where a mom or dad must go to work no matter what the circumstance is just to be able to make it through the week/have food on the table etc. So, I try not to judge. I do know there is a girl in class that is ALWAYS blowing her nose in tissues and coughing and it irks me every single time. I try to just tell myself its allergies.
