For those who need help picking a mattress

I have seen threads here asking about the best mattresses to get. Yet buying a mattress is more difficult than buying a car or a diamond (believe it or not for me anyway). DH and I are taking our current mattresss and bringing it up to our getaway home and therefore are in need of a new queen mattress. In my research I found these 2 sites which have greatly helped me in my search. Now DH and I only need to test them out to see which is the one.

These 2 sites have helped us narrow our choices. Because we despise being hot while we sleep, DH and I are opting for an inner spring mattress. Definitely, no pillowtop as these are the first to sag. The mattress is for a platform bed so I am not too concerned about the mattress being ulta firm. We will be looking a pocket coils to see if they really do reduce movement as I wake up each time DH gets up or moves around too much.

I have seen that many mattresses now say non-flippbale? Do any of you have a non-flippable, but flip anyway? I would think flipping a mattress is the best way to even the wear and tear of a mattress. Well, off to find stores and take the "sleep test".

After sleeping on my Tempur-Pedic, I am ruined for all other mattresses. It's like a dream, heavenly!!

Ours is a latex foam mattress (different from Temper Pedic or memory foam). I've never been SO happy in my life! Used to have back pain every day; it has almost disappeared since we got this critter. My dog loves it too, must feel good on his ruptured disc. Oh, and DH, he's there too.

The only drawback to these mattresses is that they are incredibly heavy -- changing sheets is hard enough; it's easier to flip the house than this mattress.

We have a Tempurpedic too and just love it. Ours has a pillowtop as well so flipping is not needed or recommended. Goes against everything I've ever known about mattresses but it is true in this case. Good thing too - this thing is so heavy that I agree with other poster that it would be easier to flip the house than the mattress.

My last inner spring mattress was flipped religiously but it still developed a sag in the middle. I can't stand that!!

We just bit the bullet on a Comforpedic set. It's a little different from Temperpedic because it has some % of latex and a slightly different type of memory foam. They *say* it doesn't get as hot as Temperpedics can sometimes be ... (I have no experience about that). We tried Temperpedic, Comforpedic and Sleep Number beds -- were just drawn to the feel of Comforpedic. It was a tiny bit less than Temperpedic but still pretty pricey. Been I'd guess about a month now. So far so good. I think DH loves it more than I do -- because I was very used to a fluffy pillow top mattress ... that's the feel I've always loved ... and this is a bit of a "feel" adjustment. Once your body heat melts into the thing its very comfortable though.

Our dirty little secret is that we bought an adjustable base w/massage functions. Let the Geriatric Jokes fly, suckers! I've fallen and I can't get up .... into BLISS.

I have stayed with friends who have the memory foam and the latex matresses (latex was last weekend) and I had the worst sleep ever. Even though they love it, DH and I like it cool so definitely no foam or latex for us.

I understand a lot of places give a comfort warranty - sleep on it for 30 days and if you don't llike it you can return and get a different mattress. I read that it takes at least 3 weeks to see if you love the mattress or not after sleeping on it.

When we have had people stay over they have always commented on how comfortable our futon is. Our futon mattress is a spring mattress.

I would also think that if you don't/can't flip your mattress that it will wear down more quickly. From what I have read it states that you should flip even if it says not to. However, what makes a mattress unflippable? Weight/size?

A lot of mattresses these days have a "pillow top" only on one side of the mattress. If you flip it, there's no comfy stuff on the other side. Now you can rotate it top to bottom ... but no flipping it OVER.

There were some dreamy pillowtop "W Hotel" beds I tried out ... maybe you would like those!

Our first mattress was a pillowtop and we vowed never again. We only kept that one for about 5 or 6 years. This one we have had for about 15 years? (it has held up very very well).

I guess the best way to see what you like is to try it out. Someone told me that you should lie down on one for at least 15 minutes to try it out. Maybe I will "power nap" on one.

They make them to use only on one side so you'll have to buy another one sooner. What a rip off!

We love our new mattress more than any we have ever had! It is latex, and latex is not hot. Some mattresses have a little layer of latex but they really aren't latex core. Ours came from The Original Mattress Factory and they carry a softer version and a more firm version. The soft one was too soft for my husband, but I love the one we got as it is supportive but not hard. Plus, Original Mattress makes theirs two-sided so you can flip them. So basically, you can get double the life out of the mattress. Downside is that they do not have locations nationwide, but I'd travel to find one before we need our next mattress if I had to!!! The other thing I love about Original Mattress is that they are straightforward about pricing. It is listed on the site and prices are the same in all their stores.

We have McRoskey's Classic mattress and box spring set, in king size, gentle comfort. Although it is pricey, I highly recommend it! It's hand-made of cotton. During sleep, it doesn't get hot, and I cannot feel DH's movement at all. The mattress is two-sided, and only measures 8.5 inches thick, so it is very easy to flip, change sheets, etc. Also, the box spring's thickness can be customized to anywhere between 8-14 inches.

I have read a lot of good things about the Original Mattress Company, but sadly there is no store near me. They have stores in western PA at least a good 5 - 6 hr drive from me. I checked this out yesterday.
