We had fish centerpieces for our 8th grade banquet wayyyyy back in the day. They were betas (i think) in a pretty vase and sitting on top of a mirror. They were kind of cute and I think could be done very tastefully for a wedding depending on the design and style of the wedding.

Just a thought... it's be awfully strange and gross to glance at a centerpiece and notice a floating dead fish.

What do you do with the fish afterwards?

I wouldn''t do that unless you can find good homes for them afterwards. Two betas cannot be in a fishbowl together so they will need to be kept separately. I don''t know, maybe you could give a manual with the fish if someone wants to take one home?

My sisters ex-SIL (loooong story) had her wedding at the Melbourne Aquarium and had live fish in her centrepieces. Looked great at the start of the night, looked drunk or dead at the end of the night. So many people were pouring alcohol and food into the bowls lots of the little fishies died. And no, there were no kids at this event! This was the adults!!!!!!! WTH!!!!!!!!!!

we had fish centrepieces at our university ball. Unfortunately, we''d also booked an act called ''Mr Regurgitator'' who proceeded to, you guessed it, swallow and regurgitate most of the fishes. I don''t think many fish recovered from the trauma and they mainly ended up in the flowerbeds at the end of the night.

So, note to self, never never have fish centrepieces (with gross entertainment acts)

I had considered having centerpieces with fish at my engagement party and what honey22 descibes is exactly what I envisioned happening. I would really feel bad if the fish died, so I decided against it.

Sounds familiar. Teenage guys decided to do this at my prom in high school with the fish in our centerpieces. Guys can be so cruel and gross!

I mean ew, ew, ew who is that impressing?!

Sorry, just a side note. Anyway, blondebunny it''s doable I am sure, but I would be concerned about the other things people expressed here.

I had some friends use fish, but as part of their cake decoration. I thought it was cute. They were all blue to match the blue wedding.

It''s hard to see, but there are 4 on the base of the cake, too.

Thanks for the replies everyone.... My FF never really EVER says anything he wants... so im sure this idea is not going away... I had asked him what are we gonna do with them, and his reply " they will probably die anyways, goldfish usually only live for a day"

gahh... but my parents just did get a fish tank, so they would probably take them, but I was think maybe ill only incorporate them into some of the centerpieces so I dont have 10 centerpieces of FISH... lol.. what makes it worse is he is DEADLY allergic to seafood, so I think everyone would be like WTF... but I dont think any of our friends would put anything into the bowls, they are all animals lovers, and Id be sure to tell them not too..

We had them at one of my sorority formals in college. They were nice but, I don''t know, I just don''t think its a great idea at a wedding. Don''t get me wrong, I love fish, we have an 85gallon fish tank but I don''t have to look at the fish when we eat. Why do I say that, because, you never know when a fish is going to poo.

Whose Wedding Is It Anyways
I''ve never heard of fish on the tables before. Interesting.

BTW, what show IS THIS??? I''ve never heard of this show. What channel?

Just an FYI, this could turn out to be viewed as a very politically INCORRECT thing to do.

A lot of people do not consider living things (yes, even fish) as "decor". I know I''ve read several flaming threads about this on other forums.

blondebunny, please consider not doing this...

for all the reasons already mentioned...

First of all, my BF and I are fish dorks, as we have two large tropical aquariums. For many reasons stated in this thread, I would highly advise against having fish as your centerpieces. I think several prior posts have described good reasons as to why to avoid doing this. However, I do not see anything wrong with maybe incorporating a betta bowl into the centerpiece in the head table (assuming you are having one). After the reception, you can transfer the betta into a special aquarium all for him and you will have a living memory of your wedding reception! Below is a link to a great aquarium (only 6 US gallons) that will keep your betta healthy and happy (they do not do well in those bowls for long periods of time). I advise against goldfish, they need more work than most people expect (need lots of room and filtration). In fact, if you buy this aquarium, you can take your time finding the right betta for your reception well in advance. He will be ok in the bowl during your reception, but, you would have to make sure not to forget him afterward!

These are around $45-$50, but you get a quiet and low maintenance aquarium and is perfect for 1 betta. Just add gravel and a nice plant and you are done. Other aquarium kits out there are loud and not so good quality.

I really don''t think you would be able to control not only all of your friends but your friends'' dates. It would only take one mistreatment of a fish for me to start crying and after hearing accounts from others about what happened to their fish, I plead you to reconsider

Could you just have one bowl on your place card table or something?

Thanks for the replies...

I could never see any of our friends mistreating the fish...ever... they arent like that at all...

Ill just pretend to forget about the FISH idea (wasnt mine to begin with...not at all...) and hopefully FF wll forget.. and Ill make sure no more watching WWIIA.....

OH and DreamGirl... its on the style network!!! i love that show!! they have had a few with Tiffany themes... :-)

Me too, and here on PS as well in past threads.

Bunny, if your friends are "animal lovers" as you say, then I'd bet there'll be at LEAST one in the bunch to be totally taken aback (and probably offended) by this.

What do you do with the fish afterwards?
Normally, they get flushed
38.gif

Best case scenario: the bride and groom think people will take the fish home as pets. Some still get flushed.

How about clear glass fishbowls with fish-shaped soaps? or candies? That could be fun! A Pop Art inspired twist!

blondebunny, even if your friends would never do something like endanger the fish, you still have to worry about staff at the venue, accidents (if you drop a vase of flowers, oops. if you drop a fish in the middle of wedding craziness...well, not good), what to do with them later, etc. it''s also complicated. betas can''t go with other betas...they even try to fight with their own reflections (LITERALLY), and like someone else pointed out, they''re not tiny fishbowl fish--they like their space. it''s also a really good point that, if your friends are animal lovers, they may have a problem with the idea, too. besides...weddings are complicated enough without having to feed your centerpieces!!! let your FI have his way on something else should it come up, but i''d pass on this one.

I posted a question like this way back then and decided against it after mulling the responses. I''m not politically correct, so I really don''t care too much about what Internet people think about me - but I DO care if I upset any of my guests. I really doubt anyone would have thought much about it, but I also don''t want to be responsible for the souls of all those fish.
