Hi All!

My fiance and I are trying to figure out what song to dance to for our first dance. I know it seems weird to some that we don''t have a definitive "song" that is "ours," but we have such diverse taste in music (he''s a professional breakdancer and I was a ballerina for 18 years) that we are having a hard time. Soooo, we decided that we want something acoustic so one of our friends can play the guitar and another can do the vocals.

Any suggestions? Oh, I might have to add the the fiance is NOT a fan of country (and I grew up on a farm listening to it--do you sense the musical issues here?)....

I would say this would depend alot on the vocal range and talent of your friends. Something sweet and kind of standard (like Frank Sinatra-ish) would probably bridge the musical gap nicely (but then I''m a huge Frank Sinatra fan! I can''t imagine anyone really disliking it!)

There are a million lists out there if you need ideas. Just one I found http://www.firstdance.com/fd_song_full.htm but there are bunches if you just Goggle "first dance"!!

Good luck!!!

OH! Some tips I read somewhere might help too....

Make sure it''s not too long (You don''t want to be dancing in a spotlight for seven minutes!)
Make sure it''s something you can dance to! (ie, not too many tempo changes, etc.)
Make sure it''s the kind of song you want video-ed as your first dance (ie, nothing you would be embarrassed for your grandmother or grandchild to see!)

Another suggestion site, but this one tells you what dance goes with it! http://www.dancingtogether.com/songs.htm

What about You've Got A Friend by James Taylor? It's folky but not country and it's a great acoustic song with really sweet lyrics:

When you're down and troubled
And you need a helping hand
And nothing, whoa nothing is going right.
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest nights.

You just call out my name,
And you know where ever I am
I'll come running, oh yeah baby
To see you again.
Winter, spring, summer, or fall,
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there, yeah, yeah, yeah.
You've got a friend.

If the sky above you
Should turn dark and full of clouds
And that old north wind should begin to blow
Keep your head together and call my name out loud
And soon I will be knocking upon your door.
You just call out my name and you know where ever I am
I'll come running to see you again.
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you got to do is call
And I'll be there, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Hey, ain't it good to know that you've got a friend?
People can be so cold.
They'll hurt you and desert you.
Well they'll take your soul if you let them.
Oh yeah, but don't you let them.

You just call out my name and you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again.
Oh babe, don't you know that,
Winter spring summer or fall,
Hey now, all you've got to do is call.
Lord, I'll be there, yes I will.
You've got a friend.
You've got a friend.
Ain't it good to know you've got a friend.
Ain't it good to know you've got a friend.
You've got a friend.

Another idea--The Book of Love by the Magnetic Fields (or Peter Gabriel--he did a cover of it). It's a bit non-traditional, but another very sweet acoustic song. Lyrics:

The book of love is long and boring
No one can lift the damn thing
It's full of charts and facts and figures
and instructions for dancing

But I, I love it when you read to me
And you, you can read me anything

The book of love has music in it
In fact that's where music comes from
Some of it is just transcendental
Some of it is just really dumb

But I, I love it when you sing to me
And you, you can sing me anything

The book of love is long and boring
And written very long ago
It's full of flowers and heart-shaped boxes
And things we're all too young to know

But I, I love it when you give me things
And you, you ought to give me wedding rings
And I, I love it when you give me things
And you, you ought to give me wedding rings
And I, I love it when you give me things
And you, you ought to give me wedding rings

beatles in my life

There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends
I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I''ve loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
there is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I''ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I''ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more

Though I know I''ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I''ll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more

I''d try googling "first dance, guitar" or something like that and see what comes up. I''m a huge Van Morrison fan, and our first dance was to "Someone Like You." We don''t have a song either -- I think that''s actually pretty common.

Michael Buble...........Everything

You''re a falling star, You''re the get away car.
You''re the line in the sand when I go too far.
You''re the swimming pool, on an August day.
And you''re the perfect thing to say.

And you play it coy, but it''s kinda cute.
Ah, When you smile at me you know exactly what you do.
Baby don''t pretend, that you don''t know it''s true.
Cause you can see it when I look at you.

[Chorus:]
And in this crazy life, and through these crazy times
It''s you, it''s you, You make me sing.
You''re every line, you''re every word, you''re everything.

You''re a carousel, you''re a wishing well,
And you light me up, when you ring my bell.
You''re a mystery, you''re from outer space,
You''re every minute of my everyday.

And I can''t believe, uh that I''m your man,
And I get to kiss you baby just because I can.
Whatever comes our way, ah we''ll see it through,
And you know that''s what our love can do.

[Chorus:]
And in this crazy life, and through these crazy times
It''s you, it''s you, You make me sing
You''re every line, you''re every word, you''re everything.

So, La, La, La, La, La, La, La
So, La, La, La, La, La, La, La

[Chorus:]
And in this crazy life, and through these crazy times
It''s you, it''s you, You make me sing.
You''re every line, you''re every word, you''re everything.
You''re every song, and I sing along.
''Cause you''re my everything.
Yeah, yeah

So, La, La, La, La, La, La, La
So, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La

Thank you all for your suggestions! I''m off to iTunes to check them out.

Oh, and about the vocal range question--our friend is the lead singer for a band out of Canada called Blessed By A Broken Heart. Sort of an 80''s style dance/metal/punk/hair band.... At any rate, he was a vocal student for a while and has an amazing voice that can handle most anything--if that impacts your suggestions at all.

I love all the selections suggested. But if none of them feel right, can you post more about the two of you... like how long you''ve been together, were you friends before you dated, love at first sight... etc. Ya know, something that might help us help you a little more.

But... the main reason I posted is because we did NOT have a first dance song for the longest time. It''s actually more common than you''d think. So don''t worry about that being weird. I''ve seen quite a few posts on bridal boards asking for help with this. I asked for suggestions and nothing clicked until one night... "At Last" by Etta James (not exactly original, but it really is perfect for us) just hit me over the head!

I knew a woman who, probably about 2 months before her wedding, had only come up with one idea: to have him holding up a boombox playing Peter Gabriel''s "In Your Eyes" (of course, she had the problem that he couldn''t dance and wasn''t willing to learn).

For those of you significantly younger than me: It''s a scene from the movie Say Anything. Yes, I know, that was 20 years ago.

Not sure what she actually ended up doing, but I''m sure you can come up with something special, meaningful, and beautiful!!!

when i think of acoustic and guitar, I think of MORE THAN WORDS by Extreme.

it''s a beautiful song, but not sure if the lyrics are appropriate.

Crazy Love by Van Morrison

Everything to Me by Ben Harper (a little more upbeat...maybe too much so)

Come Away with Me or Turn Me On by Norah Jones

Yay! I loooove At Last! I actually plan on walking down the aisle to that song! It''s so beautiful!

The song that we''re thinking of for our first dance is "We Are Man and Wife" by Michelle Featherstone. I think it''s perfect and beautiful and could be played on piano (or probably guitar) and sung. Haha I''m listening to it right now just to make sure all the lyrics are correct and it gets me crying every time.

"Man and Wife" by Michelle Featherstone

All the things you are to me
Darling you have set me free
I''ll always give you what you need
And what you deserve
All the joy and all this love
I know that it is from above
And now together there''s enough
To fill this world

''Cause you are the love of my life
You are the love of my life
And now we''re man and wife

All the things that you will do
You know I''m standing next to you
And darling I will see you through
The rest of our lives
With you beside me
I have won
I''m glad I''ve waited for so long
There is no doubt
That you are the one for me

You are the love of my life
You are the love of my life

There will be times
(We''ll make the time)
There will be things
(That we will bring)
Everything is going to be fine
Now you''re in my life

So I give you heart and soul
It''s yours to take wherever you go
And through the years
You''ll always know
It''s yours to keep
God has blessed this sacred vow
And angles high above look down
And see the two of us have found
The perfect love

You are the love of my life
You are the love of my life
You are the love of my life
Yeah
You are the love of my life

Now we''re man and wife
We''re man and wife
Now we''re man and wife
We''re man and wife
We''re man and wife

We had a pianist who did vocals as well and he played Bryan Adam''s ''Heaven'' for our first dance.
