Holland American is an import grocer here in Southern California that has been in continuous operation since the 1943.
I drive there to buy cheese and real licorice for real men.
While in no way an licorice expert, I can recommend a first purchase or two if you want.
Oh and speaking of licorice, I know where to buy REAL abisinthe too.
I like this one, though it is in no way a blow-your-head-off licorice selection.
I think a passionate American licorice lover will really appreciate it.
They are soft coin-shaped discs.
As if I wasn''t already excited to go to Holland on Friday, there''s a thread about my favourite candy?
I knew I loved PS for a reason...
Yssie, when I have a craving I tend to go to World Market. It''s *definitely* not the best source, and I''m sure kenny''s steering you in the right direction, but it''s quick and easy for me. (I was so mad when the German Market near me closed down - that''s where I got my licorice fix.)
I like the black jelly beans best - I don''t like american black licorice strings much - it''s okay (better than the red stuff)... I had some licorice in Ireland/England and I didn''t like that a whole lot - well, I liked some of it. Some types have like a really strong molasses flavor that I did not care for at all.
A few years ago I got a box of licorice altoids and I LOVE THEM and cannot find another box... I still have a couple and eat them so rarely to make them last lol
Trader Joe''s has an awesome sweet black licorice. It''s called Australia''s Darrell Lea and it comes in a plastic box of big soft chunks of licorice deliciousness! I''m a huge black licorice fan!! I agree that the real stuff in Holland is much different than what we find here and there are so many varieties in flavor there. But this stuff is darn good for a quick fix!
Kenny's got it right -- if you want black licorice, go to Holland! Of course true Dutch people (I was born there) also like their licorice salted, double-salted, and triple salted, so you have to be careful with your selection. Here's my idea of a connoisseur's selection of sweet (zoet) black licorice:
