In theory I would go with the tree, BUT I live in an apartment and would have nowhere to plant it. Plus, if it was a faraway wedding its be hard to transport...

If you really want to offer favors, I agree that food is definitely the way to go. At times I''ve gotten caught up in the cuteness of little boxed trinkets, but then I realize how many of those I''ve received at other weddings and didn''t know what to do with. I always felt bad just tossing them, but then I just don''t have a need for things like a plastic shell filled with sand.
I also agree w/ all the above comments that while candy apple sounds yummy, it can be a bit cumbersome to deal with. Chocolate would be less expensive, easier to consume, and just as appreciated.

I think the best analogy I've come up with for wedding favors is airline food/snacks. It's never really all that great, but for whatever reason people miss it when it's not offered.
