So some of you have seen me, so you know my hair is like...damn bright orange copper red. Well I touched it up this weekend so it would be fresh for our family portraits today. The photographer was showing us some of the images so we could see how well or not well my 11 month old nephew was cooperating in the images since we couldn't see him as we were all paying attention to the camera. My hair is like...holy crap on fire in these pics. I just told the photographer that if she needs to "tone it down" that it's ok. My sister and brother are both blonde, and my hair naturally is reddish brown, but I make it like..special. And I know it's bright but this was...wow!

But the shots were great. We went to the botanical garden here in St. Louis, got some shots with leaves, and in the Japanese Garden and in a gazebo thing, and they looked great. My nephew held it together well despite having leaves as a serious distraction and wanting to snuggle up on my dad and sleep instead.

Ame, I would love to see the color of your hair in the photos if you can it...I have been toying with the idea of changing up my hair color (dh against it) because I am sort of bored with my brown locks and red is right up there on my list of possibilities.

Love the idea of taking pics at the botanical gardens- bet they came out great!

That is SO mean to start a thread about family photos, without even providing one picture! You tease, hair and all! :wink2:

Yes, I second (third?) the request to get a peak at your gorgeous flaming red hair! I'm intrigued... please share!!!

lol! Not the best photos to show how insane it looked yesterday but here's a "professional head shot" one of my wedding photog friends got at a friends wedding last year (my eyes look like..abnormally big and gray and crazy in this, my husband pointed that out when he saw it and I see what he means now...). Yesterday it was even brighter and you could see my highlights better. I am hoping to see proofs tomorrow though so maybe I can post one of those.

Note the totally professional purse strap and ratty tank top. That church was an absolute sweat box and it was like 30 degrees out that day.

The other is one I snapped in my (filthy)bathroom Saturday night to show my sister what speck case I had on my phone so I could bring her that one or one of my several others since she wanted to borrow one in a different color (my nephew is bored of the hot pink apparently). I was looking fabulous. lol

Ame, you are so pretty and you look so Irish!

Aw thanks!!! German/Irish :) Temper and all.

I am usually the only red head in pretty much any picture, so I always feel like my hair is the center of the show lol I kind of like it too!

Ame, I love love love your hair and color! It's gorgeous and really is perfect with your skin tone/color! Beautiful!!! :appl:
Thanks so much for adding the photos!

Hi,

I love the color of your hair. You were born to it. You are so pretty. Your face doesn't express what your words sometimes do.

So innocent.

Nice photo.
Annette

Wow. Your hair color is amazing.

Ame, I love your hair color, your eyebrow color, your eye color, your whole coloring. And you have a great smile, too. You are so pretty!

:appl: LOVE your hair colour!!! You can really pull that look off - its TOTALLY *you*!!! I love the pics!! Thanks for sharing!

Sometimes it's cool, and it is usually the big conversation starter. In these pictures it will be until you see that adorable snuggle bug in the middle! He will steal the attention from the hair!

DH has naturally red/strawberry and my niece and nephew had reddish hair when they were little though now both are just blond. DH still has a LOT of really really red in his beard but the rest is all gray. Boo. He won't let me dye it. I keep wanting to when he's sleeping haha

Aww, man!!  Thank you! It is worth the work and time investment. Though when more grays start coming in..we shall see.

As for your latter sentiment... :naughty: I do get that a lot. That whole "innocent" looking. People are often surprised at what comes out of my mouth vs how I look. I also think it's FASCINATING how people think they have my politics and stuff pegged when they look at me. And then they're totally, TOTALLY wrong.

Thanks!!! Man. This thread was SO not intended to be a compliment grab, I was just so mortified that it was like...ridiculous in a family picture, especially bec to me it isn't as bright as it must really be... but I got quite a confidence booster out of the compliments!

As for your delightful gushing, thanks!! I do dye my brows to match though I doctor that mix so it's less bozo (that has been trial and error). ;) I fill the arches in with a marker for redheads (like a brow marker) though in the first few days, and as time in the "cycle" goes, I switch to a pencil, then a powder that are duller and less red and more taupey so it's not as hilarious looking.

Ditto!

You are cute as a button!!! And that red is GORGEOUS!!! You do such an amazing job with the brows and head of hair that it looks like you were born with that color! I'm

Ohhh I love your haircolor! (and your skin too, wow) I'm constantly trying to put red in my hair-drives my husband nuts, but I love shades of red. Tho..once I bought a box of color that said if you have blonde hair, which I do, it would dye it strawberry blonde, and it showed a pic of the most perfect color..so I got it and took it home and mom helped me. And I was looking in the mirror wondering why my head looked black..and mom said "oh it's fine honey, it will rinse out, it's just wet that's why it looks dark" and I'm leaning over the sink looking at the insane red being rinsed out of my hair and the whole time my mom is all chipper and hidey ho.."it will lighten once it's dry". I had to work at 5am the next morning so I went to bed..and got up to crazy clown orange/red hair. Nice. No time to fix it so I pulled it into a pony tail and off I went. I worked in the laundry of a packing house that my dad worked at..he got off work, came in, took one look at me, and walked out. Then pretty soon there's people after people coming in to look--my dad had gone in and got on the INTERCOM and announced that my hair was all crazy. A beautician friend advised to wash w/Dawn dish soap over and over, and that faded it to a beautiful auburn color that I wish would've stayed.

Sorry for the thread jack, that's just a funny story I like to tell.

You have such stunning colouring!! There aren't many people who could pull off hair and eyes like yours but it looks *perfectly* at home on you!!

And that's a really sweet photo ::)

Funny story *NOW*, but probably at the time, you'd wished the earth would have swallowed you up whole!!
Boy, that Dawn dishwashing liquid is like the most multipurpose solution out there!

Ame, you are so pretty! I love your hair color! Your eyes really pop in that first photo. I always wanted to try red. Is it difficult to maintain?

Thank you! People are often shocked when I say it's not natural. DH said "you need to stop telling people it's fake and just say 'thank you'"

OMG. I recall one particular HS incident where it wasn't bright enough and I used Koolaid packets to make it even crazier. I loved it. My parents were less enthusiastic. Dawn is very helpful for dye booboos though.

Aww thank you!!!

I don't want anyone thinking it's not a lot of work:
It is very difficult to maintain. And frankly, pretty expensive. It's where I would say the majority of my personal grooming expenses go. I do my roots every other weekend, like clockwork. I have a recipe that involves three specific shades, and a stockpile of all of it, and if my silvers get more pronounced a backup plan for coloring around that as well. If things get discontinued I will have to work on a solution at that time then as well. I get highlights usually every 4 months on the top half of my head, with a few underneath just randomly. That just brightens it all back up if it gets too dark. Sometimes I feel it's too solid. Everyone around me thinks I am nuts. But the biggest factor is the color depositing conditioner. I rarely put dye through the ends of the hair, only in the root and brow. The ends are just usually touched up twice a week with the color depositing conditioner (as is half my bathroom!) It's a labor of love usually. I recall one night I was halfway done putting it in, like I had half my head done, and the tornado sirens went off. I decided I was going to be found in a ditch looking good.

That sounds like a phenomenal amount of work! But obviously it's paid off - your hair looks amazing, and your picture reminds me a bit of Tori Amos in her earlier days.

So pretty, ame! Your hair is fab, but what I noticed first was how natural and *happy* you look!

I am incredibly stiff and awkward in photos. Seriously, point a camera at me and I instantly make strange face and do something weird with my hand.

Wow, Ame, you have that down to a science! :appl:

So self-deprecating, yet SO FABULOUS. ;))

You are such a beauty! And a cutie! Thanks for posting a pic!

Fantastic!

May I give a little advice? Not on hair colour - you are a master! - but on the photo. Even if the photographer does tone your hair down, ask for a copy with the original colour. In many, many years, that is the version you will want to show your grandchildren so they will see all the weird, strange stuff we did "back in the days", not the sanitized version.

Gorgeous and I love the red!!!

The botanical gardens are beautiful. I can't wait to see how the pictures turned out - bright, beautiful hair and all.

Ame, first of all, you are a GORGEOUS girl!!! Second...Your hair is INSANELY beautiful and the color suits you perfectly...And this is coming from a person who NEVER liked red hair... I guess this is because so many ladies in my country are dying their hair red when their complexion color and eye color don't really match this haircolor, so the final result looks, well...bad. But you are a natural redhead and your hair color suits you perfectly...and it makes you shine like a star :appl: :appl: :appl:
